Welcome to Scotch Tape Day!

In the early 1920s, Richard Gurley Drew worked at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, now known as 3M, which at the time made sandpaper. Drew delivered sandpaper samples to auto body shops, and saw the frustration that car painters had when painting two-tone color cars. Surgical adhesive tape, library pastes, and homemade glues were used to hold newspapers on cars when painting, and as the papers were removed, sticking residues often remained, that ripped off some of the paint when they were peeled off.

Drew invented masking tape, and created it with crêpe paper, cabinetmaker's glue, and glycerin. It adhered well to cars when painting, and also came off easily afterwards without taking paint away. It was marketed as Scotch Masking Tape in 1925. The name "Scotch" stems from an ethnic stereotype that said Scottish people were stingy. Some stories claim that the tape didn't adhere well at first, or didn't have adhesive in the middle of it. The stories purport that Drew was told to go back to his "Scotch" bosses and to tell them to add more adhesive, or that they asked him why he was being so "Scotch" with the adhesive. It is unclear if Drew actually had these conversations, but nonetheless, the name stuck, as did the final version of the tape.

Jesse Edwards rises from obscurity to become one of the ACC's most improved players (PS; $; Ditota)

The cinematic scope of a Jesse Edwards biopic begins with our subject born to a close, loving family in the Netherlands, home to the world’s tallest people.

It meanders through an idyllic childhood of piano lessons and European family holidays, of youth soccer and track pursuits, of high academic achievement and grand thoughts of one day becoming a doctor.

Then, the plot thickens, the drama intensifies.

A massive growth spurt leads to swollen knees, a sore back and doctor’s orders to stay away from organized sports that now increasingly include basketball. A Dutch coach tries, with surprising difficulty, to convince American high schools to consider a now nearly 7-foot prospect. When Edwards finally connects with IMG Academy, visa problems prevent him from arriving until second semester of his senior year, when he is steered from the prestigious national team and placed instead on the school’s developmental squad.

Throw in the culture shock of America’s aggressive, in-your-face athletic mindset. Toss in a couple years of bench blues, the soul-sucking abyss of DNPs and a sprinkling of incidental game action.

Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo were escorted to the Carrier Dome tunnel with less than a minute remaining in Syracuse’s 22-point win over Wake Forest on Saturday.

The reigning NBA Finals MVP and his older brother — special guests of Adam Weitsman — had just watched Buddy Boeheim drop a season-high 30 points to lead Syracuse to a much-needed 94-72 victory in front of a rowdy crowd of 23,194.

The Antetokounmpo brothers awaited the team in the locker room, where they spent approximately eight minutes talking and taking pictures with the players before they departed for Milwaukee.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, an NBA champion and two-time MVP, scored 38 points the night before to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a win. So, true of the old saying “game recognizes game,” the Greek Freak’s short message to Boeheim was: “Great game, way to play.”

Coming from one of the game’s most dominating players, Boeheim was captivated.

Elite Combo Guard Judah Mintz Scheduling Syracuse Basketball Official Visit (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball's 2022 recruiting class is ranked as one of the best in the country, but the Orange may not be done adding talent to it. Syracuse has recently gotten involved with 6-3 combo guard Judah Mintz out of Oak Hill Academy, ranked the 33rd best player in the SI All-American SI99.

Mintz was originally committed to Pittsburgh, but reopened his recruitment rather than signing with the Panthers during the early period. Syracuse reached out to express interest, and that interest is mutual.

"It was pretty recent," Mintz said. "They called my AAU coach from Team Durant. They wanted to know if I'd be interested. I told my coach yeah and it went from there. Coach Red called me and we hopped on a Zoom like two days later."

That Zoom call took place on Sunday with the Syracuse coaching staff.

"Coach Red was on it, coach Boeheim, coach G-Mac," Mintz said. "Basically they were saying how I could come in and make an impact. My ability to get in the paint and score is something that they're going to need next year. They already have a really good class coming in and they think I can make a difference."

The next step is to get Mintz on campus for an official visit. The visit is expected to occur sometime in February.

Could Syracuse basketball be in play for 2022 4-star guard, top-35 player? (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball already has a solid five-member class in 2022, but it seems that Orange coaches are making contact with another prospect in this cycle who de-committed from a fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squad late last year.

Pro Insight director of scouting Andrew Slater said via Twitter that 2022 four-star guard Judah Mintz has a Zoom call set up with Syracuse basketball.

