SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 4 Syracuse University field team advances to its third Final Four in program history after a 3-1 win against No. 6 Penn State in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. It marks the second time in three seasons that Syracuse will play in the national semifinals.

"We were outstanding," head coach Ange Bradley commented. "We moved the ball incredibly well. We moved well off counters. I thought our passing game was really good today. It hasn't sunk in yet. I'm just so proud of these women. They are a really special group."

Syracuse (17-6) used three-first half goals to stymie Penn State (16-6) and advance to the Final Four. Senior forward Lauren Brooks, junior forward Emma Russell, and freshman forward Lies Lagerweij all scored in the team's quarterfinals victory.

For the second straight contest, the Orange scored in the opening 10 minutes to take an early advantage. Freshman forward Laura Hurff found an open Russell in the scoring circle in the sixth minute of play. Russell scored her 20th goal of the year to put the squad ahead 1-0. The Enniskerry, Ireland native now ranks third in program history with 41 career goals.

14 minutes later, the Orange was back at it. Brooks put a shot into the far post to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead. It marked the senior forward's 40th goal of her collegiate career, which ranks fifth in school history.

The team closed out the half with a goal from Lagerweij in the 29th minute. Graduate student forward Kati Nearhouse sent a ball across the circle and Lagerweij tapped it in for the team's final tally of the day.

Junior goalkeeper Jess Jecko was phenomenal in goal for the Orange. Jecko made seven saves on the game and did not surrender a goal until the 69th minute of play when Penn State senior forward Jenna Chrismer scored. For the second day in-a-row, Jecko made a diving stop on a penalty stroke.

Penn State redshirt senior goalkeeper Kylie Licata turned away 15 shots from the Orange on Sunday afternoon. 18 of Syracuse's 19 shots came on goal in the quarterfinal win.

The Orange will take on No. 1 North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament semifinals on Friday, Nov. 21 in College Park, Md. Game times have not been officially announced yet. Check back on Cuse.com for game times and ticket information.

Five Orange Earn All-Region Honors
Four named First Team All-Mideast Region

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Five members of the No. 4 Syracuse University field hockey team earned 2014 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast Region accolades, the NFHCA announced on Monday morning. Four Orange student-athletes were named to the first team, while one was recognized on the second team.

Graduate student forward Kati Nearhouse, junior midfielder Alyssa Manley, junior forward Emma Russell, and freshman midfielder Lieke Visser all received First Team All-Mideast Region honors. Senior back Jordan Page was named to the second team.

For the second straight year, Manley, Page, and Russell all earned All-Mideast Region accolades. After sitting out the 2013 season, Nearhouse made her third all-region team in her collegiate career. Visser became the first Syracuse freshman to earn all-region honors since 2012, as well.

A co-captain, Nearhouse has provided veteran leadership for the 2014 Syracuse field hockey team. A three-time all-region performer, she has eight points on three goals and two assists in 2014. In her first game in an Orange uniform, Nearhouse tallied two goals against Ball State on Sept. 7. The Nanticoke, Pa. native also recorded an assist on the team's final goal in its 3-1 victory against Penn State in the NCAA quarterfinals on Nov. 16.

Manley was named to the All-Mideast Region First Team for the second straight year. An anchor in the Syracuse midfield, Manley has 14 points on three goals and eight assists this season. The Lititz, Pa. native was named to the All-ACC Second Team and All-ACC Championship Team, as well.

Russell is the squad's leading scorer heading into the 2014 NCAA Tournament semifinals. The Enniskerry, Ireland native has 44 points on 20 goals and four assists. Russell has been on a tear since the start of the month of October, tallying 14 goals in 12 contests. She also leads the team with seven game-winning goals, including four in overtime. In addition, Russell just became the fourth player in program history to top the 100-point plateau, and now has 101 points on 41 goals and 19 assists for her collegiate career.

Visser has proven she can do it all in first season on campus. The Bunnik, Netherlands native ranks second on the team in scoring with 37 points on 10 goals and 17 assists. Visser leads the team in assists and ranks third on the club in goals scored. She scored the final goal of the day in the NCAA Tournament first round win against Boston University on Nov. 15.

Page has proven to be a star on both ends of the pitch for the Orange. She has 30 points on eight goals and 14 assists for the 2014 season. The Denver, Pa. native serves as one of the team's stick stoppers and penalty stroke options. On the other end of the pitch, Page has helped the back line to three shutouts on the year.

The Syracuse field hockey team advanced to its third Final Four in program history and will take on No. 1 North Carolina in the national semifinals on Friday, Nov. 21. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. in College Park, Md. All session tickets are $18 for adults and $14 for youth, seniors, and students. Friday Night Field Hockey, Saturday XC and Sunday Soccer. What a great way to spend the weekend!

Hmm... I think there are some other SU games in there somewhere. ;)
Maybe I should have prefaced that for the Olympic sports fan or something along that line. But yes throw in BB and FB and it will be a big big Orange weekend no doubt.
