Welcome to 'Black Cow' Root Beer Float Day!

The first root beer float - so the story goes - was served on August 19th, 1893, by Frank J. Wisner, owner of Cripple Creek Brewing, in Cripple Creek, Colorado. He called his creation the "Black Cow Mountain," and it soon became a hit with the kiddos, who began referring to the tasty treat as simply, the "Black Cow."

Nowadays, a root beer float means different things to different folks. For some, it's not a root beer float unless you use plain vanilla ice cream dolloped into your root beer. Others put a little spin on things: plopping some chocolate ice cream into their root beer and calling it a "chocolate cow" or a "brown cow." Still others insist it's only a "brown cow" or a "black cow" if you use regular cola and ice cream. Then there's folks in places such as northeastern Wisconsin, who only call it a "black cow" if the root beer and ice cream are all mixed together, instead of leaving the ice cream floating on top. And would you believe, there's also a such thing as a "purple cow?" Yup, a "purple cow," created when you put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a mug of purple grape soda.

But what do you call a black-and-white cow in a hot pink bikini, floating in a giant mug of root beer and melting vanilla ice cream?

Blissfully content.

A more mature Carmelo Anthony finds himself as Team USA's leader (baltimoresun.com; Walker)

When Carmelo Anthony was a young boy, sharpening his shot and dribble on the playgrounds of West Baltimore, he never once fathomed a day when he'd own a pile of Olympic medals.

"I never even thought about the Olympics, to be honest with you," he said, his forehead glistening after a Team USA workout at the Flamengo Club near Ipanema beach. "When I was growing up in Baltimore, my thing was just to get to high school, get out of high school and whatever happens after that, happens after that. The Olympics were far-fetched from my goals."

At 32, Anthony is now playing in his fourth Olympics — the United States will face Spain in the semifinal round Friday — and seeking to become the first male player to win three gold medals. More than that, the national team has offered a kind of salvation for the former Towson Catholic star, a respite from the criticism he receives while doing his regular job as the face of the perennially disappointing New York Knicks.

"I think he came back this time because he thought he'd be the leader; he had not been the man and now he is," said Jim Boeheim, Anthony's college coach at Syracuse and an assistant for this year's Olympic team. "And I think because he's had a couple of not good years in New York, and he knew he'd have a good basketball experience."

Jim Boeheim Olympic report: Team USA back on track, Barkley is wrong, selfies in Rio (PS; Poliquin)

Jim Boeheim's Olympic Report No. 8:

You know, because we'd had those three tough games in a row against Australia, Serbia and France, we needed what happened with Argentina. We needed to go out there and be more aggressive on both ends of the court. We wanted to establish a little separation.

And we did.

Our guys realized that we're in the medal round now and they responded really well (beating the Argentines 105-78 on Wednesday in the Summer Olympics quarterfinals). Argentina is a veteran team, a tough team, and they got off to a great start. We were down 19-9 and we could have gotten a little nervous, but we just took off and played great.

Kevin Durant got us going and then the bench came in and did an unbelievable job. Paul George and Jimmy Butler and DeMarcus Cousins and Kyle Lowry went on something like a 29-2 run. And that's not easy to do in international ball.

Everybody got involved, and it was a good win. It was a first step. We had to make that first step, and it was an impressive first step. On the other hand, both Spain and Australia looked great on Wednesday so, obviously, the toughest games are ahead of us. But beating Argentina, especially the way we did, made for a really good win.

ACC Network Extra launching this Friday (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

ACC Network Extra officially arrives this Friday, August 19. You’ve heard all about how ESPN and the ACC would be launching digitally this fall, three years before an actual cable/satellite network in 2019. Now that digital network is here, per a release from the ACC today.

Current users with access to Watch ESPN and the ESPN app will get immediate access to the Olympic sports content set to air on the digital network. According to the ACC, 331 events will air this fall, all in Olympic sports (so not football or basketball). They’re the first of a total of more than 600 games to air on ACC Network Extra during the 2016-17 academic year.

Syracuse will not appear on ACC Network Extra until September 9, when Orange men’s soccer visits NC State. A total of 16 Orange men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and field hockey games will appear on ACC network Extra during the fall season.

If you’re interested in just checking out the new network to see what things look like (probably a similar broadcast to ACC Network/ACC Digital Network properties right now), you can watch Duke women’s soccer host Wofford at 5 p.m. ET this Friday. Full schedule (PDF) of the entire fall broadcast schedule is posted here.

Hooray for the (sort of) ACC Network!
