Welcome to National Waffle Day!
Although the ancient Greeks cooked wafers similar to waffles using metal plates, what we'd recognize today as waffle irons got their start in Belgium in the fourteenth century. These irons consisted of metal plates that were hinged together and connected to wooden handles, which allowed them to be held over open fires. While the plates of modern waffle irons are honeycomb-shaped, which molds waffles in such a way so they can easily hold syrup and other toppings, early waffle iron plates had designs or etchings that left imprints in the waffles. The downside of these early irons was that the waffles, handles, and sometimes even the person using the iron were burned. Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York, patented the first American waffle iron in 1869. This iron was designed for cooking waffles over wood or gas stoves and easily rested on them. It had a handle that made it easy to turn over, which made it less likely that its user would get burned.

Syracuse basketball to host LSU in first year of ACC-SEC Challenge (PS; $; Waters)
The Syracuse Orange will host LSU in the first year of the new ACC-SEC Challenge.
The Syracuse-LSU game will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. at the JMA Wireless Dome, according to an announcement from SU’s athletic department. The games in the ACC-SEC Challenge will be on ESPN’s platform of networks, including the ACC Network.
This will be just the second meeting between Syracuse and LSU. Syracuse won the only other meeting, 76-64, at the Carrier Dome on Feb. 16, 1985. Syracuse great Rafael Addison had 25 points and eight rebounds in that gaame, while Orange legend Pearl Washington added 20 points in the win.

Syracuse men’s and women’s basketball will host LSU and Alabama, respectively, in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge in the JMA Wireless Dome, SU Athletics announced in a press release.
The men will play the Tigers on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. while the women will host the Crimson Tide two days later at the same time.
For the men, this will be the second-ever meeting between the programs as SU defeated the Tigers back in 1985 while the women will take on Alabama for the first time ever. Alabama has reached the NCAA Tournament twice out of the last three seasons.
Previously, the Atlantic Coast Conference partnered with the Big Ten for their ACC/Big Ten Challenge, an event spearheaded by ESPN, who helped develop the competition. But as a result of ESPN losing its media rights with the Big Ten, the network created the ACC/SEC Challenge.
Aside from LSU, SU men’s basketball’s non-conference schedule includes matchups with Oregon, Georgetown and New Hampshire. The game against Oregon will be played in South Dakota. SU will also face local schools Canisius, Colgate and Niagara in the Dome.

Even before the ACC-SEC challenge matchups dropped earlier today, Syracuse’s non-conference schedule had a drastically different look from last year’s. The Orange only faced three high major opponents before ACC play in Fall 2022 (St. John’s, Illinois, & Georgetown). In 2023, SU will meet a minimum of five such teams (barring a sudden end to a recurring matchup). Now that we know Syracuse will host LSU in its inaugural ACC-SEC challenge clash, let’s take a look at how things are going to shape up leading into the conference gauntlet.
To properly assess the season ahead, it makes sense to center it all around the Maui Invitational the Orange are playing in Thanksgiving week. With three games in three days against college basketball’s cream of the crop, it will be a great test. With little relief before and after.
Remember Colgate? You’ve been spared the pain if you don’t. The Raiders have beaten the Orange by 10+ points inside the Dome not once, but twice over the last two seasons. That should never ever happen. This game could provide a very early indicator of how the season could go, because a third loss to Colgate in as many years would be an early cause for panic.

The SEC/Big 12 Challenge is no more.
Beginning in the 2023-24 season, it will be replaced by the SEC/ACC Challenge, pitting basketball teams from each league against each other. For LSU, both the men’s and women’s teams were selected.
On the men’s side, coach Matt McMahon’s team will take on Syracuse in its first season without legendary coach Jim Boeheim. This will be a rare college basketball matchup between power programs as the two have only met once, a win for the Orange back in 1985.
The teams were supposed to play at Madison Square Garden in Dec. 2020 in a matchup that was ultimately scratched due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The defending national champion women’s team, on the other hand, will face an opponent it’s more intimately familiar with. It will be a rematch of the Final Four contest from this year’s NCAA tournament, which the Tigers won 79-72, knocking the No. 1-seeded Hokies out of the tournament.

Numerous Syracuse basketball four-star and five-star recruiting targets are participating this week at a prestigious pro-style camp in the Sunshine State.
The National Basketball Players Association (“NBPA”) is currently holding its Top 100 camp at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Bay Lake, Fla., near Orlando. This showcase event runs from June 26 to July 1, according to the camp’s Web site.
One hundred of the top high-school prospects across numerous recruiting classes were selected to attend the Top 100 camp, including at least eight players who presently hold Syracuse basketball scholarship offers.
At this event, participants are being mentored by current and former NBA players, and activities include pro-style combine drills, shooting exercises and team scrimmages in a tournament format, per the Top 100’s Web site and a NBPA press release from late May.
Players are also attending educational programs that focus on topics such as mental health and wellness, financial literacy and NIL. It’s important to also note that college coaches and NBA scouts are at the camp.

