Welcome to Lost Sock Memorial Day!

How often have you reached into your sock drawer or laundry basket, perplexed to find one sock, but not the one that matches it? Chances are that you have held onto your lone socks, with hopes that someday their matches would return. Lost Sock Memorial Day is for looking for those lost socks one last time, honoring them, and then letting go by throwing away or putting to another use those unpaired socks that have been lingering in your sock drawer.

Is there a deadline for players in the transfer portal to make a decision? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

The NCAA’s transfer portal has dominated the discussion in college basketball since the end of the NCAA tournament.

In fact, the portal dominated the conversation even before the Connecticut Huskies cut down the nets for the second straight year.

The portal is everything when it comes to college basketball these days as coaches see their rosters depleted and then look to restock the shelves.

As a result, the Mailbox continues to get inundated with questions regarding the portal and its effects.

(If you have a question; follow-up or otherwise, for the Mailbox, email it to mwaters@syracuse.com).

Q: Is there a date by which a player in the transfer portal needs to officially sign with a school to be eligible to play next season?

Gerry C.

Mike:
Players had to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal by May 1, but there is no date by which they have to sign with a new school.

All a player has to do is sign his (or her) scholarship paperwork with a school before the fall semester begins.

Now, it would be advisable for most athletes to commit to a school sooner rather than later. That’s because coaches aren’t going to wait for most athletes to make up their minds. The coaches want to fill their roster needs as quickly as possible.

There were roughly 1,800 players in the transfer portal this spring and many will end up without a landing spot; or face the prospect of dropping down to D-II or D-III.

An elite player might be able to hold off on his decision and not lose out on options, but that would be the rare exception.

Q: What is the rule with the transfer portal post COVID

Syracuse basketball finalizing deal to play in 2025 event with millions in NIL payouts (itlh; Adler)

A deal is "expected to be finalized soon" for Syracuse basketball to compete at an event in 2025 that would provide participating schools with millions of dollars in name, image and likeness ("NIL") payouts, I've learned from Jason Belzer, who is the founder of the Atlanta-based Student Athlete NIL (“SANIL”).

Matt Norlander and Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports published a detailed article on this event, noting the Orange in their piece. The event, to be called the "Players Era Festival," would be held in Las Vegas and would commence this November with eight squads that would each receive $1 million NIL payouts, with the winner or winners of this tournament being awarded "in the neighborhood of another $1 million."

According to CBS Sports, the eight-team field for the 2024 event will include Alabama, Houston, Notre Dame, Oregon, Rutgers, San Diego State and Texas A&M. The final school is still being determined.

Per Norlander and Dodd, a 2025 tournament, should it occur, would likely expand to 16 teams, with those engaging in discussions about possibly playing in 2025 including Syracuse basketball, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan and Virginia.

In mid-March, Amanda Christovich, a sports business reporter with Front Office Sports, first reported on the development of the Players Era Festival.

SANIL operates numerous commercial NIL collectives around the country, including the one that launched last September to support all 'Cuse sports, Orange United.

On Wednesday, Belzer said to me via text message that a deal for Syracuse basketball to play in this Las Vegas tournament in 2025 is "expected to be finalized soon." He noted that SANIL helped facilitate the deal on behalf of Orange United and Syracuse.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Jaquan Carlos twice scored 90 points in high school games (itlh; Adler)

Late last month, Syracuse basketball landed a commitment from four-star transfer Jaquan Carlos, a junior point guard from Coastal Athletic Association ("CAA") member Hofstra.

The addition of the 6-foot, 170-pound Carlos bolsters the Orange's backcourt depth for the 2024-25 season, particularly with sophomore point guard Judah Mintz headed to this summer's NBA Draft, while sophomore guards/wings Justin Taylor and Quadir Copeland elected to enter the transfer portal.

Following the decision by Carlos to transfer to the 'Cuse, several experts told me that this new Syracuse basketball commit is a talented pass-first, pure point guard who has strong court vision, is laser-focused on making his teammates better, and gets after it on the defensive end.

Carlos can also score. It remains to be seen whether he will be the team's starting point guard in 2024-25 or comes off the bench as a key reserve. And the Orange's roster does have numerous other offensive weapons. But make no mistake about it: Carlos is a bucket-getter himself, too.