Slater added in this tweet that the 6-foot-3 Mintz also has a Zoom lined up with Wake Forest, along with official visits planned to DePaul on February 8-10 and to N.C. State on February 17-19. We’ll obviously continue to monitor Mintz’s recruitment and whether the ‘Cuse becomes more involved with him.

According to recruiting services, Mintz is from Washington, D.C. On the AAU circuit, he suits up for Team Durant, which is based in the D.C. area. He’s also a senior stand-out for the Mouth of Wilson, Va.-based Oak Hill Academy, which is one of the premier basketball academies nationwide.

Syracuse basketball 4-star commit on how he almost chose Mike Hopkins (itlh; Adler)

It seems as though the recruiting battle over 2022 four-star wing Chris Bunch ultimately came down to Syracuse basketball and Mike Hopkins-led Washington, according to a media report.

Last October, the 6-foot-7 Bunch verbally committed to the Orange, and he later signed his national letter of intent to suit up for the ‘Cuse.

At the time of his verbal commitment, his three finalists were the Orange, Washington and Rutgers. Bunch, a top-60 prospect in the 2022 cycle according to some recruiting services, obtained more than 20 scholarship offers throughout his recruitment.

Rob Cassidy, the basketball recruiting director for , recently published a really interesting piece in which he talked with some high-school prospects to ask them which college squad finished second in their recruiting processes. A response from Bunch is included in this article.

Syracuse basketball signee Chris Bunch discusses Mike Hopkins.

According to the story, Washington finished second in Bunch’s recruitment. Here’s a quote from him. “I was definitely really interested in Washington. I really liked coach (Mike Hopkins). I was actually going to commit there. I was thinking hard about it, but things changed overnight.”
Now, I’m not a recruiting analyst, nor am I in Bunch’s inner circle. So I don’t know what occurred “overnight” that may have swayed Bunch from committing to Washington to then, in fact, committing to the ‘Cuse.

It’s really fascinating to think about, though, especially considering that Hopkins has been known as a top-notch recruiter and was a long-time assistant on head coach Jim Boeheim’s staff before leaving to lead the Huskies beginning with the 2017–18 stanza.

Giannis Antetokounmpo visits Syracuse, where he wanted to play if he went to college: ‘I like the culture’ (PS; $; Curtis)

t’s 6 p.m. on Saturday, a couple of hours before tip-off between Syracuse and Wake Forest, and Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo are sitting side-by-side on a couch in the far corner of Adam Weitsman’s elaborate private suite inside the Carrier Dome.

The brothers, who play for the defending NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks, found time to spare in their rigorous schedules and are anticipating their first Syracuse basketball game. Both players are signing autographs, taking pictures with select fans and having side chats with Weitsman, the local businessman and Syracuse athletics superfan.

Before heading downstairs to sit in the most prominent seats in the arena — courtside near the Orange’s bench — both are formally introduced to the fans inside the building. Applause and roars of “MVP! MVP! MVP!” erupted from the Syracuse student section, a warm welcome for Giannis, a two-time winner of the NBA’s most valuable player award. Both players show off their custom Syracuse uniforms with their respective numbers No. 34 (Giannis) and 43 (Thanasis) on the back.

For Thanasis, it’s his first college game and for Giannis, his second. But it’s for a team Giannis could’ve seen himself playing for once upon a time.

“I just like the way they play,” Giannis Antetokounmpo told syracuse.com. “They play zone, they get up and down the floor. They play free. They play fast. I’ve never been here before so I’m looking forward to enjoying the game.”

Giannis, born in Athens, Greece with Nigerian roots, played professional basketball in Greece in 2012-2013 at the age of 18. Around that same time, Michael Carter-Williams and Jerami Grant were teammates at Syracuse. Grant is in his second season with the Detroit Pistons and Carter-Williams, who plays for the Orlando Magic, played for the Bucks with Antetokounmpo during the 2015-16 seasons.

So what would’ve happened if the “Greek Freak” attended Syracuse that season before declaring for the NBA draft in 2013 and formed a “Big 3″ with Carter-Williams and Grant?

“It would’ve been crazy,” Antetokounmpo said. “MCW’s my best friend. I played with him for two years in Milwaukee. It would’ve been great if we were going through the college experience together. It would’ve definitely been fun.”

Thanasis said had he gone to college, he would’ve chosen from a list of three schools, Syracuse being one of them.

Syracuse Basketball: Jim Boeheim lauds balance, it wasn’t just 1 or 2 guys (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball put it all together in the team’s impressive blowout victory against Wake Forest over the weekend.

