Welcome to Talk Like a Pirate Day!

International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD, September 19) is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), of Albany, Oregon,[1]U.S., who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.[2] For example, an observer of this holiday would greet friends not with "Hello," but with "Ahoy, matey!" The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized view of theGolden Age of Piracy.

According to Summers, the day is the only known holiday to come into being as a result of a sports injury. During a racquetball game between Summers and Baur, one of them reacted to the pain with an outburst of "Aaarrr!", and the idea was born. That game took place on June 6, 1995, but out of respect for the observance of the Normandy landings, they chose Summers' ex-wife's birthday, as it would be easy for him to remember.[1][3]

At first an inside joke between two friends, the holiday gained exposure when John Baur and Mark Summers sent a letter about their invented holiday to the American syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry in 2002.[4] Barry liked the idea and promoted the day.[4] Growing media coverage of the holiday after Barry's column has ensured that this event is now celebrated internationally, and Baur and Summers now sell books and T-shirts on their website related to the theme. Part of the success for the international spread of the holiday has been attributed to non-restriction of the idea or non-trademarking, in effect opening the holiday to creativity and "viral" growth.[5]

Ethan Thompson, ESPN 4-star SG, to decide between Oregon State, Stanford and Syracuse on Monday (oregonlive.com; Nemec)

Since Wayne Tinkle and his staff took over the Oregon State men's basketball program, the recruiting effort has been a family affair.

Tinkle and assistant coach Stephen Thompson each registered the commitments of their ESPN four-star sons – Tres Tinkle and Stephen Thompson Jr. – in the class of 2015.

Fast forward two years and Oregon State may be at it again, as ESPN four-star shooting guard Ethan Thompson, the No. 51 prospect nationally, is set to announce his college decision Monday at 5 p.m. (PT), choosing between Oregon State, Stanford and Syracuse.

"The top three are Oregon State, Syracuse and Stanford," Thompson said. "Stanford is obviously a great academic school and has a great coaching staff. And obviously it's in California. Syracuse has a legendary coaching staff. Far away from home in the cold weather, but they are also a great basketball program. They always make it far in the NCAA tournament."

Fresh off an official visit to Oregon State, Thompson had a special experience in Corvallis.

"I had a wonderful time. It was everything I expected and more – great coaching staff," he said. "And now I met a bunch of people – from the president at the university to the compliance. Seeing my family made it more special. Just thinking about that. It could be an everyday possibility."

Snoop Dogg Explains the 'Hizzistory of Bizzasketball' to Jimmy Kimmel Viewers (Video) (thewrap.com; Emery)

Basketball can be a complicated game, especially if you don’t know the sports’ backstory.

But don’t stress, Snoop Dogg and Jimmy Kimmel are here to tell you everything you need to know about the “hizzistory of bizzasketball.”

After the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Golden State Warriors in Game 3 of the NBA Finals Wednesday night, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” posted an easy-to-follow video in which Snoop went way, way back into the archives.

“This is before black men were allowed to play basketball,” the hip-hop star explained, while showing grainy footage of awkward-looking white players. “There is no jumping, no dunking, no heroics … it’s just basic basketball. But this was in 1954 and that’s probably before most black people had TVs, so we weren’t trippin.”

Snoop correctly predicted that the old time player would shoot free throws “granny style,” and it was embarrassing to watch.

“That was the NBA Finals 1954, Syracuse v Minneapolis … who won, who cares?” he concluded.
