Welcome to National Watermelon Day!

Watermelon is the perfect fruit to enjoy on August 3rd. It is also National Watermelon Day. Enjoyed by many, it is a favorite at summertime events such as picnics and fairs. Watermelon is 92% water, which is why it is so refreshing.

Watermelon is a vine-like flowering plant originally from southern Africa. Its fruit, which is also called watermelon, is a special kind referred to by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp). Pepos are derived from an inferior ovary and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae. The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon – although not in the genus Cucumis – has a smooth exterior rind (usually green with dark green stripes or yellow spots) and a juicy, sweet interior flesh (usually deep red to pink, but sometimes orange, yellow, or white).

Onondaga County Legislature seeks to keep the Chiefs at NBT Stadium (PS; Baker)

The Syracuse Chiefs may get a new, better deal on their building today.

The Onondaga County Legislature will vote this afternoon on a new contract for the Syracuse Chiefs at NBT Stadium. The contract offers some financial concessions to the Chiefs, which county officials say will keep the ball club in town.

Under the proposed contract, the Chiefs' rent at the county-owned NBT Stadium would rise from $136,000 to about $200,000. The county, however, would take over costs for utilities and field maintenance at the stadium.

The Chiefs asked the county to consider a cut in rent earlier this year, aftersuffering $169,000 in losses in 2015. That deficit was 30 percent less than the previous year, but the team is still in the red.

In a meeting last month, Legislature Chairman Ryan McMahon estimated utility costs at $200,000 to $250,000 per year. Maintenance costs in 2015 were $193,555. McMahon said in terms of dollars and cents, the deal is not a good one for the county, but the new contract is more in line with standard commercial leases and will help the struggling club stay in Syracuse.

In the same meeting, Deputy County Executive Bill Fisher said the team has a positive economic impact on the community.
