SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 19/22 Syracuse University women's basketball team takes on two nationally-ranked opponents at the Florida Sunshine Classic in Orlando, Fla. this upcoming weekend. Syracuse takes on No. 9/9 Baylor on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Warden Arena on the campus of Rollins College. On Sunday afternoon, the Orange closes the event against No. 18/21 Michigan State at 4 p.m.

In its latest game, Syracuse defeated in-state foe Canisius, 70-37. The Orange recorded 67 rebounds on the night, one shy of the program record. Five different players recorded at least five rebounds against the Golden Griffins.

No. 9/9 Baylor and No. 18/21 Michigan State mark the second and third nationally-ranked teams that Syracuse will face during the 2014-15 season. The Orange played No. 1/2 South Carolina earlier in the year at the Junkanoo Jam, suffering a 67-63 setback.

Peterson Performs
In her first season as a full-time starter, sophomore guard Alexis Peterson has thrived. She currently leads the squad in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game. In addition, she ranks first on the club with seven games scoring in double-figures. Peterson ranks 18th in the ACC in points per game.

Peterson has proven to be a strong presence on both ends of the court. She leads the ACC in assists, averaging 5.0 helpers per contest and ranks 47th in the country. The sophomore guard also records 2.33 steals per game, which ranks fifth in the conference. She owns a 2.05 assist turnover ratio, the seventh-best mark in the league and ranks 71st in the nation.

At the Junkanoo Jam, Peterson put on a show en route to All-Junkanoo Jam Team accolades. Against East Carolina on Nov. 27, she matched her career-high with 19 points on the day. She came right back with a great showing against No. 1/2 South Carolina on the very next day. In a personal-best 40 minutes, she dished out nine assists and pulled down six rebounds, both of which were career-highs, in a last-minute loss to the Gamecocks.

In her second start of her collegiate career, sophomore guard Alexis Peterson had a career-day in the season-opening victory against Fordham on Nov. 16. Peterson led the team with a personal-best 19 points against the Rams. She made a career-best eight field goals on the day, as well.

Against The Best
With two nationally-ranked teams on the slate this weekend, Syracuse will play a nationally-ranked opponent for the second and third time this year. The Orange faces No. 9/9 Baylor on Friday night and then plays No. 18/21 Michigan State to close the Florida Sunshine Classic on Sunday afternoon.

In its last game against a ranked opponent, Syracuse took No. 1/2 South Carolina to the wire at the Junkanoo Jam earlier this year. The Orange led with two minutes remaining against the top-ranked Gamecocks, but ultimately suffered a 67-63 setback.

Under head coach Quentin Hillsman, Syracuse owns a 10-44 mark (.185) against top-25 competition. The team's latest win against a top-25 team came on Jan. 30, 2014 against No. 6/6 North Carolina. The Orange recorded a 78-73 victory on the road in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Series Breakdown
Friday night marks the second time Syracuse and Baylor will meet all-time. The two teams first met on Dec. 21, 2010 with the Lady Bears coming out on top, 77-43. Baylor was led by First Team All-American Brittney Griner, who currently stars on the Phoenix Mercury.

Team is right there.

Can't seem to finish at the end. Up 72-70 with two minutes or so left to go and don't score again.

Still, it's basically a young team. Just need to learn how to close out a game.

Cheers,
Neil

Butler’s off night proves too much for Henderson, Peterson to overcome in SU’s 74-72 loss to No. 9 Baylor

