Orange Nation interview: Mike Hopkins 11-28-16 (localsyr.com)
The Syracuse University men’s basketball team suffered its first loss on Saturday, and now the Orange will look to bounce back at Wisconsin.
Syracuse University assistant coach Mike Hopkins was on Orange Nation on Monday when he discussed the loss to the Gamecocks, and the lessons the team must learn going forward.
SU will tip off against the Badgers at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Madison.
The game – part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge – will be on ESPN.

ACC 1 B1G 1
The ACC-Big Ten Challenge is back for the 18th time with two of the premier conferences in college basketball battling for supremacy over a 14-game slate. The Big Ten is trying for its third straight victory, while the ACC will look to improve its 10–5–2 record since the event began in 1999.
The ACC won the challenge for the first 10 years of its existence, but hasn’t won outright since 2008. The event runs from Monday through Wednesday and every game will be televised on the ESPN family of networks.
The ACC and Big Ten have each been off to strong starts in the early portion of the season, with the ACC entering the challenge at 73-16 and the Big Ten at 67-21.
Duke has the most wins in challenge history with 15. The Blue Devils will have a marquee matchup against a struggling Michigan State team on the second night of the event. Duke will again be without top freshmen Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum and Marques Bolden, who are all out with injury.

Syracuse Basketball: Latest Bracketology opens up favorable path (TNIAAM; Szuba)
Usually we don’t put too much stock into the highly venerable ‘Bracketology’ until mid-February, but in its first two editions, Joey Brackets had Syracuse matched up with two opponents it has already played. That’s a big no-no for the selection committee — the chances of that happening are actually zero percent.
In his latest revision, Lunardi has Syracuse as a No. 4 seed in the east region. Mind you, this was before Syracuse’s loss to South Carolina on Saturday. Nonetheless, the East Region in its current form represents the most advantageous path for Syracuse. First and foremost, the Orange would be playing in Buffalo in the round of 64 and 32 and if it advanced the regional would be held at MSG. Secondly, Syracuse has some favorable matchups.
Valpo - First Round
Make no mistake, Valparaiso is a good team. It has one of the best players in the country in Alec Peters. He almost jumped to the NBA before returning to Valparaiso for his final year of eligibility and is currently averaging 25.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Shane Hammink is a nice second option, but if Syracuse shuts down Peters it would have no trouble advancing in what would assuredly be a home game crowd.
West Virginia - Round of 32
Okay, no favors in the second round this year. While Syracuse struggled against South Carolina’s pressure in the half-court Saturday, I actually like the idea of Syracuse getting pressed. Give me John Gillon and Frank Howard to break the full-court pressure with Andrew White and Tyler Lydon at forwards to pass over the defense. Can you say lobs at the rim? Jim Boeheim is also 22-6 all-time against West Virginia. Granted, Huggins wasn’t coaching for most of those wins but I like Syracuse in this matchup.

Rakeem Christmas posterized on Wayne Selden dunk, responds on Twitter (PS; Carlson)
Former Syracuse center Rakeem Christmas went viral on Sunday night. He certainly wishes he didn't.
Christmas was the victim of a tremendous posterization by former Kansas star Wayne Selden during a D-League game.
To be fair, Christmas' defense on the play wasn't terrible. Selden's dunk attempt was simply tremendous, even prompting a squeak from the broadcasters.

Christmas, known at SU for his solid play and laid-back personality, responded to the moment on Twitter with good humor, a Kanye West GIF and some back-and-forth banter with Malachi Richardson.
After all, Selden was only getting Christmas back for his strong finish over former Michigan State standout Matt Costello earlier in the game.

Artist who created iconic train statues: Scarves aren't part of the artwork (Video) (PS; Hannagan)
Probably nobody in Syracuse has more of a vested interest in the state's $1.5 million restoration of the old New York Central Railroad freight platform than Lawrence "Duke" Epolito.
In 1982, Epolito and a friend Lawrence " Larry" Zankowski installed "Waiting for the Night Train," a series of spectral figures waiting for a train that never comes. They didn't have permission from the platform's owners to install the figures.
Epolito has called the the sculpture "a kind of graffiti" and "commuter art." It is his gift to the people of Syracuse. The white figures have become a landmark for Syracuse residents. The state Department of Transportation estimates that 127,000 vehicles a day on Interstate 690 pass by the old train platform where the figures are located.
The restoration of the platform is "symbolic of the rebirth of Syracuse and Central New York," said state Sen. David Valesky, at a press conference celebrating the restoration.
The figures were prominently displayed during the news conference. They were removed afterward and will be returned once a protective fence meant to keep the public off the platform is completed.
The artist said Monday that he's happy that the state has returned his sculptures back to the platform. They're like his children, Epolito said.
Part of the restoration project includes a wrought iron fence with sharp pickets on it to prevent people from coming up onto the platform so close to a busy interstate and vandalizing or stealing the art work.
