2 on none break

Why give it up when he had a guaranteed deuce? I had no problem with it. It wasnt like johnson was 5-10 feet ahead of him

tactically, game on the line, absolutely the right decision. Just would have liked to see the young man so value the assist, that he would give up his own dunk.

It's hard for me to disagree with that and I was slightly surprised he didn't at the time. On the previous possession he traveled, so even though BJ created the steal and was dead even with him with no one between them and the basket, I think he may have wanted to make up for the previous play in a hurry. I can't say this with any degree of certainty, but it certainly is as plausible as much of the conjecture I have read on here. His facial expression after the dunk may offer a clue.

To throw a little more fuel on the fire, the likelihood of him bricking the dunk may not be that much different than somehow turning over the ball trying to make a fundamental pass that some of us could have made as 8th graders.

I'm not judging the kid's actions on the play, but if he is that bad of a passer that some worry he would have messed up that pass, then I am very worried about this season. As much as a love KJ being more aggressive than Tyler, I think you make a valid point and am glad I wasnt the only one surprised not to see something that reminded me more of Sherman passing to Stevie(not in degree of spectacularity, just in spirit).

It wasn't a problem on that play, but it will be interesting to see if it is at times in the future. I wish the NSA would use their powers for good and tap Boeheim's thoughts for moments like that.

there was a defender kinda between them but i also was surprised he didn't dish there.

Only SU fans...
If you're implying that I'm a negative Nellie, I'm not. Nothing against the young man. By all accounts, Kaleb is transitioning from a scoring guard to a point guard. Let's watch him develop together.
2 years from now, in the same situation, he would recognize that BJ was a mess and a bunny dunk might be great tonic to settle him down. Coach on the floor stuff.

I'm completely with you on this one. Would have been more meaningful to his teammates to give that one to BJ.

The inept abilities of this team offensively make me think that we need to just throw down the deuce and get back to playing strong D. We arent exactly lighting up the scoreboard.

That was one of those plays where if you hesitated to pass it might have been too late so I have no problem with it. Also I'm not sure who needed the dunk more to get going BJ or Kaleb, likely both. Certainly a more experienced PG has a handle on that situation more quickly and sets Johnson (the guy who made the steal) up for a the throw down. At this point in Kaleb's development I'm just glad we wound up with an uncontested dunk.

Kaleb has been unselfish to a fault so far this year, from what I have seen. I want him looking for his shot more, every time down the court actually. His teammates will need him to create that threat to open space, or this entire offense is screwed. Go ahead and dunk it young man. Feed the fire.

Compared to most of our jumpers I'd prefer Kaleb taking his pull up from 15-17' range. He could take that 7 times a game as far as I'm concerned.

I think this is a bit of over analyzing. Sherman Douglas threw it in himself from time to time. I'm not really concerned with his mentality. He hasn't appeared to be selfish in the least.

Absolutely. The perimeter defenders always overplay Cooney in the corner, while Rak is posting up on that strong side. If KJ doesn't feed Rak, he needs to get into that elbow area to cause damage with his jumper, a drive to the basket or kick out to an open shooter. In NYC, he was too content to stay around the arc and play catch, which didn't work at all. He needs to get into the teeth of the D and realize he will be the best option every 2 or 3 possessions. I know he can do it, and I think it is the key to the season really.

I'm fine with it. BJ certainly shouldn't be upset that he didn't receive the pass (and I doubt he was).

In my mind, giving up the ball in that situation is not indicative of having a PG mentality or not. Nice gesture to his teammates? Sure. Necessary to show that he's thinking 'pass first'? Not in my opinion. I'm more interested in him giving up the ball when he's in the lane or has an open jumper but dishes for an open layup. I don't worry much about the cheapy stuff that pads stats (breakaway dunks or assists).

Kaleb was ahead of BJ on the break, I have no problem with him taking the layup. It was a game, not Midnight Madness... Now if it was Midnight Madness, he should of shovel passed between his legs back to BJ or thrown it off the backboard for the alley op...

I think you always give the ball up to the bigger player when it is uncontested, for the bring the house down dunk. But I don't have a problem with it.

Once he gains a little more experience, I'm guessing that Kaleb would be inclined to give that ball up every time [he doesn't seem to have any qualms about passing the ball], and value the assist more than the deuce.

Maybe if he'd played PG his whole life, he'd have passed it up. Or if he'd had more opportunities to throw it down thus far this season. I bet in another two months if this were to happen again, he feeds the big man.

Exactly my thought. Passing the ball between two players is not a strength of this team right now.

Exactly. You always reward the big men for getting down the floor. But it wasn't an obvious selfish play because kaleb was ahead as you mentioned.

Edit - stupid auto correct.

Not to over-analyze this, but after watching a replay earlier today, it looked like BJ was at least even with him at one point but pulled up. Maybe it's on BJ for doing so, or maybe he recognized KJ wasn't going to give it up and/or wanted him to take it. At this point I'm not worried about either scenario, as long as it doesn't become a pattern, especially if a closing defender may have a chance. I just wish reporters occasionally had the gumption to ask some of the more interesting questions we see on here rather than the same run of the mill stuff a robot could ask.

as noted i wasn't alarmed or upset that joseph took it home. but remember at the time saying "thought he was gonna dish"