WINTER PARK, Fla. — After making just two of her first 11 shots, Brianna Butler made her way to the Syracuse bench and head coach Quentin Hillsman followed her.
As Butler subbed out for the second time in the game’s first 11 minutes, Hillsman gave his small forward an earful, yelling inches from her face. When Butler finally sat, Hillsman crouched down and continued to shout at Butler as the game continued.
Within moments, Butler was in tears.
“That was personal. A private moment between me and her,” Hillsman said. “I didn’t get on her at all.”
Despite a bad shooting performance from its go-to player, No. 19 Syracuse (8-2) went down to the wire with No. 9 Baylor (9-1) on Friday inside Warden Arena in the opening game of the Florida Sunshine Classic in Winter Park, Florida. Syracuse held a marginal lead late in the second half until Bears guard Niya Johnson hit a jumper with 1:02 to go, the last points in a 74-72 Baylor victory.
After losing 67-63 to No. 1 South Carolina on Nov. 28, Friday’s game marked another close loss for Syracuse against a national powerhouse.
“I thought that for about 36 minutes, we were the better team,” Hillsman said. “For four minutes when it was time to win the game, Baylor came out and won.”
It was an all-around poor night for Butler, who shot 6-of-24 from the field — 2-of-15 in the first half and 4-of-16 from 3 overall — yet finished with 16 points. Syracuse’s second-leading scorer also missed two 3s in the final minute and a half of regulation.
“At any point in the game when I shoot the ball, I shoot with confidence and feel as if everything’s going in,” Butler said. “Whether it be in the beginning of the game or the end of the game, I shoot the ball the same way. They just didn’t fall today.”
Over an hour before the game, Hillsman pulled aside senior guard Diamond Henderson and told her she needed to have a strong performance. She responded, combining with point guard Alexis Peterson to keep the Orange in striking distance despite Butler’s struggles. Henderson finished with 27 points, and Peterson added 16 points and five assists.
The Orange held a 29-26 lead at halftime, but the lead changed hands six times before Henderson fed Peterson for a game-tying basket with 7:44 left. And with SU trailing 58-57 moments later, the senior made two free throws to put the Orange ahead.
“Whether (Butler) is making shots or missing shots, we’re all going to play our role,” Henderson said. “Tonight I saw some opportunities to attack, and that’s what I did. Some of them went in.”
Then Butler, in response to her poor first half, hit a 3 with 6:25 to go to give the Orange a 62-58 lead.
“In the second half I was able to slow down, catch myself, and be able to just shoot without thinking too much,” Butler said.
Peterson and Henderson continued to carry SU down the stretch. Henderson found forward Briana Day inside for a layup to put SU up, 68-64 and Peterson then hit two free throws to give SU a 70-66 lead.
But even as timely scoring gave Syracuse hope, Butler couldn’t find any rhythm. The junior’s missed 3s in the waning moments — the first with the score tied at 72, the second with the Orange trailing by two — prevented the Orange from recapturing a lead it held tenuously late in the second half.
And even while struggling, Hillsman designed a play for Butler on the game’s final possession. He called timeout with 17 seconds left on the clock and the Orange down, 74-72.
Butler didn’t have a shot, though, and instead passed to Peterson, who tried a layup from the left side that hung on the rim but rolled off, and the Orange’s effort to overcome Butler’s poor night fell with it.
“We got exactly what we wanted. We got the ball into (Butler’s) hands,” Hillsman said. “ … I just keep waiting, and I keep saying it, because it happened last year around this time. We kept having this conversation, and she ended up shooting like 65 percent for the rest of the season from beyond the arc.
“It’s coming. It’s coming.”

Winter Park, Fla. – A late run from No. 9 Baylor erased a four-point lead from No. 19/22 Syracuse in the final three minutes to defeat the Orange 74-72 in the opening game of the Florida Sunshine Classic on Friday night.

Senior guard Diamond Henderson scored a season-high 27 points in the game on 5-of-7 shooting from behind the arc, while Alexis Peterson and Brianna Butler chipped in 16 points each.

Syracuse moved to 8-2 on the year with the loss, with both losses coming to top-10 opponents by a combined six points. Baylor improved to 9-1.

The Lady Bears used a 9-0 run early in the first half to take a nine-point lead that Syracuse spent the rest of the half chipping away at. Diamond Henderson's 13 first half points were what allowed 'Cuse to take a 29-26 lead at the break.

Henderson went on an 8-0 run by herself to complete the comeback and take Syracuse's largest lead of the period at five with under a minute to play. She hit two 3-pointers in the stretch as part of a perfect 3-for-3 half from long range.

Peterson also chipped in double figures in the first half, scoring 10.

Scoring picked up in the second half, with Syracuse shooting 44-percent from the floor in the period and the contest would stay close the entire way, with neither team leading by more than five the rest of the way.

Syracuse took three separate four-point leads in the final six minutes but the Lady Bears wouldn't let it get further than that.

Briana Day scored on back-to-back possessions as part of her 10 points in the game to give 'Cuse a 68-64 lead with just over three minutes to play.

After a jumper by Khadijiah Cave cut the game back to one possession, Peterson sunk a pair of free throws to keep the Orange cushion at four.

Back-to-back buckets from Sune Agbuke and Nina Davis, who finished with 26 points, erased the Orange lead and tied things up at 70, but another Day basket put the Orange back on top with 2:10 to play.

Agbuke answered on the ensuing possession and both teams managed to get stops on the defensive end until Niya Johnson hit the eventual game winner with 1:02 to play from just inside of the 3-point arc.

The Orange managed two more possessions with chances to tie, but Peterson's attempt in the final seconds just rolled off the rim and 'Cuse couldn't control the rebound in time.

Peterson's 16 points marked the eighth time in 10 games she hit double figures. Briana Day finished with 13 rebounds to make a double-double for her, which was her sixth on the season.

The Orange will next play No. 18/21 Michigan State on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the final game of the Florida Sunshine Classic.
