Class of 2015 New Commit: Sam Romano (TX) Mid

Cool, I wondered if there was a relation there, too many commonalities for them not too be related. Phil Romano started Fuddruckers and Romano's Macaroni Grill. He was also part of the group that bought Hoffman Sausage Co a year or two ago. I hope Sam has a great experience at SU, Fuddruckers Indoor Practive Facility has a great ring to it.

His HS coach is an alum, too. Pat Kennedy.

Still have 7 goalies in practice, 3 of which were highly recruited and one other is the starter. How do players get better with that quantity?

If Hutchings from Marcellus (haven't seen anywhere but this board, not saying it isn't fact), he is a 2014.

Yes, 2015s are a long way off and not locks to be studs. That said, the schools we will compete with (UNC, UMD, UVA, Hopkins, etc) have already filled their 2015 classes and are picking off 2016s. It is the way lacrosse recruiting is done today, like it or not.

Why is SU so far behind in the recruiting game? What's the deal?

In 2014, I've heard a lot of good things about Ford, Schwasnick, and Voight. Zazzara is in that traditional former football player, midfielder role that we like. Most recently exemplified by Ianzito.

2014 is coming along nicely, with the depth of the 2013 class there was no way the 2014 class was going to have as much starpower. What year is Syrus Nash, is he 2013? 2015 is a bit behind but thats normally how it is for SU, we have never gotten into the very early recruiting game like JHU, UVA, UNC, and others.

and honestly I like it that way... Yes, we will miss on a Stanwick, Rabil, etc., the best of the best perhaps, but we find diamonds in the rough and also target those big athletes like Mullins that can turn into future stars. A kid like Megill was not a top ten recruit, but was a fantastic leader and 4 year player...

I agree but Syracuse has also started to get a little more agressive then they normally do. Dylan Maltz is a good example, UVA and JHU were circling despite the fact he is a legacy and his brother is/was at SU, and SU got him to commit as a sophmore. One of the reasons that SU hasnt been there dominant self the past few years offensively is that the recruiting dropped as some of those late guys/diamonds in the rough didnt pan out. Its no surprise SU went hard after the Evans class early and often, the writing was on the wall.

High school lacrosse is beginning to heat up in the Lone Star State. Texas has a heap of athletes and many sharp coaches who are contributing to the growth of knowledge here. Below are the top five programs as I see it as well as more top prospects in the state.

Top 5 (4/10/14)

1) Episcopal School of Dallas (12-1) – The Eagles have the most potent offense in Texas. Midfielders Sam Romano ('15 – Syracuse) and super-frosh Nakeie Montgomery initiate the offense up top, while Richie Loftus ('14 – Dartmouth) uses his excellent vision to feed off the double to Jack "Shooter" Beare ('14 – Notre Dame). Flying under the radar, the ESD defense quietly lets up just 5.7 goals per game, with sophomore Charlie Sikes saving the ball at a 61% clip ... not too shabby for a team with a 14.7 goals per game average.

Desko is starting to push deeper into the younger classes. They got a commitment from Quinn from Niskayuna (2017) a few months back. I asked his coach why he hasn't had more of his kids play at SU and he said SU just hasnt' been that agressive with the younger kids so the kids get antsy end up signing with other top teams. Nisky has kids going to Duke, UNC and Virginia among others. Waiting a bit and getting late bloomers has its merits.

27. Sam Romano, M, Episcopal Dallas (Tex.)
Affiliation: Iron Horse
Commitment: Syracuse

Pumping in 42 goals and 30 assists for the state champions, Romano took his game to another level, creating great scoring chances for himself and his teammates. A savvy decision-maker, he’s a hard worker who runs like a gazelle and gets to the cage despite all sorts of schemes plotted up to hinder him. With one more year remaining, Romano has could very well become the best offensive prospect to ever come out of the Southwest.
