Class of 2017 SF Michael Porter Jr (MO) to Missouri

We never had a chance because we never pursued him. Even when he put out the word that he was interested in SU , we still didn't go after him. Yah we talked to him but didn't go after him hard. To lose him after a long hard fight is one thing, but to not give it your all and good ole college try ,is another.

Why bother? It's quite clear now that we were never going to get him - no matter how hard JB and crew worked at it.

All the time and effort they would have put into this fruitless recruitment, would have been at the expense of going harder after other options we have a better shot at.
Time and effort are finite resources.

Tell that to Calipari. And don't give me that crap that if the coaches didn't think he would fit. Have you seen this kid play? He is a beast to contend with. He is long and would fit the zone and and can shoot and make his own shot as well,

So, you know better than the HOF coach and his staff? Got it.

Maybe he told the staff he wasn't that interested. I don't know why we didn't go harder after him. Point is, neither do you.

Maybe they had been told that Romar was going to clear an assistant coaching slot for Porter's father.

All good on this one as it just wasn't meant to be. Unbelievable talent on both ends, Jerami Grant athleticism and defense with a scoring guard's offensive skill set at 6'9. God bless and let's enjoy this kid from across the country for a year. Best of luck!

What are the chances that JB foresaw that Porter may have expressed an interest in SU, but there was little or no chance he was going to do any more than maybe take the free visit??

JB is a competitive guy who likes to win. I don't believe for a minute that he is turning his back on top tier talent that wants to come here, unless there is a good reason. Ultimately you have to assess where your resources are best allocated and I trust JB to know better than anyone who he wants and who he believes he can be successful in getting.

More griping. The staff's recruiting resources are already limited by the sanctions. It's just smart to spend them wisely. It would be foolish to expend an all out effort on a player who is so likely to go elsewhere because of factors outside of our control. I don't know maybe his dad is a big man coach and we could fire GMac like that other poster suggested and bring him in. Eye roll.

None of the Duke, UNC, Kentucky type lineup here... kid is honestly cut from a different cloth then most highly ranked recruits.

That has more to do with them not hiring his daddy on staff. Any school not name Washington, is wasting their time recruiting him at this point.
I get that... as I mentioned previously his dad was involved with Athletes in Action along with Romar, so I have some direction relationship insights into their family dynamics (which are positive) through mutual friends. However, what I was meaning to say was high ranked guys want the noteriety of those big boy offers (we know Quade Green wants UK, whether or not he even ends up going there), this kid isn't window dressing with the same hype. Not right or wrong necessarily, just a different vibe from the usual top 2 or 3 player in the nation

That's a very unique set of final schools for a top prospect... honestly a bit refreshing to see
He picked one school from each of the P5. Two of them (Mizzou and OU) are hometown picks. One of them (Washington) is where he's actually going. The other two are his favorites from their respective conferences.

Well at least its clear why we didn't recruit him. Still sometimes its got to be worth it even as a long shot to bring a kid like this in on a visit. Who knows, maybe he loves the Melo center and it changes his recruitment.

Yeah, it would have at least have been fun to be in his final 5. I guess the staff just has to go out and land Bamba, Richards, Duval, Knox, Green, Walker and Diallo now.

We likely never had a chance but I'm not against trying when a kid is interested and he's that good. I still like where who we are involved with for 2017 and how well we seem top be positioned with most of these kids. I'd have no issues pushing hard with Duval again. We've made it clear that Quade is our #1 guy but that doesn't mean we have to sit tight.

I agree, go after these guys. I am sure the staff has a strategy and we will get a great class for 2017, but it would be nice to send JB out with a dream class. Green and Duval could possibly coexist. Ok, I don't think they could, but it is fun to dream. And yes, we don't want to be left with plan B if Green choses elsewhere. And I agree, inviting Porter to see the campus with his friend Moyer would be worthwhile.

You sure bout that?

I'm sure top notch recruiters like Sean Miller, Bill Self, Coach K, and Money Bags Cal, would be able to land them regardless of what "people" around them might think.
Yeah, somehow Cal talked Murray into going to UK after they already had Briscoe and Ulis. We certainly will have a ton of minutes to go around.
