Welcome to National Hamburger Day!

On this Day in 1900 the first ‘hamburgers’ were served at Louis’ Lunch diner in New Haven, Connecticut.

Five Food Finds about Hamburgers
  1. The oldest fast food restaurant in the world is the White Castle franchise, which opened in 1921.
  2. The people of America eat more burgers out at restaurants or on the go than they do at home.
  3. The largest hamburger ever created was over 8,000 pounds and was cooked for a burger festival in Wisconsin.
  4. However, the hamburger in its current form, with ground beef and a bun, is a decidedly American creation.
  5. Hamburgers are made of beef, not ham, and there is much debate over whether they actually originated in Hamburg.

Carmelo Anthony returns for shot at third Olympic gold medal (usatoday.com; Zillgitt)

Carmelo Anthony wasn’t sure if he wanted to play in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

His close friends — LeBron James, Chris Paul andDwyane Wade — weren’t going, and others told him, “Don’t do it,” according to Anthony.

But he heard from another faction, too: the players committed to Rio, and they encouraged Anthony to come back for a chance to win a third Olympic gold medal, an accomplishment no American men’s basketball player has achieved.

“They were saying, ‘It’s your time, your Olympics. You should take advantage of this opportunity,’ ” Anthony said. “Once the guys started reaching out and talking to me about that, it felt good to hear my colleagues want me to have that.”

And Anthony, who is finding his voice as social leader, heard from another important person. Jim Boeheim, Anthony’s college coach at Syracuse who is a U.S. assistant, encouraged him to play about a week before the NBA Finals began.

“I don’t try to tell him what to do,” Boeheim said. “He’s his own man, but I wanted him to play.”

Boeheim then gave Anthony reasons why playing is a good idea.
“I told him two things 'You can help us. We need a veteran guy. Second, you’ve been losing for three years. Let’s get a good basketball experience. This is something you really should do,' " Boeheim said.

Missing Lake Erie fisherman may have faked his own death (PS; Tampone)

Authorities believe a missing fisherman they've been searching for the last two days may have faked his own death.

The Coast Guard has been searching for 37-year-old Giusseppe Reinhart of Niagara Falls, Ontario since his boat washed up on the shore of Lake Erie in Hamburg on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Reinhart left Tuesday morning to go fishing by himself. His boat was found filled with beer, fishing gear and recently caught fish, according to the Buffalo News.

A man-overboard signal was sounding when the boat was found, the News said.

But authorities are investigating the possibility that Reinhart, who served time in prison for manslaughter, may have tried to fake his own death, according to the News.

His family members are worried, but don't believe he had anything to do with his own disappearance, the News said.

Reinhart's mother, Enelia, told the News her son had been fishing for several days in a row. She said fishing was his life.

Both Enelia and Reinhart's brother told authorities the missing man would never attempt suicide or try to flee Canada.
