Welcome to National Rubber Ducky Day!

Today is National Rubber Ducky Day! In 1970, Jim Henson performed the song “Rubber Duckie” as Ernie on Sesame Street, and the rubber duck bath toy has been an iconic American symbol ever since. Rubber ducks have been around since the rise of the rubber industry in the late 1800s, but no one knows their exact origin.

Did you know that in January of 1992, a shipment of 29,000 rubber duckies fell off a cargo ship in the Pacific Ocean? By 2007, the “Friendly Floatees” had traveled 17,000 miles around the world on the ocean currents. Some are still afloat today!Over time, people reported seeing the duckies in places such as Australia, Indonesia, South America, the Bering Strait, the Arctic, and in the Atlantic Ocean!

Happy Rubber Ducky Day!

Boston College Basketball: The Hype is Real (bcinterruption.com; BCIHoff)

The script is starting to change on the fly for this BC hoops team. After beating Providence in December the story was that the Friars are in rebuild mode and had their mind on Christmas break. After beating Syracuse the narrative was that ‘the Orange were a dumpster fire and are one of the worst teams in the ACC (since then ‘Cuse has defeated Miami and Pitt). Now after beating a squad that granted is coached by a guy who would probably find a way to lose with the 1992 Dream Team, BUT has two projected NBA first round picks on it, the Eagles are starting to get some real national praise.

CBS’s Doug Gottlieb was calling for BC coach Jim Christian to get national recognition

Meanwhile, Scott Spinelli’s "best friend" Jeff Goodman was singing praise for the dynamic BC backcourt

Jerome Robinson and Ky Bowman. Love this young BC backcourt.

— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) January 12, 2017

This BC team might have lost to Nicholls State, Hartford and Fairfield this year, but I’m only hanging one of those losses on the team when I evaluate where the program stands right now. The truth of the matter is that since the light went on for Ky Bowman in New York City against Auburn this is a drastically different team, and dare I say a team that has the look of a NIT team since that time.

Boston College defeats NC State 74-66; Syracuse up next for Eagles (PS; AP)

Boston College guard Jerome Robinson said the Eagles are enjoying playing with each other so far this season.

They certainly have a good reason after completely wiping away the misery of last season's winless Atlantic Coast Conference schedule with two early wins.

Robinson scored 24 points, Ky Bowman added 19 and BC beat North Carolina State 74-66 on Wednesday night.

"You can kind of tell when we're out there," Robinson said. "We're moving the ball and know what each other's going to do. It's definitely a good feeling. I really feel like we're really connected right now."

Connar Tava added 13 points and A. J. Turner 10 for the Eagles (9-8, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). A year ago BC went 0-18 during the regular season and lost its only conference tourney game.

"Sometimes you have to grind one out and you've got to win at home," BC coach Jim Christian said. "That's what I told our team."

Dennis Smith Jr. led the Wolfpack (12-5, 1-3) with 15 points. Terry Henderson had 14.

N.C. State has lost three of four.

"We're going to keep getting better," N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said. "The difference tonight was turnovers - 17 turnovers is too many. Other than that I was pleased."

BC hit its ceiling in first matchup against Syracuse (TNIAAM; Sigel)

Heading into this season, losing to the Boston College Eagles would’ve been the punchline of a sick joke.

Some people were projecting a Final Four run before the Syracuse Orange even hit the court for its first practice of the season. Some said it’s Elite Eight or bust and others laughed at the thought that the Orange wouldn’t be an NCAA Tournament team.

Well, on January 1, Syracuse fans realized what it felt like to be at the bottom of the league. Boston College, coming off of an 0-18 season in the ACC, beat the Orange by 15 points and nothing seemed right.

If Syracuse didn’t lose by 33 points earlier in the season to St. John’s in the Carrier Dome, I’d say it’s the worst loss I’ve seen since covering SU — but sadly, it wasn’t.

Syracuse Basketball: 2017 Three-Star Guard Visits SU; Offer Coming? (insidetheloudhouse; Adler)

New recruiting information suggests that the Syracuse basketball team could be in position to offer to an intriguing talent visiting Central New York.

It’s no secret that the Syracuse basketball squad desperately needs a point guard to help fill out its 2017 class.

With graduate transfer John Gillon exhausting his eligibility after this season, that leaves sophomore Frank Howard as the lone lead guard entering the 2017-18 campaign.

Freshman Tyus Battle, assuming he stays on the roster, can help run the offense, but he isn’t a pure point guard.

It’s been widely documented at this juncture, the Orange swung and missed on five-star prospect Quade Green, who chose Kentucky over the ‘Cuse. Putting so much time and energy into Green led head coach Jim Boeheim and his staff to shy away from other top-flight targets at the point-guard position.

Now, a report has surfaced on At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. that three-star recruit Chris Duarte visited the Syracuse campus last weekend, and he got to watch the Orange crush the Pittsburgh Panthers this past Saturday. That’s a good thing, considering how SU has struggled for the better part of this winter.

Per At their request, this network is being blocked from this site., Duarte, whose recruitment has gotten slightly hampered as he battles back from injury, is interested in Syracuse. And the feeling by the ‘Cuse appears mutual.

“Syracuse is a high major program and Duarte a talented recruit at a position of need,” according to the report. “No (scholarship) offer has been extended as of yet, but keep an eye on Duarte moving forward.”

Interestingly, on various recruiting Web sites, he’s listed as a point guard, a shooting guard and a small forward.

The 6-5 Duarte attends Redemption Christian Academy in Troy, N.Y., which is near Albany.

Syracuse Winterfest chili and chowder cook-offs to return for 2017 (PS; Cazentre)

The chili and chowder cook-offs, two of the signature events of the annual Syracuse Winterfest, will return this year after a change in the health permit process cancelled them in 2016.

Winterfest director Bill Cooper said he's hoping to stage the Chili Cook-off on Feb. 25 and the Chowder Cook-off on Feb. 26, the second weekend of the 11-day fest.

Applications from restaurants or private groups interested in participating are now being accepted.

Cooper is considering moving the outdoor cook-offs, in which teams compete to be named the best by both judges and fest-goers, to Clinton Square instead of their traditional home in Hanover Square.

In 2016, Cooper cancelled the events after issues arose over Onondaga County Health Department permits. In previous years, the Winterfest itself obtained one permit that covered all the cook-off participants. The county health department, however, changed the process in the past few years, requiring each vendor or participant to get its own separate permit. That change affected all similar events with multiple food vendors, from the Taste of Syracuse to the Syracuse Irish Fest.