Led by men’s soccer, Syracuse finishes with best all-around athletics ranking since 2016-17 (PS; $; Carlson)
Syracuse finished the 2022-23 academic year ranked No. 45 in the Learfield Directors Cup standings, a points-based ranking that aims to recognize schools for their success building an all-around athletic program.
The ranking was the best for Syracuse since 2016-17, when the school ranked No. 44. It ranked No. 46 in 2017-18.
While in line with many recent years, the performance was a substantial jump from the previous two, when the school’s athletic program performed especially poorly.
Last year Syracuse ranked No. 72 in the country, better than just five other Power-Five programs. The year before that, SU ranked No. 64.
Those rankings might mean very little to the average fan, whose focus tends to fall on football and men’s and women’s basketball. They are an effort to try to build appreciation for success outside the attention-grabbing sports.

Why Coach K Thinks NCAA Should Run College Basketball 'Like a Business' (localsyr.com; Jackson)
While Mike Krzyzewski no longer roams the sidelines of Cameron Indoor Stadium, the longtime Duke coach is abreast of the changes that have taken place in college basketball and the sport’s current state within the NCAA.
Krzyzewski, who spent 42 years at Duke, recently came out of retirement in May to serve as the NBA’s special advisor to basketball operations. In a Q&A with The Charlotte Observer, the former Duke coach explained why college basketball should be organized and managed “like a business” going forward to keep the game relevant.
“It’s [college basketball] a billion-dollar business,” Krzyzewski said in the interview. “It’s the only thing that runs the NCAA. Football does not run the NCAA. Football runs conferences, and they make millions of dollars. The NCAA does not get one penny from football. … So their main source of revenue is men’s college basketball. My feeling is you should combine men’s and women’s basketball, make them an autonomous group, have a leadership structure and marketing and run it like a business. But, what do I know?”
With Krzyzewski’s “big business” mindset of college basketball, it is also why he believes that it is important for Duke, UNC and the entire ACC to persevere its “common ground” to “perpetuate the game.”
The Naismith Hall of Famer led the Blue Devils to five national championships and 13 NCAA tournament Final Four appearances. Krzyzewski also notched 1,202 wins, earning him the title of the winningest men’s coach in the NCAA.

Get ready for yet another day -- or two -- of unhealthy air in Upstate NY (PS; $; Coin)
Thursday is expected to be another day of unhealthy air in Upstate New York as winds from the west keep pushing Canada wildfire smoke toward us.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation has issued air quality alerts for all of New York state on Thursday. The area of “unhealthy” air will extend from Buffalo to the Adirondacks, and from the Southern Tier to the Canadian border.
The DEC said those areas are likely to see an air quality index of 150 to 160. The “unhealthy” category, denoted by red on air quality maps, begins at 151.
State officials said the smoke is likely to leave more slowly than it arrived, and could linger well into Friday.
At unhealthy levels, everybody should stay indoors as much as possible and filter their indoor air, said Alistar Hayden, a public health professor at Cornell University.
“When the outside air does reach that red, unhealthy air quality index, people should avoid outdoor activities, especially those where you’re breathing heavily,” Hayden said. “Today and tomorrow are not the days to go for a run.”
Western New York has been in the unhealthy range since 4 a.m. as smoke moved in from the Midwest. Syracuse reached unhealthy about 3 p.m. and is expected to stay there.

Faye-ette? Name the 4 baby swans and win a Manlius contest (PS; Doran)
The village of Manlius is sponsoring a “Name the Baby Swans” contest as the four cygnets continue to grow and thrive in another location.
The contest will run through July 4. Children aged 4 to 12 are eligible, and can win a prize if their name is selected. Entries can be dropped off at a designated table at the Manlius Fourth of July celebration or at village hall.
The four cygnets — two males and two females — are being cared for by wildlife biologist Mike Bean, who has been the Manlius swans’ caretaker for years. He said they are thriving and “growing like weeds.”
The village expects to have the baby swans back on the fate of the Swan Pond in the coming weeks, village officials have said.
Manny remains on the pond at this time. His mate, Faye, was killed and eaten the in May.

Out of our three stretches of the non-conference slate, this one is easily the least daunting. SU opens the season with three home games, the first two of which are against New Hampshire and Canisius in a three-day span. The Golden Griffins have not made the Big Dance since 1996, while the Wildcats are one of 45 Division I programs to never make it. The four cygnets — two males and two females — are being cared for by wildlife biologist Mike Bean, who has been the Manlius swans’ caretaker for years. He said they are thriving and “growing like weeds.”
The village expects to have the baby swans back on the fate of the Swan Pond in the coming weeks, village officials have said.
Manny remains on the pond at this time. His mate, Faye, was killed and eaten the in May.
