Dome Renovation

It's because of Miner that this would probably need to need outside of the City. Maybe there's room next to the Amphitheater.
retractable dome should be tied into destiny and the fairground renovation as well. with coordinated events --concerts,shopping etc etc. sightseeing(finger lake wine trails, niagra falls)monorail . fun to speculate

Boondoggle. You can barely get a cab at that airport. No need for a train.

Perception. If we had a modernized city, with easy public transport, it would be a start to a better national, even regional, view of Syracuse

I can't understand why we would want to connect the Dome to Destiny (a property that isn't doing well) or an outdoor amphitheater used 4 months a year, both of which happen to be miles away from and not readily accessible from the core of the University.

This would be the 2016 version of the baseball stadium and we all know how that turned out...

Right. They are not readily accessible from the core of the university. That's why some want to make them more accessible.

I have a hard time buying the fact that a kid that wants to get to the mall, cannot easily get there. The amount of kids driving land rovers and infinitys tells me they can get there the same way i do.

In my mini-van.

So we link the dome to a dying mall and an amphitheater that hold 25 events a year? I'm not completely against moving this away from Syracuse, but the notion that the amphitheater and Destiny should factor into any discussion is mind-boggling IMO. I didn't know Bragman was on the boards ;)

The SU braintrust should find a way to connect the ballpark to the dome. Conrail owns the train tracks so I don't know if that's a feasible option, a monorail would do it but how many people can be transported in one of those cars and how much $$ would it take to build it? We got the creek walk done, how about a dedicated trolley/bus lane on game days? I still think there is a giant opportunity to use the parking lots around the ballpark as tailgating for the suburban folk that complain about parking/traffic around the dome.

I don't know if this still applies, but in 2007 while working on heating/HVAC work S.U. put in the bid package no Carrier equipment is to be used on site.

If it doesn't, it certainly should. 'ck 'em!

This is disgusting to watch. I don't fault the poor schmuck on stage but the execs at this HIGHLY profitable company are more concerned with their shareholders than the good men and women who built the company.

This happened in Syracuse as well over the years, if I'm not mistaken. That along with the decades long FU of no air conditioning in the Carrier Dome and I won't be satisfied until Syverud and Coyle hatch a plan to dump the Carrier name and sell naming rights to another company.

Another HVAC company would be just fine by me.

How anyone (not employed by Carrier) could defend Carrier's right to keep their name on the Dome post renovation is beyond me. And they're out there I've gotten into it with them on this board before !

A couple quick points:

Let's remove sentimentality. Carrier is a corporation, Execs must in accordance with the law seek to improve the shareholder's (owners) interests. The move is justified in that regard. If everyone here bought stock and the Syracuse area bought stock, then they could sway the decisions changing the interest of the corporation.

That said, the move really stinks for Syracuse and Carrier should voluntarily remove their name, which they won't. I wold like to see the renovations be sufficient for a new name or better yet, shame Carrier with:

"Welcome to the Carrier Dome, climate controlled by Trane. Because, Nothing stops a Trane!" or something to that effect.

Bring Queen Nancy back. She'll build another Connective Corridor! :rolling:

If you think Destiny is a dying mall you obviously don't live here. It may seem to be dying at 1pm Tuesday but go by there on a weekend or 7pm any day and you'll see full or near full parking lots.
I live in CNY and do go there. They have lost significant tenants over the last few years and traffic isn't near where they anticipated. Their theory for the addition is on the verge of failure as well.

To be clear, Destiny won't die (I may have mischaracterized that a bit). It will be there, but it is not nearly the regional/national attraction it claimed it would become. Basing a decision like a Dome around this facility, in the face of its potential future and market dynamics that are really working against it, would be foolish.

The flaw in the thinking of the folks who built the baseball stadium was the provincial selfishness that their product stood alone and did not benefit from being connected in some fashion with the rest of the community. It's the same as your thinking that SU doesn't need the city, or Destiny. Don't get me wrong. I love it that SU has an on-campus Dome. But a transportation system from the Dome, to Armory Square, to Destiny/train station, to the airport??? That would be a slam dunk for Syracuse. and it would change both the perception and the functionality of this City, fuel growth and increase the quality of life as well.

They got screwed over. Project got delayed when the economy was booming. Got the approval finally when the economy had hit bottom. A true Syracuse cluster-#%€£.

What law says that shareholders have primacy over customers or employees?

There exists a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of their owners (shareholders). There is no law prohibiting locals from buying up Carrier stock and reversing the actions, but to date, that has not been done. Customers can only vote with their feet (wallets). In this case, if all of CNY quit buying Carrier units, it would not seriously impact the company and may only help to drive the wedge deeper between the corporation and city.

That in no way prohibits SU from obtaining another AC supplier and adding the comment to their marketing. Hopefully, the modifications are sufficient for eliminating Carrier's naming rights, only time will tell.

For the record, I do not support the Carrier decision, only providing analysis. I want Syracuse to thrive, it is my hometown and I will love the place.

You are putting words in my mouth. I would wholly support it going downtown and have never questioned the symbiotic nature of the relationship between SU/Syracuse. The notion that a transportation system connecting the new dome to an airport is the best economic development agent for Syracuse, let alone financially viable, makes no sense to me.

There is a different way of looking at corporate responsibility, which was enunciated, for example, by Robert Wood Johnson, founder of Johnson & Johnson, one of this country's enduring corporations. His "credo" designated 5 groups to be served: Customers were first, workers second, managers third, and communities fourth. Shareholders were the "fifth and last responsibility of the company".

A more recent example from Herb Kelleher, former CEO, Southwest Airlines (another fairly successful company). He stated "Your employees come first. And if you treat your employees right, guess what? Your customers come back, and that makes your shareholders happy."

The whole concept of "shareholder hegemony" has gained prominence only since the '70's.
