Ennis: "If you get drafted late in the first round, you're making a million dollars, but half is gone to taxes. You gotta get your own crib, your own car. That's what people don't understand."

Translation: Be careful what you wish for...

And he has far less pressures from friends and family than a lot of the guys coming from very impoverished backgrounds. The 30 for 30 on this was enlightening.

Even if you do understand that - it's hard at that age to be conservative with your cash. In that environment, it's gotta be much, much harder.

500,000$ is still a lot to get a living space, car and improve your opportunity to improve/succeed. Think the money's more effected by pre draft baggage and or the people surrounding these kids.
Play 2 years, make $2m, take home probably $1.2m. 3% goes to the agent, or $60k. For a 19-22 year old, maybe with a kid, maybe with a girl, maybe with parents/siblings/grandparents he wants to relocate, and buy himself a nice apartment/condo/house in a big city, $1.1m really isn't a lot of money.

I'm willing to bet that NBA players have other revenue streams available to them than just their team salary...

Most do, but not all. The bench guys probably get local car commercials type deals, $5k at a time or so. And when you buy a $500k or $1m home when your expected playing career is 5 years, it's easy to go bankrupt by age 29

Federal minimum wage $7.25 per hour. Tone deaf much?

They can also work "real" jobs after they are done with the league.

I like Ennis but that is just an amazingly out of touch, pathetic comment.

Why? He just pointed out something that most people don't understand. He wasn't complaining. He's obviously well paid, but with the amount that goes to taxes, his agent, etc...it's not like he's living in a mansion and set for life the way some people(the ones that don't understand) assume for all "millionaire basketball players".

Yeah, not every professional athlete is making LeBron money. Once you get that second contract and have a few good to great seasons, maybe you're set then. Most draft picks don't make it to this point. Guys coming into the league making under a million, yeah the casual fan would kill for that salary, but $2m total over 2 years with zero guarantees, risk of injury etc. isn't a Clayton Kershaw contract.

I feel so bad for him. Tough life he has going in there.

He wasn't comparing himself to other people. He was commenting on what people think he makes vs what he actually makes. Probably has "cousins" and friends he had in a study hall once asking for handouts all the time.

Good for him realizing that his $ income is finite. Some players never realize it.

Sounds like he has regrets about leaving early.

What does out of touch mean in this context? What kind of comment would be "in touch" in your opinion?

More than 99.9% of people make in 2 years...
