Welcome to Fat Tuesday!

Mardi Gras (/ˈmɑːrdiɡrɑː/), also called Shrove Tuesday,[1] or Fat Tuesday,[2][3][4][5][6] in English, refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three King's Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

Related popular practices are associated with Shrovetide celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent. In countries such as England, Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove Tuesday, which is derived from the word shrive, meaning "confess".[1]

Syracuse Remains Unloved in AP College Basketball Poll (PS; Waters)

Despite winning six of its last seven games to improve to 16-8 on the season, the Syracuse Orange still isn't receiving any votes in the Associated Press' college basketball poll.

Syracuse (16-8 overall, 6-5 ACC) did not crack the AP's Top 25 when the poll was released on Monday. The Orange didn't even receive a single vote in this week's poll.

The last time Syracuse received a vote in the AP poll was for the week of Dec. 14.

Syracuse received three votes in the Dec. 14 poll, which came out one day after the Orange's loss to St. John's. That loss dropped Syracuse's record to 6-3. A week later, the Orange was completely out of the rankings after not receiving any votes despite winning its only game in that week.

Syracuse has won six of its last seven games to dig its way out of an 0-4 start in ACC play. Syracuse is 16-8 overall and 12-3 with Jim Boeheim on the sidelines. Syracuse went 4-5 while Boeheim served a nine-game suspension.

Among the schools in Others Receiving Votes were UNC Wilmington, Chattanooga and Monmouth.

Syracuse will host Florida State on Thursday night at the Carrier Dome.

Wish List for Next Visitors to Dome Includes Kansas for Basketball (the juice; Bierman)

...
While Syracuse and Kansas have met most famously in the 2003 NCAA title game at the Louisiana
Superdome in New Orleans, where the Orange got “those four seconds back” for Boeheim, there have also been two other NCAA meetings; the memorable Elite Eight West Regional game at Denver in 1996 in which the SU 2-3 zone flummoxed the Jayhawks into 34% shooting (22 of 64!) in a 60-57 victory to advance to the Final Four, and a dominating 87-58 KU win in a 2001 second round Midwest Regional game at Dayton.

Now, while Syracuse has played at legendary Allen Field House in Lawrence, a 1968 blowout loss 71-41, and playing man-to-man defense (believe it or not) during a crucial second half stretch, got by the Jayhawks 89-81 at their other nearby “home court” the Sprint Center in Kansas City in the 2008 early season CBE Classic title game, the reverse situation has never occurred.

Similar to the Alabama scenario in football, Kansas is the only school among the top 11 programs in all time victories that has not played hoops in front of a large Dome crowd, but even with the ‘Cuse annually obligated to play in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, this should be an easy one to set up with all of the constituents involved, Boeheim (or Mike Hopkins) and Coyle and counterparts Bill Self and Sheahon Zenger (who like Coyle has a Drake University connection), the ACC and Big XII, and TV partners ESPN and FOX.

Craig Forth to be Honored at 45th Syracuse Men's Basketball Hardwood Banquet (TNIAAM; Keeley)

Finally, Craig Forth gets his due as the most important member of the 2003 National Championship team.

The former SU center will be awarded the Vic Hanson Medal of Excellence at the 45th annual Syracuse University Men's Basketball Hardwood Banquet on Sunday, March 6 at the Oncenter.

The Vic Hanson Medal of Excellence will be presented to Craig Forth, a member of Syracuse's 2003 NCAA Championship team and one of the few Orange performers to start every game of his career. Forth was with the first unit for 136 games from 2001-02 to 2004-05. Syracuse was 103-33 during that span.

Forth averaged 4.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots during his career. Three of the squads he played on made NCAA Tournament appearances.

Forth earned a number of academic awards while attending Syracuse. He was presented the BIG EAST Conference Aeropostale Scholar-Athlete Award during his senior season. Forth was a two-time Academic All-American (2003-04, third team; 2004-05, second team). He was on the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of his eight semesters. Forth earned a spot on the BIG EAST Conference All-Academic Team after each of his four campaigns.

An inclusive education and geography major at Syracuse, Forth worked as an elementary school teacher after earning his degree. He is currently an assistant principal at Mechanicville Junior-Senior High School (N.Y.).

Tyus Battle Will Lead Them

Previewing the 2016-17 Syracuse Basketball Team (insidetheloudhouse.com; Stone)

With Syracuse basketball still in the midst of their nine day hiatus (thanks ACC scheduling committee), I figured it was a good time to take a very brief sneak preview of what is in store for the Orange next year.

First let’s talk about what Syracuse basketball is losing: Michael Gbinije and Trevor Cooney. That’s their top two scorers and top two three point shooters. It’s also the team’s top two leaders in steals, the two best defenders, and their leader in assists (Gbinije). That’s an awful lot to be losing off a team that already had a number of question marks this year.

Bottom line, you just don’t replace that kind of talent and seniority in the back court easily. Gbinije especially will be a tough loss to absorb. In his three years at Syracuse, he has transformed into one of the most complete players in the ACC. He currently ranks fifth in the ACC in points per game, fifth in assists per game, and first in steals. In fact, he’s 14th in all of division one in steals per game. Those are some incredibly impressive stats.

So how do we cope with that kind of loss? It starts with the addition of Tyus Battle. Battle, as I mentioned in an article on Saturday, is an incredibly gifted guard who will have an immediate impact for Syracuse basketball. He’s an adept scorer, passer, rebounder, and defender. Similar to Gbinije, he has a well-rounded game that should allow him to transition seamlessly to the college level.

The rest of the guard rotation will be quite thin and will consist of Franklin Howard, Kaleb Joseph (if he stays), and Malachi Richardson. Based on that, it’s a toss up at this point whether Battle will be at point or whether that honor will go to Howard. Either way, it’s going to be a big transition and their will be some growing pains.

City Residents: We Will Lose Our Voice in City-County Merger (PS; Doran)

Several Syracuse residents who attended Monday's public comment session on the proposed government consolidation say they're worried it's a bad idea.

"We would lose our voice," said Alfonso Davis of Syracuse. "We would lose our political power, and our voice would become silent."

Many agreed the Consensus recommendations seem likely to weaken or strip Syracuse residents of their voice without any real benefit. Others expressed concern that the public comment period, which ends March 16, doesn't give residents enough time to consider the proposals and submit comments.

Monday's public comment session, held at the Southwest Community Center in Syracuse, drew about 50 people. This is the second session held at the center; other meetings are behind held throughout the city and Onondaga County.

The 19-member Commission on Local Government Modernization, or Consensus for short, issued a report in late January with 51 recommendations for streamlining and improving government operations in Syracuse and Onondaga County.

Am I missing the volume control on that podcast applet? The thing is alarmingly loud!

EDIT: Found it, completely separated from the app way on the bottom of the screen...
