Welcome to Flitch Day!

"A custom of giving a flitch of bacon to any married couple who would swear that neither of them, in a year and a day, either sleeping or waking, repented of their marriage." This custom turned into a celebrated holiday.

What is a Flitch?
A flitch is measurement of bacon, equaling half a pig. (Flitch = side)
In the United States: A side of unsliced bacon was once known as a flitch- it is now known as a slab. An individual slice of bacon is a slice or strip.
What is this Holiday for?
An old English custom from long ago eventually turned into the holiday called Flitch Day, which is celebrated on July 19th. Every year on this day, since about 1104, any married couple who could prove they had been faithful and loving to one another for one year was awarded half a pig, known as a flitch of bacon. However, very few couples would actually "bring home the bacon!"

Sources: ESPN-backed ACC Network set for '19 (ESPN; McMurphy)

The long-awaited ACC Network will launch by August 2019, according to league sources.

The Atlantic Coast Conference and ESPN have agreed to a 20-year deal and rights extension through the 2035-36 academic year, sources said.

The ACC also extended its conference grant of rights deal nine years through 2035-36, a source said.

The conference's grant of rights makes it untenable financially for a school to leave, guaranteeing in the 20 years of the deal that a school's media rights, including revenue, for all home games would remain with the ACC regardless of the school's affiliation.

The ACC's new grant of rights also automatically extends Notre Dame's contract with the conference as a member in all sports but football through 2035-36, a source said. If the Irish forgo football independence in the next 20 years, they are contracted to join the ACC.

Former Syracuse basketball forward B.J. Johnson gained weight, worked on overall game (PS; Ditota)

B.J. Johnson was somewhat inconspicuous in the Philadelphia University gymnasium. The former Syracuse basketball player lives in the area. He graduated from Lower Merion High School. Last year, after he declared he would transfer from SU and subsequently enroll at LaSalle, he attended The Basketball Tournament games featuring former Orange teammates and players he'd known while at Syracuse.

A year later, with a team of former LaSalle players scheduled to play right after Boeheim's Army, Johnson drove to the same gym to see more of the same faces. He spoke with players he knew on the Syracuse roster, greeted other Philadelphia-area folks who knew him and watched Boeheim's Army defeat Basketball City NYC Saturday night.

Johnson said a few Syracuse fans approached him, but "nothing too crazy." He has spent the last year working to add bulk to his once-willowy 6-foot-7 frame. In the year since he left Syracuse, he said, he has concentrated on gaining weight.

"I'm up 15 pounds from last year," he said. "I just stopped eating so much junk and started eating better food. And I just ate a lot more than I did before."

Video: Ride with us on the new zipline at Niagara Falls (newyorkupstate.com; Candeo)

The anticipation is over: the new zipline ride at Niagara Falls opened over the weekend, and plenty of people were there to experience the thrill for themselves.

WildPlay's MistRider Zipline to the Falls on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls debuted Friday, with its official grand opening taking place Wednesday, July 20.

Joed Viera of newyorkupstate.com used a GoPro to provide a firsthand account of the zipline on Saturday. Watch the video above.

Anticipation for the ride quickly built after WildPlay announced the zipline in June. The ride features four parallel ziplines, travelling 2,200 feet through the Niagara Gorge.

"If you put your arms and legs out, like a starfish, you can make the ride last a little longer. That's what I like to do," Lindsay DiCosimo, marketing manager of WildPlay MistRider, told the Buffalo News.

WildPlay is located at 5850 River Road, Niagara Falls, ON, at the Grandview Marketplace, which is accessed from an elevator outside the tower used by Hornblower Cruises. Tickets cost $49.99 Canadian per person.
