I was thinking that. But mainly I was just thinking 1) I wanted to make the joke about swimming, and 2) the last 44 passed it on to the newest 44.

I'd be perfectly cool with Floyd being the one to bestow 44 on Robert.
Yeah, I thought the joke was pretty good.

At the end of the day, if this winds up being the stumbling block...the impasse...the thing that keeps us from getting such a highly coveted player (he's got the most scholarship offers of any RB in the nation, as if I need to remind anyone) is a jersey number...

Ugh. Look, 44 is of monumental importance in Syracuse history. But at the end of the day...it's a jersey number. It should not be the thing that stands between Syracuse and Robert Washington. The number represents a storied legacy. A legacy that has been passed from RB to RB over the years, until it was so foolishly retired. I've been one of the people behind the #Restore44 movement in general, but holy crap, I cannot stress enough how dumb it's going to be for us if this is the reason we don't wind up with this young man.

It's a legacy, Syracuse, yes. But it's also a jersey number. He's not asking if he can drink his Powerade out of the Holy Grail at every home game.

Not sure what the worry is. That he won't live up to the legacy of Mandel Robinson? For goodness sakes, give. RW. the.damn.jersey

First off Robert is a Junior this puts restrictions on contact by the coaching staff under the rules of recruiting by the NCAA. The only face to face allowed would require the family to make another visit to Syracuse. The coaches can not visit with them off campus.
Even phone calls are restricted as only one call is allowed to be made between April 15th and May 31st during a high school football player's junior year.

You can DM a 2016 player as of Sept 1st of last year. I hear what you saying but it's LEGAL ways coaches get in contact with players after Sept 1st. You know DM the prospect to show interest and guve your phone number which will trigger the player to call that coach LEGALLY. Now ask me if anyone in Robert's family has Syracuse HC cell number? NO! Ok I can tell you they have every HC number on his list of interest except Syracuse. I'm not trying to cause a frenzy here I just wanted to point out somethings

I cannot stress enough how preposterous this whole thing regarding 44 is turning out to be. It's looking more and more likely that 44 will be brought out of retirement. That's great. But now they're going to make him EARN it?

Again...that has never. Happened. Before. This is not a part of the tradition of 44. The tradition has always been to give it to an incoming recruit you think is worthy. After 15 years of being, at the very best, mediocre, and including a stretch of some of the worst seasons in program history...we're going to change up that tradition and make one of the best RB prospects in the nation EARN it? Why? What the hell are we trying to prove? Isn't the point to get the best talent in the door that you can? Why the hell would you make things more difficult for yourselves, if you're the staff? You've got an elite national talent ready to commit if you offer him 44! Don't make him "earn it"...you didn't make Mandel Robinson or Glenn Moore "earn it"...you sure as hell didn't wait around to see if Ernie Davis or Floyd Little could "earn it."

For God's sake. Do what's best for the program. Land a top level talent - who is friends with a lot of other top level talents - even if it means that you have to, shockingly, NOT be stubborn about this.

I would much rather see the jersey numbers of the individuals who wore 44 in the rafters then retire the entire number. The whole retire 44 thing always felt like a poor attempt to drum up interest and get ticket sales. retiring the number is dumb and makes zero sense. there is more honor and legacy by letting 44 be worn by a deserved RB. Showing the progression of great players from decade to decade means more then abruptly stopping it.

Love it. Need to dispatch a team to find that cup. Then we can check the availability of this guy at signing day, and get him mic' up:

Robert Washington, you have chosen... wisely.

Amen

Because they visited some of those schools multiple times. SU only once.

The number of visits to the school is not of importance on this subject. Robert has never visited UCLA but has spoken with Jim Mora 10 plus times. Glossing over the obvious is going to do nothing. Again you start to understand why certain teams are winning and landing recruiting battles. If glossing over things is your flavor. That's perfectly understandable.

Can we please tack the petition on top of the football board? Everyone hit the twitter and email wire contacting anyone that has any ounce of interest in syracuse sports..

Plus, I'm assuming its been easier for Robert to visit some of the other schools multiple times. TCU, for example - he was in the DFW area anyway for the International Bowl, so obviously, he's going to stop by and visit.

I said it at the time - if the International Bowl had been played in Buffalo, I'm sure Robert would have stopped by Syracuse, too. It's just a matter of geographical convenience.

Let just say they can't offer #44 to him. Okay how about recruiting him super hard until his commitment date. That's my point. It hasn't been done. This is not just about a number. It's about the lack of. You got the kids interest big time. Now Close! The fans deserve better. The fans have recruited the boy harder all jokes aside.

I hear you, man. I think you know where I stand on all this...ha. Man, I've been spending the last 24 hours or so doing just about nothing but trying to figure out any ways I can help, just as a fan, if there are any ways. (Much to my wife's annoyance...ha.)

I'm seriously hoping this all gets turned around. I legitimately believe Syracuse and Robert are a fantastic match. I'd hate to see things that are so easily fixable come between them.

I'm holding off until we see what happens. But I think I have something to say.

This is making me sick, and only further proving a belief I have.

I really hope someone wakes up, and starts running this like a big time program it should be.