Syracuse basketball four-star PG signee Jaquan Carlos did some remarkable things in high school.

In recent days, SU Athletics put out a press release on Carlos officially joining the 'Cuse for 2024-25. There were some interesting tidbits in this announcement.

Syracuse Picks Up An Experienced Guard With Hofstra Transfer Jaquan Carlos (bcsnn.com)
Jaquan Carlos, a 6-0, 170 guard who spent the last three seasons at Hofstra, has announced his transfer to Syracuse. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Carlos is a two-time Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) All-Defensive Team member.

PLAYING FOR THE PRIDE
Carlos logged three campaigns with Hofstra and was a starter for the past two seasons. He saw court time in 19 contests as a freshman and Hofstra produced a 21-11 overall record, including a 13-5 mark in the CAA. Carlos was named to the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.

As a sophomore in 2022-23, Carlos joined the starting lineup for 34-of-35 games. He averaged 6.7 points, 4.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 32.7 minutes per outing. Carlos was named to the CAA All-Defensive Team. The Pride finished 25-10 overall, 16-2 in the CAA, and earned a berth in the NIT.

In 2023-24, Carlos produced averages of 10.4 points, 6.3 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 35.5 minutes per game. He helped the Pride to a 20-13 overall record and a 12-6 CAA mark. Carlos ranked 14th among Division I performers in assist average. He was selected to the CAA All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive year.

THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL
He averaged 20.4 points per game in 19 contests as a freshman at Thomas Jefferson. In 2018-19, his sophomore campaign, he helped his team to a 21-7 overall record and a 21-2 mark in the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) and averaged 20.5 points an outing. Carlos upped his scoring average to 25.7 as a junior. He had a 92-point and a 90-point outing in his pandemic-shortened senior season. Carlos converted 10 3-pointers in each contest. Thomas Jefferson was 7-0 that season. Carlos graduated as the all-time leading scorer at Thomas Jefferson.

Former Syracuse Basketball Guard Quadir Copeland Transfers to McNeese St. + Starting Lineup Talk (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Former Syracuse Basketball Guard Quadir Copeland has transferred to McNeese State. The breakup between Copeland and Coach Adrian Autry was mutual. The Orange also have plenty of three faces in the (projected) starting lineup in 2025: Jaquan Carlos, Donnie Freeman, and Eddie Lampkin. How does this year's starters compare to last year?

Former Syracuse basketball guard Quadir Copeland transfers to McNeese State (PS; $: Ditota)
Quadir Copeland is heading to McNeese State, he told Joe Tipton of on3sports.com on Wednesday. Copeland confirmed the report on his Instagram.

Copeland, a 6-foot-6 guard/small forward, played two seasons at Syracuse before heading into the transfer portal after the 2023-24 year.

He will play for Will Wade, the former LSU coach who was fired from that school in 2022 and re-emerged last year at McNeese State, which plays in the Southland Conference.

Wade’s Cowboys finished 30-4 last season and lost to Gonzaga in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He had been on a meteoric rise as a head coach, moving from Chattanooga to VCU to LSU before an FBI sting and numerous recruiting and bribery allegations derailed his career.

He has since resurrected a McNeese team that went 11-23 the year before he arrived in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Copeland averaged 9.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists his sophomore year. He played mostly at small forward or point guard. At his best, he is an electric player, a versatile scorer, facilitator and rebounder, though he has struggled to shoot from the 3-point line and has committed his share of turnovers.

Syracuse coach Adrian Autry has said publicly that Copeland’s entry into the portal was a mutual decision between him and the school.

Observations:

Initially, UNC and Louisville were both Top 5, along with Georgetown, UNLV, and Oklahoma.
Syracuse made a brief appearance in 1982-91.
Duke exploded onto the scene in the early 80's, and except for a couple of years, haven't left the Top 5 since.
Kansas joined Duke the following year as a perrenial Top 5 team.
Kentucky and UNC appeared, disappeared, and reappeared on this list (only to disappear again).
Gonzaga joined the Top 5 in 1997-2006 and, except for a couple of years, like Duke, they haven't dropped off.
