Syracuse Orange: Carmelo Anthony creates new big 3 in OKC (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Well former Syracuse Orange star Carmelo Anthony got his wish and was traded, but not to who we were expecting. ITLH breaks down the new super team.

We talked about it on ITLH on Friday that a deal was in the works to get Carmelo Anthony on a new team before training camp began. We thought the former Syracuse Orange star would be heading to Houston, like everyone else, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Apparently with the pressure increasing and the likelihood increasing of Melo reporting to an awkward training camp and another awkward season with the New York Knicks, it made Melo flinch. Throughout the entire offseason Melo has said Houston or nothing.

He flirted a few times with a potential Cleveland move, but that was unrealistic considering salaries. Speaking of unrealistic, that’s really why Melo truly couldn’t get what he wanted, forming a big three in Houston, pairing with Chris Paul and James Harden.

Instead he’ll have to settle with a big three in Oklahoma City, not too shabby. What a 24 months for OKC. They see their greatest player in franchise history jettison through free agency and leave the franchise in Kevin Durant.

Orange In NBA Camps (cuse.com)

There are 13 former Syracuse players, including 2017 first-round draft choice Tyler Lydon, who are participating in NBA training camps that open this week.

The Syracuse program has had players selected in the NBA Draft's first round in six consecutive years, a total surpassed by only Kentucky (eight straight years) and Duke (seven years).

Headlining the list of former Orange performers in training camp is Carmelo Anthony, who was just traded from the New York Knicks to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Anthony joins former 'Cuse standout Jerami Grant with the Thunder, as well as NBA stars Paul George and Russell Westbrook. The other Syracuse product in the NBA's Northwest Division is Lydon, who is with the Denver Nuggets.

Dion Waiters, who is coming off one of his better professional seasons, returns to the Miami Heat. Another guard, Tyler Ennis, re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers after finishing the last season there. Chris McCullough was traded from Brooklyn to Washington during the 2016-17 campaign and now enters his first training camp with the Wizards.

After a few years honing his skills overseas, guard Andy Rautins earned a training camp invitation from the Toronto Raptors. He had a previous stint in the league with the Knicks. Andrew White was Syracuse's top scorer a year ago and his offseason performance in the NBA Summer League earned him a spot in the Boston Celtics' camp.

Other Syracuse players who are with new NBA clubs include Michael Carter-Williams (Charlotte Hornets), Michael Gbinije (Golden State Warriors) and James Southerland (Golden State Warriors). In addition to having Gbinije and Southerland, the NBA's Pacific Division also includes Wesley Johnson (Los Angeles Clippers) and Malachi Richardson (Sacramento Kings).

The NBA regular season begins October 17.

ACC basketball: Predictions for the 2017-18 season (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

We ranked the ACC teams heading into the 2017-18 college basketball season.

There might not have been as much hype surrounding a conference in recent memories as the Atlantic Coast Conference last preseason. The league already was strong with Duke and North Carolina leading the way, but recent additions from the Big East only strengthened it.

13. Syracuse Orange
2016-2017 result: 19-15 (10-8) – No. 1 seed in the NIT, lost in first round
They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but Jim Boeheim tried out something new by getting a couple of grad transfers in Andrew White from Nebraska and John Gillion from Colorado State. A couple of high scoring guards to fill out the roster to pair up with NBA prospect Tyler Lydon and highly touted Tyus Battle.

Except something just didn’t look right all season. It might be that the 2-3 zone defense is something players need to be recruited in from high school and not in a grad transfer situation.
After flirting with the bubble, the Orange didn’t make the tournament and forgot they were supposed to show up in the NIT.

With Lydon gone to the pros and only South Florida grad transfer Geno Thrope coming in when it comes to transfers, the roster is still filled with questions. While Taurean Thompson and Tyus Battle are expected to have good sophomore campaigns, the issue of scoring remains for the team in general.

A player to keep an eye on is a Slovakian big named Marek Dolezaj. He’s a stretch forward with a chance to play a major role in the coming years in the program.

Syracuse has some good young players and can look forward to the future, with Boeheim’s own son Buddy coming in next year. But this team got younger, and not much deeper. And in a league for of experience and depth, the Orange will have a setback this year.

A new NCAA rule that could kill media days in college basketball needs to be fixed (cbssports.com; Parrish)

Did a new NCAA rule kill media days?

Answer: Not yet. But it's definitely created a less-than-ideal situation for at least one major conference. As Syracuse.com's Mike Waters reported Monday, two of college basketball's biggest brands (Duke and North Carolina) have decided to not take players to next month's ACC Operation Basketball, which is just a fancy term for the ACC's media day. That means no Grayson Allen or Marvin Bagley. That means no Joel Berry or Theo Pinson. And the reason is because of a new measure adopted by Power Five conferences in July that limits student-athletes' time devoted to athletic-related activities -- which now includes time spent talking with the media. As Waters explained, "in past years schools were allowed to bring athletes to the ACC media day and still count it as a day off. [But] that's no longer the case under the new rules. As a result, officials at both North Carolina and Duke have told Syracuse.com that they aren't bringing players to the ACC's Operation Basketball."

In other words, Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams are taking a stand.

It's a lot like Gregg Popovich and in-game interviews.

The coach of the San Antonio Spurs is often short with anybody asking him questions during a game -- no matter whether it's David Aldridge, Israel Gutierrez or Doris Burke. And, by all accounts, it's not because Popovich is a jerk. It's because he thinks it's crazy that he has to answer questions on TV in the middle of a game. His dismissive approach is his way of getting his point across.

Same deal here.

Invest Syracuse's tuition hike matters even if scholarships cover the difference (DO; Editorial)

Editor’s note: The Daily Orange Editorial Board met with Syracuse University administrators to discuss the Invest Syracuse initiative unveiled in July. This editorial is the first in a four-part series based on that discussion. You can read more about Invest Syracuse here.

Invest Syracuse comes with the promising objective to “expand opportunity to students of promise and talent from across the socioeconomic spectrum.” It’s worth noting $30 million of Invest Syracuse’s $100 million funding will be raised through a $3,300 tuition premium.

This tuition bump will be added starting with Syracuse University’s freshman class next year. The rationale behind the premium is based on the assumption that sticker price isn’t a student’s deciding factor when choosing a college in comparison to a higher quality of student life. But that assertion, and the argument that it won’t discourage potential students from applying, seems to be based in large part on anecdotal evidence.

“We talk to students and parents, they come in for campus tours every day,” said Dolan Evanovich, senior vice president for enrollment and the student experience. “We go to high schools.”

Administrators compare SU to peer institutions, many of which actually charge more than SU, Evanovich said.

This anecdotal evidence isn’t enough to justify raising tuition for a university that claims it’s trying to be more accessible. Administrators said there is no data to back up the idea that sticker price defines where students apply and go to college.

That ACC basketball prediction recap from busting brackets for Syracuse includes their belief that Taurean Thompson will have an impact as a sophomore in SU's analysis?

Regarding the tuition increase , I'm surprised that SU's admin truly believes that costs are irrelevant when parents/students are making college decisions. Must be a different world than I ever lived in.

What's even scarier is they have us 13 even if we had Thompson.

once you decide SU is in the equation for college I dont think cost matters. its a tier above OCC or state schools and most kids decide based on that.
