Outside of a few players (Custis, Scissum) Shafer has been good about his redshirt management. He hasn't wasted someones shirt for special teams or spot play. This season, however, the amount of shirts getting burned for marginal or one game play is out of control and ridiculous.

Ellison
Womack
Hill
Perkins
Cody Conway (biggest head scratcher)
Giudice
Ealey
Sheppard

None of these is getting much run, and if they are it's marginal or on special teams. It's astounding.

His predecessor wasn't any better. Not saying that in defense of Shafer, just pointing out that it's been an unfortunate trend for a while.

Conways played in at least two games - and it makes sense. We need him next season and he needs experience.

Shepherd had an INT vs UVa and has been in the regular rotation and played well.

Ellison plays on ST and is very good there.

You have a head coach who is on the hot seat (in the eyes of some or many at least), needs to do whatever it takes to win this year. He is Not worried about next year or beyond he is just trying to win now

I agree with your post except about Sheppard he has been a regular on special teams and is the fourth defensive end.

Disagree. He could still be ready to play next year, without the few snaps this year. That's why most teams (and we are finally following suit) open with the easier games.

He'll be another one that we say I wish we had him for another year. We won't be saying he's as good as he is as a senior because of the dozen or so snaps we wasted as a true freshman.

If they're going to actually contribute (Dungey, Fredericks, Strickland, Clark) then sure. If not wait until an injury forces contribution, or save their year.

Shafer has bigger problems, so I don't expect him to care all that much, but it's unfortunate for the next guy, and the program's future.

Womack appears to be in on every special teams play

Meh. I could see a case made in either direction. If he's on the two deep and we need him ready, play him.

It's what happens when you change coaches every 3-4 years. Pretty soon we'll have as many coaches in the first two decades of the 21st century than we had ALL of last century.

Shafer covered this last month.

Said that if a kid is expected to start or play heavily next season, he wants him on the field this season.

Exactly. And reasonable people can argue both sides of that - but there really is no right or wrong answer.

Any way you look at it, playing this many true freshman points to the overall lack of talent in front of them.

Can we get over the change coaches every 3-4 years nonsense? I've been watching Syracuse football for almost 30 years and we've fired 2 coaches. Two others left for nfl HC jobs which is typically isn't looked at as a negative for a college program. I'd say a more damning fact than firing 2 coaches in three decades is having the most irrelevant program in major college football the last 15 years.

Womack appears to be in on very special teams play

And? There's other players who aren't true freshman that can play on the special teams. Special teams experience doesn't help much at all.
