Welcome to National Bao Day!

Ancient Chinese gastronomic delicacies often cause oohs and ahhs on food holidays. On August 22, National Bao Day guarantees your taste buds will be shouting “Wow!”

At first one might consider it to be just a simple steamed bun. Dumplings aside, this is the flavorful Chinese dough used to make bāozi, or bao and is stuffed with savory meats or sweets. More than a side dish, bao is a type of sandwich which has been gaining popularity in the United States.

There are excellent reasons, too! Created as an elegant package, bao fits in the palm of the hand making it portable. Bao satisfies with all our favorite flavors. From spicy to sweet, BBQ and Thai, this little sandwich covers breakfast, lunch, supper and dessert. Still hungry? They’re great snacks and perfect for sharing, too.

Local high school basketball players get invites to Syracuse Elite Camp (PS; Ditota)

Syracuse's Elite Camp takes place Saturday in the Melo Center and a few area high school prospects are expected to be in attendance.

Syracuse has invited Symir Torrence, a 2020 guard from Syracuse who now plays at Vermont Academy, Jai Smith, a 2021 forward from Bishop Ludden and J.J. Starling, a 2022 point guard from Baldwinsville High School.

Also, Andre Jackson, a Class of 2020 forward who attends Albany Academy and plays for the Albany City Rocks EYBL 17U team, is expected to attend. So is Jalen Bradberry, a Class of 2021 guard from Niagara Falls.

The Local Attendees:

SYMIR TORRENCE

Torrence, a powerfully built 6-foot-2 point guard, will attend the Elite Camp for the second summer. He originally attended Syracuse Academy of Science, but transferred to Vermont Academy last year. He will pair in the VA backcourt this season with Tyler Bertram, the Cooperstown shooting guard.
Torrence, who led the City Rocks in assists this summer, has new scholarship offers from Tony Bennett at Virginia and Bryce Drew at Vanderbilt, his prep school coach said. Mike Hopkins offered him a scholarship at Washington. Torrence will be a junior at Vermont Academy this season and is expected to be one of the better guards in New England. Syracuse has not offered him a scholarship, though he is interested in the Orange.

"He does all the little things," Vermont Academy coach Alex Popp said, "and he makes his team better. Symir impacts winning."

JAI SMITH

Smith, a 6-foot-7 forward, will be a sophomore at Bishop Ludden. Smith posted 20 points and 21 rebounds during a game against Henninger last season. He averaged nearly 11 points per game. His coach, Gallagher Driscoll, sees him as a power forward, possibly center if he continues to grow.
"Jai, for someone his age, has a great nose for the ball. He doesn't take possessions off," Driscoll said. "He runs the floor. He's a very good passer. He has great vision and is a really good interior passer. And he can make the foul line jump shot."

Syracuse Basketball: 5 toughest non-conference opponents for 2018-19 (bustingbrackets.com; Cavallaro)

Syracuse Basketball was a surprise inclusion in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, but they still earned a trip to the Sweet Sixteen. How does their schedule look for 18-19?
Syracuse was awarded a surprise 2018 NCAA Tournament berth which shocked and even angered many college basketball fans from across the country. Fans clamored that they wanted to see mid-major teams like Middle Tennessee, or at least they claimed to have wanted that, instead of the big name programs who have “mediocre” teams.

Even though Syracuse was seen as the least deserving Tournament team, the Orange rattled off three straight wins to advance from the play-in round to the Sweet Sixteen. First Arizona State, then TCU, and finally Michigan State fell to Syracuse in their surprising postseason run.

The Orange were disliked because they were not aesthetically pleasing on offense, but their trademark 2-3 zone with 7’2” anchor Paschal Chukwu made up for the offensive shortcomings. This season, Syracuse not only looks like a much better team but also one that will look much better on offense.

Last season, Tyus Battle and Frank Howard were required to create most of the offense and often settled for low-efficiency isolation plays. The additions of freshman scoring guard Jalen Carey and transfer wing Elijah Hughes should provide more offensive options, as should the potential improvements from sophomores O’Shae Brissett and Marek Dolezaj.
