Welcome to National Cheese Lovers Day!

Chances are you don't just like cheese, you love it. If that's the case, you are in for a treat—today is National Cheese Lovers Day! Cheese is made from curds—the bits of protein that form when milk sours—from the milk of cows, goats, sheep, and buffalo. Spices, seasonings, mold, temperature, and age help determine its flavor and texture, and these in turn help determine how it is classified. Common classifications and some examples include fresh cheese like ricotta, soft cheese like feta, semi-soft cheese like Fontina, semi-hard cheese like Gouda, hard cheese like Cheddar, double or triple crème cheese like Brillat-Savarin, blue cheese like Gorgonzola, washed rind cheese like Limburger, and bloomy rind cheese like brie. The name "cheese" comes from the Latin word caseus, which stems from the Proto-Indo-European root kwat, which means "to ferment" or "to become sour."

Taco Time! How many fans actually get those free tacos when Syracuse scores 70 points or more? (PS; Waters)

Whenever the Syracuse men’s basketball team nears the 70-point mark, anticipation in the stands begins to rise.

The student section starts to chant, “We want tacos!’’

And when the Orange does surpass 70 points, the crowd erupts.

The excitement stems from a promotion that began more than 25 years ago when the Syracuse athletics department partnered with the Hospitality Restaurant Group, which owns the Taco Bell stores in greater Syracuse area.

Thus begat, Taco Time!

“It’s our longest-running promotion,’’ Jessica Woodburn, the director of marketing for HRG, said. “Over the years, it’s taken on a life of its own.’’

The promotion offers Syracuse fans one free taco at any Taco Bell in Central New York if the Orange scores 70 or more points. The offer can be redeemed within 48 hours.

The target score used to be 75 points, but it was lowered six years ago.

“We do look to see what the average score for a season is,’’ Woodburn said. “We want it to hit about two-thirds of the time. We want it to be fun.

“The goal is to get people in the restaurants,’’ she added. “They get their taco and, hopefully, purchase a drink or something to go along with it.’’

On The Block On Demand 1-19 (ESPN; radio; Axe)

Brent dives into a big Syracuse basketball win over Clemson and what it means going forward with Duke looming. Plus, Brent’s best Super Bowl future bet will not surprise most.

Alex Sims "On The Block On Demand" 1-19 (ESPN; radio; Axe)

News Channel 9’s Alex Sims joins Brent to take some heat for her Patriots losing to the Bills and breakdown covering the Syracuse men’s basketball season this year.

As cohesive unit, Syracuse basketball put it all together in stellar Tigers win (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball roster played one heck of an all-around game in racing away from Clemson in the second half on Tuesday night in Central New York.

After suffering a heart-breaking five-point loss to surging Florida State on the Hill this past weekend, the ‘Cuse did a lot of positive things in the final 20 minutes versus the Tigers, as Syracuse basketball prevailed 91-78 to end its three-contest home-stand with a 2-1 mark.

The Orange (9-9, 3-4) shot lights out from the field as a whole and from beyond the arc. Most importantly, the ‘Cuse boasted a 12-point edge at the charity stripe, and that was the difference-maker in conquering Clemson (10-8, 2-5).

Leading the charge were senior shooting guard Buddy Boeheim and junior point guard Joe Girard III, who compiled 25 points and 23 points, respectively. But make no mistake, this was a team-inspired effort.

Syracuse basketball looked really, really good in handling Clemson.

Besides the excellent performances of the Orange’s starting guards, graduate student forward Jimmy Boeheim and junior center Jesse Edwards each recorded a double-double, and Edwards also registered four blocks.

My only tiny gripe here is that Edwards, once again, managed to foul out. He really has to remain laser-focused on not picking up silly fouls. Regardless, though, Edwards’ imposing presence on both ends of the floor was undeniably felt.

In somewhat of a twist for Syracuse basketball, the ‘Cuse dominated the Tigers on the glass, and I have to say that the ‘Cuse has fared quite well in recent Atlantic Coast Conference clashes on the boards.

