Twilight-Zone-Day.jpg

Welcome to National Twilight Zone Day!

Twilight Zone Day is mysterious, weird, surreal and perhaps a little scary. We can think of many other adjectives, but I think you get the picture. Every once in a while, you have a day like this. And, today is designed to be that day.

The television show The Twilight Zone, was created, written and narrated by Rod Serling. It premiered on October 1, 1959. The episodes were wildly popular, stretched the imagination, and captivated viewers. The show aired from 1959-1964.

Big Board 1.0: U of L's Top 2017 Recruiting Targets (courier-journal.com; Greer)

The Louisville basketball recruiting Big Board is back, with a new focus on the 2017 class.

TREVON DUVAL
Size: 6-3, 175. 247Sports Composite national rank: 5. Has U of L offered? Yes. Also considering: Arizona, Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Maryland, Syracuse, Villanova, many others. AAU team: We R 1 (Under Armour).

The top point guard in the class has been pretty quiet about his recruiting process. He obviously has a ton of teams pursuing him.

QUADE GREEN
Size: 5-11, 160. 247Sports Composite national rank: 39. Has U of L offered? Yes. Also considering: Duke, Michigan State, Syracuse, others. AAU team: PSA Cardinals (Nike).

Keep an eye on Green, a fantastic point guard who leads the Nike EYBL circuit in assists. He appears to be very close with Syracuse, but he spoke highly of Louisville, too, saying he talks a lot with Rick Pitino and Kenny Johnson. He also said he definitely plans to make an official visit to U of L this summer.

BRANDON RANDOLPH
Size: 6-6, 180. 247Sports Composite national rank: 57. Has U of L offered? Yes. Also considering: Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, North Carolina, Villanova, many others. AAU team: PSA Cardinals (Nike).

A lanky off-guard who is one of the top shooters and scorers on the Nike AAU circuit, Randolph has quite a few connections to Louisville, mainly through former star guard Russ Smith. Randolph and his family are close with Smith's dad, and they are from Yonkers, N.Y.

JORDAN TUCKER

Size: 6-7, 205. 247Sports Composite national rank: 31. Has U of L offered? No. Also considering: Connecticut, Indiana, Maryland, Oklahoma, St. John's, Syracuse, others. AAU team: NY Rens (Nike).

He's a big wing and an AAU teammate of Hamidou Diallo, who is one of the top scorers in the 2017 class. Louisville has been in touch with him, but no offer yet.

Howard Garfinkel Lived Basketball, And His Impact on the Game Ran Deep (si.com; Davis)

The tributes have poured in from all over the basketball world ever since Howard Garfinkel passed away on Saturday morning. They came from former players, now aged and aching in their joints. From veteran coaches, their faces weathered by time. Writers, AAU coaches, scouts, gym rats, businessmen, teachers, lawyers, doctors—no matter how well they knew him, they paid respects to the hardwood icon known as Garf. It was a simple nickname for a simple man who once lorded over a much simpler time.

Garfinkel’s death last Saturday morning was hardly a surprise. How many men can chain smoke for decades and still make it to 86? It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that Garf was diagnosed with lung cancer. After his last hospital stay, his friends knew he didn’t have much time left, so they called him around the clock and asked how he felt, only to hear him take the conversation in another direction (toward basketball, of course, always basketball). Garf was nothing if not a man of habits. He smoked. He ate. He drank. He bet the ponies. He loved hoops. And then he died. Ain’t that America.

Garf was, of course, known best for being the founder of the Five-Star Basketball Camps, which during their 60-plus years in existence provided countless players and coaches with a forum to learn the game and gain access to opportunities. But that doesn’t fully explain why his passing was felt so profoundly. Garf was a great guy but he was also the Great Connector. When he died, it felt like all those connections died a little, too.

Syracuse Parochial League to be Honored Sunday Afternoon (PS; Poliquin)

Sometimes the job in this thin slice of cyberspace is to opine; sometimes it's to serve as a messenger.

Consider this an example of the latter …

The old Syracuse Parochial League will be saluted on Sunday afternoon between 1-6 p.m. at the Syracuse Polish Home at 915 Park Ave. in Syracuse.

Former players and coaches from that league, once the high-school basketball toast of our town, will gather to reminisce.

Admission will be free, but food and drink (for sale) will be available.

For more information, please contact Brian Langdon at bbangers74@hotmail.com.
