Comment: I think the conferences with single digit wins and some of those above that are clearly in the wrong division. The idea of divisions is to give everybody a shot at a championship they can win. What shot do these schools have? There should be either a Division 1AA or these conferences should be shifted back to Division II where they clearly belong.

It's interesting how some of the "power" programs (or at least high-profile ones) have very mediocre NCAA tourney records:

WVa 27-27
ND 37-39
Tennessee 19-21
Pitt 24-27
St John's 27-31
Texas 35-36
BYU 15-32!

Since The Big Dance ended I've been complaining some stats on conference NCAA records, looking at it several difference ways and here is the result.

Here are the year by year best performances by a conference in the NCAA tournament since 1975, the year teams other than the conference champions were allowed in the tournament. These are the conferences with the top five in number of wins each year with the number of losses being the tie breaker:

Big 8/12 1988, 2002, 2003 = 3 times

Not to be nitpicky because I really like this data, but just looking over it, the Big East's 2016 record caught my eye. They definitely had 5 teams in the tourney (Butler, Providence, Villanova, Seton Hall, Xavier) and thus should have 4 losses...

It's probably not the only error in there. I was scanning the fields, year by year and making a stroke tally.

What's the best single year by a conference?

If you go by wins - losses, the Big East was +12 in 1985 and the ACC +12 each of the last two years.

Bored Historian, EH! I think the key word there is "bored" :)

Now, having said that, I get a real kick out of all this type of stuff. Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to compile it.
