Sean Miller meets with five-star guard Hamidou Diallo (azdesertswarm.com; Sills-Trausch)

There are few players in the nation who are better than Hamidou Diallo.

To be exact, there are only nine of them according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings, which place him at No. 10 overall and tops among all shooting guards.

At 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds, Diallo is in a class of his own in the open court, exciting crowds with mammoth dunks and the ability to put defenders on skates with shifty ball handling skills.

At Putnam Science Academy last year, Diallo helped lead his team to a 37-4 record and a berth in the Final Four. He averaged nearly 17 points, five rebounds, and two assists a game. While he’ll need to work on his outside range, his attacking style garners him many attempts from the free throw line. In those 41 games, he shot 221 free throws – an average of over five per game.

His coach at PSA, Thomas Espinosa, explained to me what makes Diallo so great.

“His best basketball is in the open floor,” Espinosa said. “He really gets up and down. He’s special when the game is up and down and is such a tremendous athlete.”

Brooklyn Nets Roster & Projected Lineup 2016-17 (heavy.com; Johnson)

Bench

G: Sean Kilpatrick (13.8 ppg, 2.2 rpg) Kilpatrick played in just 23 games last season, but he made the most of the opportunities presented to him. Kilpatrick’s scoring output came in just over 23 minutes of action per game, and he has the potential to once again be a quality bench scoring option for the Nets.

G: Greivis Vasquez (5.7 ppg, 4.0 apg) Vasquez spent last season with the Bucks, where he played in just 20 games due to a right ankle injury. Vasquez had the ankle operated on, and he sat out the Olympics with Venezuela in order to ensure that he would be at full strength for the NBA season. He’ll be the backup point guard in Brooklyn, possessing the savvy and competitiveness needed to run a team.

G/F: Caris LeVert (Rookie) LeVert is a skilled player on the wing, and he’s a guy who can be a key figure in the Nets’ rebuilding efforts. But it should be noted that he struggled with foot injuries while in college (Michigan), playing a total of 33 games in his last two seasons in Ann Arbor. Look for the Nets to exercise some caution early when it comes to LeVert’s minutes.

G/F: Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (5.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg) Hollis-Jefferson didn’t have much of an offensive impact in his first season in the NBA, but his greatest strengths right now are most evident on the defensive end. At 6-foot-7 Hollis-Jefferson has the size and athleticism to defend multiple positions for the Nets. The next step is to become a more consistent player on offense, as he shot 45.7 percent from the field as a rookie.

F: Trevor Booker (5.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg) Booker is another of the Nets’ free agent acquisitions, spending his last two NBA seasons as a reserve in Utah. The rugged four man out of Clemson will serve in a similar role with the Nets, with his abilities to rebound and defend (102 defensive rating last season) being of particular interest.

F: Chris McCullough (4.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg) Missing most of his lone season at Syracuse due to a torn ACL, McCullough played in just 24 games last year as a rookie with the Nets as the franchise exercised some caution in his recovery. At 6-foot-10 McCullough has the height and athleticism needed to cause some matchup difficulties on offense, but there’s still the need for him to get stronger in the post.

C: Justin Hamilton (14.2 ppg, 5.4 rpg) The 7-footer spent last season with Valencia Basket in the Spanish ACB, which is regarded by many as the second-best professional league in the world behind the NBA. Hamilton, who agreed to a two-year deal with the Nets this summer, does have NBA experience as he played the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons in the league before heading to Spain.

CNY apple picking 2016: Where to go, what to expect (photo gallery; PS; Cazentre)

From Jonamacs and Gingergolds to MacIntosh and Honeycrisp, it's apple season Central New York.

Many stands or U pick orchards will be open by this weekend. But the weather this year -- from a late spring frost to a prolonged summer drought -- did reduce the crop in some cases and will result in smaller but sweeter apples across the state. Some orchards are limiting or even eliminating U pick this year.

Status report on the 2016 Upstate NY apple season
Still, the fall apple picking season remains one of Central New York's treasures. It means cider and apple fritters, hayrides and corn mazes and other fall activities at some of the larger farms. Its all capped off by the annual LaFayette Apple Festival, to be held this year Oct. 8 and 9.

Here's our guide to the 2016 apple season. It's always best to call ahead, especially this year with some orchards offering limited U pick options. (TBD means hours will be set later; NA means Not Available).
