Welcome to Squid and Cuttlefish Day!

Greetings Blogophiles! Welcome to day three of Cephalopod Awareness Days. Today, October 10th, is the day we celebrate the cephalopods with ten appendages; squid and cuttlefish. Woo Hoo! Finally a subject I actually do research on. Because of that, I celebrate squid and cuttlefish almost daily. But rather than rehash the year and a half my colleagues and I spent monkeying about with chitin in Eocene cuttlebones or the big Cretaceous squid project. Today I’ll focus on calamari. Oh wait…that’s dinner; back to blogging.

So, squid and cuttlefish; most people are aware of squid. They show up in our lives as calamari (yes, I am hungry) or as bait. If you happen to be training to become a neurosurgeon you would practice your skills on squid axons because they are much thicker than axons in the human brain, yet they are morphologically and functionally similar. Squid axons are also being used to study the role environmental toxins may play in Parkinson’s disease.

Who should start for Syracuse Basketball? | isportsweb (isportsweb.com; Godnick)

When the rich get richer, decisions become tougher; the Syracuse Orange are faced with this “good” problem. The Orange are lucky to be bringing back four impact players, but they are even luckier to have a roster full of new impactful additions. This team can most certainty go nine deep, and their depth imposes a “problem” in regards to who will make the starting lineup come Nov. 11.

The starting five doesn’t matter as much as who finishes the game, but it is important to set the tone early with a dominate starting unit. The Orange have endless possibilities for who could start verse Colgate, but no matter who they decide, the Orange will have a diverse lineup with multiple threats.

Award predictions for the Syracuse Orange | isportsweb (isportsweb.com; Godnick)

This is supposed to be a season of promise for the Orange; a season complete with a team full of weapons finally ready to return to the promise land. This roster has quick, athletic guards who bring a scoring mentality, and also showcases versatile big men with a defensive mindset and drive to win. This is sure to be a fun season which will hopefully lead to another Final Four appearance and hopefully bring a few awards too. This roster isn’t bound to rack up endless national awards, but it’s the team honors that matter most.

MVP: Tyler Lydon

It’s your team kid—it’s up to you on what you want to do with it. Lydon is poised to have the year of a lifetime and it would be pretty hard to mess it up—that’s why he won’t. The guards are perfect this year in terms of pick and role opportunities for Lydon. Lydon will have the option to roll to the basket or pop out for a three, and with the quickness in the backcourt, the defender will have no choice but to leave one of them open. Lydon will also be the focal point of the offense, and despite increased responsibilities, his supporting cast is sure to make life easier for him.

Defensive Player of the Year: Tyler Roberson

This is the most important award by far. As corny as it sounds, you truly don’t win championships without defense. Yes, this team can score with the best of them, but when they face the real talent, offense won’t get the job done. Whether Roberson starts or not, he will be the biggest impact in Boeheim’s famous zone. His rebounding is for sure his best skill, but his awareness and passion for getting stops is what makes him so special. Roberson is athletic and has the strength to defend players bigger than him, and for the Orange to be special, Roberson needs to be that anchor.

Freshman of the Year: Tyus Battle

Restored historic Syracuse hotel bringing back New Year's Eve tradition (PS; Moriarty)

New Year's Eve parties were big deals at the Hotel Syracuse for decades until the historic venue closed in 2004. But now that the hotel has reopened as the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, it will be party time again this New Year's Eve.

There will be live music in its restored lobby and in each of the ballrooms, casino gaming tables, photos booths, horse and carriage rides. At midnight, guests will enjoy a champagne toast and a balloon drop in each ballroom.

The event, which will include dinner in all three ballrooms, will start at 7:30 p.m. and end at 12:30 a.m. Guests are required to be 21 years of age or older.
