3 Oregon football players hospitalized after 'grueling' workouts

Just to clarify, rhabdomyolis does not have to do with protein intake. Rhabdo is when you have such severe muscle damage that you have release of a breakdown product creatine phospho kinase (cpk). We see this often in crush injuries (wall collapsing on someone). Or for most people In general population cpk comes up when they have muscle pain while on a Statin for cholesterol control. Statins can sometimes lead to mild elevations.
In the current situation, over exertion and severe muscle breakdown leads to release of this pigment which in large amounts can cause obstruction of the kidney tubules. The myoglobin which body is trying to excrete leads to myoglobinuria and therefore dark urine. To prevent kidney failure and this myoglobin from blocking the kidneys they are admitted and given a ton of IV fluid to flush it out.
This is a clear case of over exertion IMO
I left out all this jargon because the steerage here doesn't understand myohobgoblins and the like the way we do.

Would a simple pre-conditioning test assist coaches in knowing which players have been actually working out and able to physically handle the more strenuous conditioning?

Seems pretty extreme to have hospitalizations be the warning that a player isn't prepared for team workouts.

it's a problem with the crossfit cult. out of shape people overdoing it and your muscles breakdown and mess up your organs. damn near killed one of my cousins (ex-athlete who forgot that she's not a spring chicken anymore)

Well said, the cross fit mentality is bogus. I am a clinical exercise physiologist. Cross fit people think they invented exercise. Newsflash: treadmills and dumbbells have been around for 70 years and will be around for another 100.

There is no way to really know who this will happen to. Most of us would probably just collapse and simply be unable to "tough" thru the point were we get rhabdo. But sure, being an early practice in season and not being in shape, not hydrating properly and maybe extreme weather can play a role too. (Heatstroke alone can do it)
Some people have underlying muscle disorders (myopathies) that can lead to this happening easier. Steroid use if I remember correctly can also contribute.
Good news, as long there is not some underlying myopathy they do fine. It is rare that someone needs Dialysis for acute kidney failure due to rhabdo. That is more likely in crush injury. (Earthquake and building collapsing on you)

It's the job of the players to tell the staff that they're out of shape, or not able to handle those workouts. Problem is those players won't admit that because it makes them look like dirt bags. It's not the staff's job to "hand hold" each one of the players.
That would mean taking personal responsibility for your own actions. That, unfortunately, is not the norm these days. Sad to say. People are always looking for others to blame for their own problems.
