SU Win Over Nova Makes Case for Tune Up Scrimmages Before College Football Season (sujuiceonline.com; Bierman)
Item: We’ve railed about it in this column for years, the NFL does it, so does MLB, the NBA and NHL, and Jim Boeheim’s program each November, they play tune-up games before embarking on the one’s that count, something needed in college football.
The scheduling discrepancies across the FBS college football landscape are the one element that at times makes it hard to determine why one team should be ranked higher than another, and is likely to be the cause of much irritation of the Power 5 conference champion(s) that doesn’t make this season’s initial College Football Playoff semi-final on New Year’s Day.
Sure, TV (money) plays the biggest role as to when, and sometimes where, a team will play, including the ACC’s deal with ESPN for a Labor Day evening conference matchup telecast which is Miami-Louisville Monday evening and was Florida State-Pittsburgh last year, quite a jolting ACC welcome for the Panthers.

The first impression of Louisville's revamped and repackaged football program, however, provided a look at something oh-so-familiar: A feisty, unrelenting defense.
For all of the talk of Bobby Petrino's offensive wizardry and Will Gardner's acclimation to the quarterback job Teddy Bridgewater vacated after last season, the Cardinals' ACC debut was a smashing success because their defense drubbed Miami in a 31-13 victory before sellout crowd.
Miami ran 56 plays. It was dropped for a loss seven times and threw 12 incompletions. A third of the time, the Hurricanes went nowhere. That's a good place to start in any game.

How to Move Ivy League Football Towards Relevancy (thedp.com; Tydings)
Most long-standing sports institutions are resistant to change. Whether it is Major League Baseball refusing to address time of game issues or the NCAA resisting even the most painfully logical changes to its outdated system, change is continually feared by the sports establishment.
And while there have been some strong changes to the Ivy League over time — including concussion protocol — there are still some tweaks that need to be made to the Ancient Eight.
No, this is not about adding a postseason tournament for Ivy basketball. This is about making necessary changes to Ivy League football.
You may have noticed that college football started around the country this weekend. There was Johnny Manziel’s replacement throwing for 511 yards in his first start against an SEC defense. There was a pesky upset try from Navy that fell short against national powerhouse Ohio State.
Heck, even locally, FCS (formerly I-AA) darling Villanova took on Syracuse and nearly beat the ACC program, losing in double overtime after missing a 25-yard field goal at the end of regulation.