And let’s talk about the bench! Head coach Jim Boeheim, who has taken a ton of criticism from fans on social media lately for his short rotation, played nine Orange guys in this league encounter. Nine!!

Per ESPN statistics, the four ‘Cuse reserves possessed a combined 24 minutes of run, which isn’t abundantly large. However, each reserve contributed one way or another.

Miami and Florida State stand in the way of Duke men's basketball winning the ACC (ncaa.com; Lopresti)

Remember when there was genuine doubt about the depth and quality of the ACC beyond Duke? Who would co-star with the Blue Devils, given the wobbles at Virginia and Louisville and Syracuse and North Carolina?

Tuesday night provided a suggestion.

Look to the state of Florida.

DUKE GOES DOWN: No. 6 Duke falls to Florida State in overtime

Tobacco Road took a curve into the Sunshine State, and it wasn’t pleasant. First, North Carolina was blown away 85-57 at Miami – the new ACC juggernaut nobody saw coming. Then, No. 6 Duke became the latest name on Florida State’s Amazing Overtime Victim’s List. When the evening was over, there were many numbers to notice, and maybe a new message from the league.

9 – Turnovers combined by Miami and Florida State in their victories. Miami had had only four against North Carolina and outscored the Tar Heels 30-5 in points off turnovers. Florida State had five against Duke in 45 minutes. On defense, the Hurricanes and Seminoles combined for 19 steals.

49-22 – Miami’s lead after one half, matching the worst halftime deficit in North Carolina history. Four Hurricanes had done all the scoring. The Tar Heels’ implosion included five turnovers in a span of 2:08 in the first half, followed by missing nine shots in a row. As his teammates rushed up 3-point attempt after 3-point attempt, Armando Bacot – the current national player of the week – did not get a shot in the first seven minutes. “I’m shocked,” coach Hubert Davis said on his postgame radio show. “First place was on the line. That has meaning. For us to come out with a lack of energy and lack of toughness is very shocking.”

3 – Miami had three players go for 20-plus points, with Isaiah Wong’s 25, Sam Waardenburg’s 21 and Kameron McGusty’s 20. The trio outscored the entire North Carolina team 66-57.

14-4 – Miami’s record, including a league-leading 6-1 mark in the ACC. The Hurricanes were picked to finish 12th in the preseason ACC poll. That’s because last season was so ugly; a 10-17 record with a roster so depleted and injury decimated, Miami played several games with only six scholarship players. Matter of fact, the Hurricanes’ mark the past three years is an unsightly 39-51. That carried over early into this year; a loss at home to UCF, a 16-point mashing by Dayton, a 32-point wipeout against Alabama.

Then things changed. They have won 10 of their past 11 games, and their only loss since Thanksgiving weekend was a one-point defeat at Florida State. Included in that spree is a two-point win over Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tuesday’s romp had to be a nice change. Their three previous games had been decided by a total of four points.

City set to vote on $11M pact with Syracuse University despite some neighbors’ objection (PS; Craig)

The Common Council likely will push forward a contentious contract with Syracuse University that supporters say will offer much-needed maintenance in a beloved park and critics say is an attempted land grab.

The agreement calls for the university to pay $11 million over five years and to offer maintenance assistance in Thornden Park, which borders the eastern edge of campus.

Despite several changes to the language in the agreement since it was first introduced in October, some neighbors and the volunteer-run Thornden Park Association still aren’t satisfied that it protects the park from becoming de facto university property. They want Thornden Park removed from the agreement completely.

“Think of Thornden Park not as an underutilized park or a dangerous park, which is how Syracuse University has painted it for decades, but as a priceless asset to our community,” said Hanah Ehrenreich, a longtime Thornden Park volunteer and former TPA board member who wants the park removed from the agreement. “We have put blood, sweat and tears into making it beautiful, making it functional, updating the playground — with many more things to come.”
