Welcome to Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which falls on Tuesday, May 5 in 2020, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.

A summer working a NYC newsstand has stuck with Syracuse... (theathletic.com; $; Gutierrez)

For a summer, Allen Griffin rode the 3-train to Penn Station from his Brooklyn home. He hopped off and walked up to the main concourse. He had a job there, although he doesn’t know what to call it. Griffin was just grateful to have a place to be and a thing to do. He had been in limbo until a buddy hired him. Griffin’s summer duty: stock newsstands at one of the busiest places in the Western Hemisphere.

Early in mornings, late at night, Griffin removed the old papers and magazines and filled the holders with fresh ones. He paid $1.25 each way to ride the subway. He collected cash payments, a little more than $10 per hour, for the work. He didn’t love the task nor did he hate it. The hours weren’t long and the conditions weren’t tough. Yet nearly 20 years later, the gig remains lodged in his head. He realized his pro basketball dream was over, but the job transported him out of daily life and helped him find a sense of freedom.

Griffin now...

Orange Watch: Father-son combinations unique to Syracuse basketball - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Before the Boeheims, Jim and Buddy, there were the Danforths, Roy and Mike. Head coach and team member. While on Jim Boeheim’s Orange coaching tree, one of his SU assistants coached his son in NCAA Div. I, while three of his former assistants have produced successful coaching sons in the Div. I and NBA ranks.

If true, and Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim decides to exit simultaneously with the final season of eligibility for son Buddy at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season (discounting that Buddy would seek a coaching position as a graduate assistant in 2022-23 with a family agreement of one more season to mentor under his father), there will be a form of poetic justice rewarding an indefatigable half century work ethic.

Whenever the elder Boeheim makes the call on ending his tenure of defining Syracuse basketball, he’ll additionally savor the notion that he finished coaching while getting to oversee one of his son’s entire college career.

While not a rarity in Div. I by any means, it is tough, however, to find many cases where both father and son enjoyed parallel success on the court and along the sidelines (only Al and Allie McGuire at Marquette (1970-73) and Press and Pete Maravich at LSU (1967-1970) in a different era stand out).

Syracuse basketball 2020 class ranked mid-tier in ACC is no big deal at all (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has a two-member 2020 recruiting class, as well as a transfer, and this class unsurprisingly isn’t rated all that high in the ACC.

A lot of Syracuse basketball fanatics have complained of late that the Orange is slipping as it pertains to its recruiting efforts. Some of their criticism is fair, and some of it is going too far, in my humble opinion.

Regardless, ESPN.com recently put out its final ratings of the top-100 incoming freshmen for the 2020 class. As such, I figured it might prove a relevant time to delve into how the ‘Cuse 2020 class compares to its foes in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The numbers, detailed below, aren’t stellar for our boys, but that’s no shock to the system whatsoever. A few additional prefaces on the subject are necessary before we dive into the data.

First and foremost, I’ll always rant and rave that you have to take these so-called rankings with the proverbial grain of salt. Sure, Syracuse often misses out on the premier prospects. But the Orange also recruits to its system, seemingly focusing less on paper ratings and more on fit. That, by the way, is something I really admire.

Carrier Dome renovation: When will we start to see more of the new roof? (PS; Carlson)

Syracuse University passed a significant mile-marker last month when it completed the crown-truss portion of its new roof, a foundational piece that will support the newest top of the building.

Syracuse University Vice President & Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala said that modern version of the Carrier Dome’s bubble-top likely will begin to take shape in July. Unlike the previous two roofs, the newest version will be supported by a bridge truss rather than air pressure, a more modern and reliable design.

“Well, I think that we’re hoping, the way the schedule is laid out now, mid-July you should start seeing that next part of the roof going on, the actual structure,” Sala said. “That needs to go very quickly in order for us to start hanging lights and sound and video underneath it. That is really scheduled tight.”

Sala said the new version will include a metal deck that covers the outside-third of the opening, with the fabric-like material covering the inside two-thirds of the building and allowing some translucence. Those two portions are expected to be put up concurrently.

NCAA Basketball: Analyzing Syracuse transfer Jalen Carey final 7 teams (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

Former top-50 NCAA Basketball prospect Jalen Carey left Syracuse for a new home. Which of his reported finalists are the best potential fits?

In the 2018 NCAA Basketball recruiting class, Jalen Carey was a four-star point guard prospect who committed to Syracuse Basketball. He was supposed to have an impact out the gate as a freshman and backup senior ball-handler Frank Howard for a year, before being inherited the starting job the season after.

That storyline never came into fruition for the 6’3 guard, despite having a strong opening to the season. He went for 26 points and seven assists against UConn and had 14 points against Oregon. Unfortunately for Carey, that was his last time he produced double figures in scoring. He ended up being left out of the rotation in the last couple of months to the season. Things ended early for Carey as a sophomore, suffering a thumb injury that took him out for almost all of this past season.

Syracuse Transfer Considering Crimson Tide (tide1009.com; Gaither)

Jalen Carey, a 6-foot-3 point guard out of Syracuse entered the transfer portal on March 16. Carey only played in two games this past season for the Orange after enduring a thumb injury. Carey has listed Marquette, Creighton, Rhode Island, Uconn, Alabama, Georgetown and BYU as future destinations according to The Athletic's Matthew Gutierrez.

Hearing that former Syracuse guard Jalen Carey is still keeping his options open for next season, and he's between Marquette, Creighton, Rhode Island, UConn, Alabama, Georgetown and BYU.

— Matthew Gutierrez (@MatthewGut21) May 4, 2020
Carey is looking for an opportunity where more playing time is possible and given that he played his last game for the Orange in mid-November in 2019 he could gain eligibility in 2020.

Carey was a four-star recruit in 2018 out of Immaculate Conception in New York and chose Syracuse over Uconn and Seton Hall.

He averaged, 12 minutes, 3.3 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1 assist in 27 games for Syracuse.
