Welcome to Native American Day!

In South Dakota people celebrate Native Americans' Day through learning from educational resources that focus on the traditions, culture and background of Native Americans. It is a day to celebrate the heritage of Native Americans and for both native and non-native cultures to unite so the many aspects of native culture can be shared.

In Berkeley, California, some organizations, community groups and churches support the day through awareness-raising activities about the history, culture and traditions of indigenous peoples of the United States. Cultural activities such as markets and pow wows, which are gatherings of North America's indigenous people, are held. In modern times, pow wows involve dancing, singing, socializing and celebrating Native American culture.

Kentucky, North Carolina, Memphis are most overrated college basketball programs
(PS; Carlson)

It all started with trying to figure out if Syracuse was the most underrated program annually in the country.

In an effort to find a scientific way to prove or disprove that idea, I created a mathmatical formula and used it to generate a list of the most overrated and underrated programs in the country.

Surprisingly, at least at first glance, there were a number of powerhouse programs that were also among the most overrated. Leading the way was Kentucky, a program most in the country would swap places with.

So, let me explain my methodology here. In an effort to determine which teams over-performed and under-performed expectations, I decided I needed polls that included both preseason expectations and postseason results.

This meant using the USA Today Coaches Poll, the only poll that is taken after the NCAA Tournament has concluded. While that means this isn't exactly "media expectations," the coaches poll usually matches the media fairly closely.

I measured the difference between preseason and postseason ranking for the past 10 years, including the also receiving votes category in the rankings. If a team didn't receive votes, I assigned the team the next available spot. This is imperfect, but I couldn't find a way around it. Then I totaled all the numbers up.

For instance, Duke was picked No. 4 during the preseason and finished No. 18. That gave them -14 points for last year.

Melo Has Found His Voice as a Superstar Activist. What Now? (BR; Anderson)

He walked through the dusty streets and narrow alleyways of the Santa Marta favela in Rio de Janeiro, the young and the old pointing at the tall American basketball player strolling through their slum. From afar, he looked perfectly at ease, a man at home, but up close his eyes were on fire with intensity, as if on alert. He had seen this before, every day, but he was starting to see things clearly now, all over again, the way he only used to see the bottom of a net.

Nearly 8,000 people live on this steep hillside where concrete and wooden shanties are stacked on top of each other like toy building blocks. Some of the homes are without electricity, but that didn’t stop word from spreading that Carmelo Anthony was in the neighborhood.

On August 15—two days before Team USA played Argentina in the quarterfinals of the Olympic men’s basketball tournament—Anthony left his plush room on the private cruise ship where the team was staying and traveled to Santa Marta, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Rio. The police presence was minimal. With no security guards protecting him, he strode through the favela, where young men openly smoked marijuana and discreetly dealt cocaine. Anthony knows this world well: He grew up in a small townhouse on the west edge of Baltimore across from a public housing development known as “Murder Homes.’’

Benny Mardones to play Christmas concert at Turning Stone Resort Casino (PS; Tulloch)

Longtime pop singer Benny Mardones will play a concert of Christmas hits at Turning Stone Resort Casino on Friday, Dec. 2.

Now 69, Mardones has been performing for nearly 40 years. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2001 and takes pills that can temporarily still his shaking hands.

Last October, he put on a sold-out show with Eddie Money at the Palace Theatre. The crowd rose to give him a standing ovation over and over throughout the night.

I'm still Benny Mardones and I can still sing lead with the Hurricanes.
A year ago, Mardones said he couldn't imagine a life off the stage. This December, he will return to the stage for a 90-minute show at the casino's main showroom. He will be 70 by then.

"I keep hoping for a cure," said Mardones, in an interview with syracuse.com. "But in the meantime, I might shake a little bit, fall once in a while, but other than that I'm still Benny Mardones and I can still sing lead with the Hurricanes."

Benny Mardones at Turning Stone
Where: Turning Stone Resort Casino at 5218 Patrick Rd., Verona.
When: Friday, Dec. 2 from 8 to 9:30 p.m.

So what exactly is an academic redshirt? I don't really want to read the article, hopefully someone else has and can explain and then explain how that was never an option with Diagne or any of our important football recruits.
