Welcome to Geographic Information Systems Day!

GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.

The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day. He considered GIS Day a good initiative for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate.

Instant Juice: Syracuse 90, Holy Cross 46 - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

A quick take on Syracuse’s 90-46 win over Holy Cross in the first game of the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational on Tuesday evening:

WHAT HAPPENED: Syracuse stifled Holy Cross defensively in the first half, holding the Crusaders to just one basket from 9:53 until 5:34. By that point, Syracuse had jumped out to a 36-17 lead, and the Orange cruised to its second straight win to start the season.

ANALYSIS: One game after Jim Boeheim lamented his team’s effort on the glass, his group gave a more spirited effort, with a +12 margin on the boards. Everything was firing on all cylinders, as the Orange shot 57.9 percent from the field and 13-25 from beyond the arc. Syracuse also held Holy Cross to 30.9 percent shooting from the field and forced 14 turnovers. For the second game, Boeheim played all nine available scholarship players in his rotation, though it appears that Dajuan Coleman (1 point, 6 rebounds) will be used sparingly.

HERO: Tyler Lydon, who scored just two points in the opener against Colgate, finished second on the team with 17 points to go with six rebounds. Lydon did it from outside and out, and went 2-3 from downtown after misfiring on all of his attempts in the Colgate opener, as well as the two preseason games. Andrew White led all scorers with 19 points, canning 5 of his 10 shots from 3-point land.

Orange Teams Are Still Works In Progress - Syracuse New Times (syracusenewtimes.cmo; Michael)

Within about 21 hours this past weekend at the Carrier Dome, we caught a glimpse of the wide gap that currently exists between Syracuse University’s football and men’s basketball teams.

Under first-year coach Dino Babers, the football team is very much a work in progress, and on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 12, the Orange couldn’t overcome the loss of its best player (quarterback Eric Dungey), a controversial chop block penalty, and the inability of its defense to stop North Carolina State on third down. A mediocre Wolfpack team (5-5, 2-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) defeated the Orange 35-20, making it unlikely that the Orange (4-6, 2-4) will play in a bowl game.

“We have to take our lumps right now,” Babers said. “Big brother’s punching little brother in the chest and telling him not to cry. We’re going to take it right now, but there’s going to be a time when our babies grow up and I look forward to that day.”

Under 41st-year coach Jim Boeheim, the basketball team is also a work in progress, but in a much different way. In its season opener Friday night, Nov. 11, the Orange could overcome a dismal game by its best player (Tyler Lydon), a shoddy effort on the boards, and a porous press defense because it has the talent to return to the Final Four for a second consecutive season. Syracuse thumped undermanned Colgate 83-55, extending its winning streak over to the Raiders to 51 — the longest current winning streak in Division I.

“We had a good stretch (offensively) in the middle and at the start of the second half, but at the end they went zone and it was like we had never seen a zone; we weren’t very good at the end there,” Boeheim said. “But overall, it’s the first time, the first game, we’re happy to get it, and we’ll get back to work tomorrow and try to get a little better.”

BC basketball team snaps 20-game losing streak - The Boston Globe (bostonglobe.com; AP)

Boston College snapped a 20-game losing streak on Tuesday night, getting 16 points from Jerome Robinson and 13 rebounds from Mo Jeffers to beat Maryland-Eastern Shore, 73-57, at Conte Forum.

The Eagles (1-1) had not won since Dec. 30, 2015.

Bakari Copeland scored 14 points for the Hawks (0-3).

The Eagles lost 19 games to end the 2015-16 season — the entire Atlantic Coast Conference schedule and then one more game in the league tournament. They opened this season with a loss to Nicholls State on Friday night.

CNY forecast getting clearer: Several inches of snow possible early next week (PS; Coin)

Get ready for the first real snowfall of the season, which could even come during the Monday morning commute.

As the picture gets clearer, forecasters are now saying Central New York could get several inches of snow starting Sunday and continuing all the way into Tuesday.

"Sunday night and Monday there could be some accumulating snow, and Tuesday may not be much better," said Ted Champney, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Binghamton. "The Monday morning commute could be interesting."

The snow could come from three different directions. A storm system and cold front moving in from the Upper Midwest will bring the first chance for snow. A low pressure system could develop over New England, and another round of snow could wrap around that. To polish it all off, lake effect snow could kick in by Tuesday, although that's likely to be very light, Champney said.

It's too early to be specific about how much snow will fall, but there's little doubt it will suddenly feel like winter. Highs on Friday in Central New York could be in the 60s, but after the cold front descends by Sunday, highs will be only in the high 30s.
