Welcome to Blackout Wednesday!

Blackout Wednesday (or "Black Wednesday," "Drinksgiving," or "Thanksgiving Eve") is a pejorative term for the night before the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, which is always a Thursday. It is associated with binge drinking since very few people work on Thanksgiving, and most university students are home to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with their families.[1] The name refers to "blacking out", memory loss due to excessive alcohol intoxication. In Chicago in particular, Blackout Wednesday is sometimes a more popular partying night than even New Year's Eve or Saint Patrick's Day.[1] In some cities, it is the top drunk driving night of the year.[2]

Three takeaways from SU’s win over SC State (TNIAAM; Godnick)

The Syracuse Orange took care of business in style with a 101-59 win over the South Carolina State Bulldogs. Tyler Lydon came back to life with a stellar performance, finishing with 14 and 10 rebounds. It was an all-around win, dominating on both ends of the ball and obtaining contributions from an array of individuals.

Offensive glass is the difference maker for the Orange

Don’t give this team more than one chance, it’s that easy. The amount of shooters and scorers on the roster this year is unprecedented, and stopping them on one possession is an impressive feat itself—stopping them twice? That’s hard to imagine.

The Orange made themselves known on the offensive boards against the Bulldogs, finishing with 14 total. Anytime the Orange can get an extra chance to score, the opposing team cringes at the possibilities. The orange will terrorize teams this year with their complete scoring arsenal, so a tip to their opposition: rebound the ball, it’s your only shot.

John Gillon is the leader of this second unit

The Orange are full of experience, from their two graduate transfers to their four impact returners from last year’s historic run, this year’s roster has plenty of people to turn to when it matters most. The first unit is covered when it comes to leaders, but the second unit, containing all new players on the team, have found their commander: John Gillon.

The graduate transfer brings balance and control to the second unit, something they need due to their youth and inability to read collegiate defenses. Gillon has seen it all, and from the looks of it, he’s been seeing it better than ever in the Orange jersey. When things seem to be nearing failure, Gillon demands the ball and makes sure Boeheim has nothing to yell about—or at least, not as much as usual.

Syracuse 101 - South Carolina State 59: Balanced attack leads Orange (TNIAAM; Szuba)

The Syracuse Orange (3-0) hosted the South Carolina State Bulldogs (1-2) tonight at the Carrier Dome as part of the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitation. While SCSU took a quick 3-0 lead, the Orange quickly responded with a 15-0 run and never looked back in the game, eventually winning 101-59.

Just three minutes into the game, Jim Boeheim brought Paschal Chukwu and Tyus Battle off the bench to work on the press. The full-court defense sped the game up, but proved relatively ineffective as South Carolina State was able to break the pressure with ease, generating open looks on the other end.

Offensively Syracuse didn’t have trouble putting up points as all nine players in orange scored in the first half. John Gillon led the way with 10 points in the first 20 minutes and helped give Syracuse a 46-31 lead at the break.

Boeheim elected to ditch the press entirely in the second half and reverted to playing 2-3 zone in the half-court. Tyler Lydon was able to find rhythm from outside tonight as he knocked down four threes in only five attempts.

Syracuse had six(!) players in double-figures. Three Orange players had double-doubles as Lydon and Tyler Roberson had double-digit points and rebounds while Frank Howard had 10 points and 10 assists. 12 Syracuse players scored in the game.

With the win Syracuse moves to 4-0 on the season. The Orange will play South Carolina in Brooklyn on Saturday. That game will tip at 2:30 pm at Barclays.

Syracuse basketball overwhelms South Carolina State - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Tuesday night, #18 Syracuse overwhelmed South Carolina State with a balanced attack, coming out in waves and claiming a 101-59 victory at the Carrier Dome. Nine players saw time in the first half and all of them scored in that time for the Orange (4-0), then eight of them did the same in the second half before ceding the court to their walk-on teammates.

The Bulldogs (1-3) were completely overmatched, as SU cracked the 100-point mark for the first time in five seasons. The Orange held a 54-32 rebounding advantage and piled up 25 assists. SU also more than doubled SCSU in field goal percentage, connecting on 54.4 percent of their attempts compared to a 27.1 percent success rate for the guests.

After the Bulldogs got a heaved three to beat the shot clock after winning the tip, Syracuse quickly restored order by scoring the game’s next 15 points.

Tyler Lydon opened the scoring with a left wing three, then Andrew White III matched him from the right wing to give the Orange the lead. Tyler Roberson hit a pair at the line, then Frank Howard went coast-to-coast for a lay-up and added a straightaway three. Following the first television timeout, John Gillon added a pair of free throws to make it 15-3 in SU’s favor just under six minutes into the game.

SCSU did not go quietly into the night, grinding out the next six points while holding the Orange without a score for a stretch of nearly four minutes.

With SU later holding a six-point lead, they delivered another run, this one a 13-2 advantage, to take a commanding lead. DaJuan Coleman started it with five straight points, including a smooth spin move on the left block. John Gillon added a high-arcing floater, then a long three-pointer after a Bulldog bucket. Tyus Battle then added a three of his own for a 31-14 Syracuse lead.

No. 18 Syracuse holds SC State to 27 percent in 101-59 rout | Reading Eagle - AP (readingeagle.com; AP)

Andrew White scored 15 points and No. 18 Syracuse held South Carolina State to 27 percent shooting in a 101-59 victory Tuesday night.

Tyler Lydon had 14 points and 10 rebounds, one of three players who finished with a double-double for the Orange (4-0). He was 4 of 5 from 3-point range.

Frank Howard had 10 points, 11 assists and only one turnover. Tyler Roberson had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Six players scored in double figures for Syracuse, and five hit at least one 3. John Gillon scored 14 points and Taurean Thompson tied his career high with 12.

Thompson and Paschal Chukwu each had four of Syracuse's 11 blocks.

Ozante Fields led the Bulldogs (1-3) with 11 points, and James Richardson added nine.

Orange Teams Take The Fifth - Syracuse New Times (newtimes.com; Michael)

The fifth-year transfer rule may be one of the most controversial topics in college sports, but you’ll get no argument about it around here.

The NCAA rule allows college athletes to play immediately at another school if they have graduated from their previous institution and have not used all of their athletic eligibility. Under normal transfer rules, the transferring athletes would have to sit out one year.

Fifth-year transfer wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo made this season worth watching for the Syracuse University football team, while fifth-year transfer wing player Andrew White III may be the difference between a very good Orange basketball team and a great one.

Entering the Nov. 22 game against South Carolina State at the Carrier Dome, White led the 18th-ranked Orange in scoring at 18 points per game and has hit the team’s biggest shots. Despite being the focus of the opponents’ defenses, Etta-Tawo is among the national leaders in receptions (81) and receiving yards (1,304) and he was named one of the 10 semifinalists for the 2016 Biletnikoff Award presented to the country’s best receiver.

“I think it’s very humbling on my part that he had enough faith in this program and my coaches along with the players on this football team to take that journey and make that leap of faith,” SU coach Dino Babers said of Etta-Tawo. “I’m proud of the stuff that he’s done.”

Critics of the fifth-year transfer rule say it’s a loophole that has created a college free agency, allowing the rich to get richer. But those who defend the rule say it’s working the way it was designed: as a reward for athletes who have earned their degree and want to pursue a graduate degree elsewhere.

The 6-foot-7 White, who starts at shooting guard but can also play small forward, played at Kansas for two years before transferring to Nebraska, where he averaged 16.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last season. He graduated from Nebraska in the spring and entered the NBA draft, but then withdrew from the draft prior to the deadline to retain his college eligibility.
