Welcome to National Chicken Wing Day!

Whether you like them hot and spicy, sticky sweet or plain Jane and whether your prefer them served with blue cheese, plum sauce or celery sticks, chicken wings have to be the most versatile protein on the planet. Americans have been attesting to this fact, gobbling up wings by the boat-load with more than 27 billion eaten in 2013 and 1.23 billion wings consumed during Super Bowl weekend alone. That’s over 100-million pounds of wings. To give you some idea of what that looks like picture the chicken wings laid out end to end -- they’d circle the perimeter of the Earth not once but twice!

Here's a round-up of where to snag free or discounted wings:

  • Buffalo Wild Wings is offering half-priced wings on Friday.
  • Hooters is offering all-you-can-eat traditional wings and boneless wings for $14.99 and $12.99, respectively. However, prices may vary by location.

Mixed Juice: Who will start for 2016-17 Syracuse basketball? (the juice; staff)

In the latest edition of a multi-part series, editorial staff of The Juice Online discuss various topics on Syracuse athletics. Today’s topic: As the 2016-17 Syracuse basketball season approaches, the roster has mostly taken shape. Who will start? The Juice Online’s Saugat Sen and Wes Cheng weighed in.

Wesley Cheng: Saugat, barring a graduate transfer (Andrew White?), the 2016-17 Syracuse basketball roster is set. So I ask you: Who will be the starting five for this season?

Saugat Sen: It has been quite a while since we had so many new faces that may end up in the starting five. Last year, we knew fifth year seniors Michael Gbinije and Trevor Cooney were guaranteed a spot, as was freshman superstar Malachi Richardson. Now, they’re all gone. Even without Andrew White, Syracuse has five new players that can make an impact: Taurean Thompson, Paschal Chukwu, Tyus Battle, John Gillon and Matt Moyer. The front court appears to be set. Seniors Dajuan Coleman, Tyler Roberson, and likely 2017 NBA lottery pick, Tyler Lydon. So who do you have starting in the backcourt?

WC: You’re right. Lydon and Roberson are definitely locked into the starting lineup. I’m less sure about Coleman given the defensive abilities of Chukwu, but Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim has tended to want to play seniors in the starting five, even if it’s just a “ceremonial” role (think Craig Forth). That deference to experience leads me to think that Gillon will start, and if graduate transfer Andrew White commits to Syracuse, he will join Gillon in the backcourt. If White comes to Syracuse, do you have him starting?

Syracuse Basketball Recruiting: 2017 Target Hameir Wright Considering Prep School (TNIAAM; Constas)

Wright is on track to graduate high school in 2017, but he might wait another year before going to college.

Almost two weeks ago, ESPN's Jeff Borzello tweeted that Class of 2017 forward Hameir Wright, a Syracuse Orange target, told ESPN that he was going to take a post graduate year and reclassify to the Class of 2018. While Wright may still be weighing his options of where he will play basketball after the 2016-17 season, he will not be reclassifying, according to his AAU coach Jim Hart.

In order to reclassify, a high school student is either moving ahead or back a year due to their academic standing. If there are academic issues, a recruit would consider going back a year, while recruits with sufficient credits may decide to graduate early. According to Syracuse.com, Albany City Rocks coach Hart says Wright is on track to graduate from Albany Academy in the spring. Upon his completion of high school, Wright may consider taking a prep year before going to college.

If Wright were to reclassify, he would be in junior standing for 2016-17, so by definition of the word reclassify, it does not seem like this is the route he will be taking. However, he is turning 17 next week and he will be that age when he graduates in the spring, making him young for his class. This is why Hart believes Wright is keeping his options open for a post grad year at a prep school as opposed to going straight to college.

Anthony has become the unlikely face of Team USA (espn; Friedell)

Even Carmelo Anthony is struggling to process the enormity of his Olympic accomplishments.

The New York Knicks superstar and Team USA stalwart is on the verge of becoming the first American man to ever participate in four Olympic basketball tournaments.

"It really hasn't sunk in yet about the fact that I'm playing in four Olympics and have an opportunity to win three gold medals," Anthony said before the U.S. men's basketball team practice on Thursday. "I think about it, but I haven't really sat down and put everything into perspective. A lot of times when you're going through these situations you tend to not put so much focus on the whole process and the journey until after the fact."

As much as Anthony tries to shy away from the possibilities, the fact is he could become the most decorated Olympic men's basketball player in American history if Team USA rolls to its third straight gold medal in Rio next month, as expected. He's also in line for a slew of other Olympic men's basketball records.

518 debate: Upstate NY region mulls 'pain in the neck' addition of 2nd area code (PS; Tribune News Service)

The days of the 518 area code blanketing the Upstate New York region from the Catskills to Canada and from the eastern Mohawk Valley to the Vermont border are coming to a close.

A public hearing in Colonie's Town Hall on Thursday allowed residents to ask questions and submit public comment as the state considers how to proceed when all possible phone numbers with a 518 heading are exhausted. The Department of Public Service predicts the supply will be depleted by the first quarter of 2019.

In one solution, existing numbers would not be affected, while new numbers would receive a separate area code. In another, the geographic region would be divided into two areas, and all numbers in one of those areas would be assigned the new area code.

About 25 people attended Thursday's event. Those who submitted public comment favored the "overlay" method, in which no existing numbers would change. Proponents called it less intrusive for residents and businesses, which would not need to alter marketing.

Several people criticized the placement of the geographic line that would split the region into two. The city of Schenectady and Saratoga Springs fall above the line, which cuts through Albany County. The city of Albany and Troy are below.

The region that would retain the 518 area code would be determined after the decision on whether to split the region is made.
