Welcome to Great Lakes Awareness Day!
Great Lakes Awareness Day celebrates the Great Lakes and highlights the issues they face, and how the lakes can be preserved. Events for the day have involved organizations such as schools, aquariums, and museums. There is not much information available online about how the day is celebrated or how it came to be.
There are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie. Together they make up the largest body of freshwater on Earth and stretch 750 miles from east to west. They are located on the border of the United States and Canada and touch the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. It is believed that at one time the Great Lakes were covered by a glacier—it receded towards Canada and left depressions filled with water.

Former Syracuse basketball center Baye Moussa Keita is back in Africa on dual mission (PS; $; Ditota)
Baye Moussa Keita is back in Africa with dual purpose.
The former Syracuse basketball center has held a basketball camp for the past five summers in his hometown of Saint-Louis, Senegal, for kids ranging in age from 6 to 15 years old.
Over the past few years, he’s scheduled those camps around his duties for the NBA. Keita is an operations manager for the Basketball Africa League, one of five leagues under the NBA’s umbrella (NBA, WNBA, G League, 2K and BAL).
He’s been touring South Africa, Egypt and now Senegal to oversee the BAL, which has a total of 12 teams (four in each region) and lasts about four months. He is responsible for day-to-day operations of the league, which will begin its Senegal phase Saturday in Dakar.
Keita is based in the United States and schedules his Senegal camp around his BAL responsibilities.
Since its conception more than five years ago, Keita has solicited funds for his camp to help improve the outdoor basketball facilities in his hometown. Over the years, he’s leveled the court, installed new backboards and maintained sagging walls that enclose the outdoor facility.
Now, he’s building bathrooms on site and constructing a shady area for kids to escape the withering summer heat. He’s hoping to raise enough to build an on-site storage area to house equipment.
Kids in his hometown, he said, don’t have easy access to camps or outside basketball instruction.
“I wanted to do something to help them out,” he said. “Dakar, the capital, is four hours from my hometown. The kids there don’t have exposure to guys like me that went to play college basketball.”
Keita expects 150 kids at this year’s camp, which runs from May 18-19 and is free for all participants. His younger brother is busy working with contractors to get the bathrooms built and will assist with the camp; so will other coaches from club teams in the area.

Syracuse guard Judah Mintz invited to G-League Elite camp (report) (PS; $; Carlson)
Syracuse guard Judah Mintz was invited to the G-League Elite Camp on Saturday, according to a list of invitees posted by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
The top performers at the G-League camp earn invitations to the NBA Combine. Forty-four players are invited. Other familiar names include former Syracuse player Jesse Edwards, Pittsburgh’s Blake Hinson and Arizona’s Caleb Love.
Mintz was not included on the list of 78 names invited to the NBA Combine released on Friday.

Can the New York State Fair pay for itself? For now, it still needs a boost from taxpayers (PS; $; Cazentre)
The New York State Fair recorded an operating budget surplus last year, a positive sign after about a decade marked mostly by losses.
But the surplus was less than it was the previous year. And there wouldn’t have been a surplus in either year without a continuing and substantial bailout from state taxpayers. If not for a $7 million state subsidy last year, the fair would have posted a $5.3 million operating loss.
The state subsidy has been $7 million in each of the past three years, and is scheduled to continue at that level in the coming year. In addition to canceling operating losses, the subsidy is large enough to provide a financial cushion in the form of a positive end-of-the-year balance.
That year-end balance for the 2023-24 year, which included the 2023 fair, was $6.2 million. That’s by far the highest balance in the past 12 years.
Until about a decade ago, the state’s fair’s annual operating budget typically broke even on its own, or sometimes generated a modest surplus for the following year. In those years, extra state aid, if there was any, was usually less than $100,000.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers decided to keep the subsidy this year even as state officials try other methods to restore the fair to the pay-its-own-way model. That includes its recent decision to slightly increase admission and parking prices for the 2024 fair.

Steve Martin, Martin Short bring dueling jokes and dueling banjos to Syracuse (review) (PS; $; Herbert)
Steve Martin and Martin Short returned to Syracuse on Friday night for a show that was mostly familiar — but still very funny.
The comedy stars, who became friends after co-starring in 1986′s “The Three Amigos,” performed to a nearly sold-out crowd at the Landmark Theatre, mixing in jokes, stories, songs, impressions and even some bluegrass music. The show was dubbed “The Dukes of Funnytown,” though about two-thirds of the material was the same as their 2018 Netflix special “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life.”
That’s not a bad thing. If classic rock bands can play their greatest hits again and again for decades — with few fans wanting to hear the new stuff — then two comedy legends should be able to repeat some bits you may have heard before. (Short sitting on a piano and dangling his legs like a marionette will never not be funny.)
Martin and Short are at their best when they’re simply trying to make each other laugh, and a lot of that comes from sharing dueling “Hollywood compliments.” They poke fun at each other with passive-aggressive comments, constantly trying to one-up each other and loving every minute of it.

During the football season, Syracuse turns into a true football town. It’s during fall when you can hear the famous drumline of the Syracuse University Marching Band practicing outside the Dome football stadium.
Ahh…the memories. Yours truly used to be a part of THAT quarter of the population and a proud, Clarinet playing, member of the very band that will wake you up at 7 on a Saturday morning.
That said, thanks to the brimming downtown of Syracuse, its history, culture, delicious food selections, and beautiful nature spread throughout Onondaga County, you truly needn’t be a football fan to fall in love with the city.