In his post-game press conference after the Orange defeated the Demon Deacons, 94-72, on Saturday evening from the Carrier Dome, head coach Jim Boeheim was extremely pleased with his squad’s overall balance, and understandably so.

The ‘Cuse (10-11, 4-6) shot quite well from the field as a whole and from beyond the arc. But the Orange made a concerted effort to drum up a lot of its offense from inside the perimeter.

Additionally, this result was a true team effort. Everyone on the roster contributed in a meaningful way, including the three primary reserves for Syracuse basketball.

It wasn’t just one or two guys, Boeheim said. It was five guys, he added. Really, though, it was more like eight guys, and even more than that, if you include the late-game buckets from some players further down the Orange bench.

Jim Boeheim detailed why Syracuse basketball dominated the Demon Deacons.

The point here is that the ‘Cuse destroyed Wake Forest (17-5, 7-4), one of the best groups in the Atlantic Coast Conference, because the entire Orange line-up was in on the party. And that’s how, I believe, this team can reach its full potential.

Axe: SU hoops awakening, CNY connections to Super Bowl 56 (quick takes) (PS; $; Axe)

Some quick takes on where Syracuse basketball goes from here after a big win over Wake Forest, some CNY connections to Super Bowl LVI and a big injury for Syracuse lacrosse as soon as I see how to get one of Syracuse Airport’s new escape pods for my house.

Was it a wake-up call for the Orange or a flash in the pan during a season of ups and downs?

Syracuse basketball managed a total of 53 points in its Tuesday loss at Pittsburgh. Four days later, the Orange scored 54 points in the second half alone against Wake Forest during a 92-74 win on Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

If SU is going to keep it up and win more than two straight games for the first time all season, a few things need to happen.

ACC power rankings: Florida State loses twice, so who is No. 1 in the ACC now? (PS; $; Waters)

A week ago, the top of the ACC standings had several teams locked in a tie.

So I went with the tie-breaking procedure that the ACC; and many other conferences, use to break ties at the end of the season. The result was Florida State took the No. 1 spot followed by Duke, Miami, Notre Dame and several other schools.

Then Florida State promptly lost its next two games, casting serious doubt on my tie-breaking procedure. So this week, I’m breaking another virtual three-way at the top of the ACC standings my way. Forget procedures. I’m just going to pick the team that I think is the best.

(This is sure to work)

1. Duke

Record:
17-3 (7-2)

Last week’s ranking: 3rd

Last week’s results: Win 71-69 over Clemson; Win 74-65 over Louisville

This week’s schedule: Monday at Notre Dame; Saturday at North Carolina

Why No. 1? Duke returns to the top spot after gritting out a win over Clemson and then hold off an inspired effort from Louisville on the road. The Blue Devils have a huge week coming with road games at Notre Dame and North Carolina.

2. Miami

Record:
16-5 (8-2)
Last week’s ranking: 2nd

Last week’s results: Win 78-75 over Virginia Tech; Win 73-62 over Georgia Tech\

This week’s schedule: Wednesday vs. Notre Dame; Saturday at Virginia

Why No. 2? Miami stays at No. 2 thanks to Charlie Moore’s buzzer-beater to avoid overtime at Virginia Tech.

3. Notre Dame

Record:
14-6 (7-2)
Last week’s ranking: 5th
Last week’s results: Win 73-65 over N.C. State; Win 69-65 over Virginia

This week’s schedule: Monday vs. Duke; Wednesday at Miami; Saturday at N.C. State

Eye-catching ‘ice volcano’ is erupting at Upstate New York park (photos, video) (PS; $; Hernandez)

It may be the bleak midwinter, but Upstate New York has no shortage of beautiful sights this time of year, from frozen waterfalls to a growing “ice volcano” in one Western New York park.

Thanks to consistently freezing temperatures, Letchworth State Park’s winter work of art is beginning to grow around a gravity-fed fountain outside the Glen Iris Inn. In some years it has grown to over 20 feet high, and can grow to its full mammoth size of 50 feet as it did in 2015.

The park’s inn was once the home of successful businessman William Pryor Letchworth who had the home and the fountain built in the late 1800s. The unheated fountain uses the water from a pond uphill to push the fountain spray up high into the sky.

The sub-zero spectacle has become a big draw to the state park known as the “Grand Canyon of the East” for its sweeping, scenic gorges. Visitors have taken to social media to show off this year’s growing cool creation.

If you’re planning an adventure to the fountain, the only way to access it is through the park’s Castile gate at 6787 Denton Corners Road, Castile, NY.
