PS Hometown Madness Coverage

Baltimore vs International; Baltimore Wins Close One (Poll)

Breakdown

Both Baltimore and the International team scored convincing victories in the quarterfinals of the Hometown Madness. Baltimore received 60 percent of the votes (443 to 295) in its win over Rochester, while the International team had 62 percent of the votes (382 to 228) as it beat Syracuse.

Baltimore came into the Hometown Madness as one of the favorites. The Charm City team is led by Carmelo Anthony. He is part of a three-forward lineup that includes C.J. Fair and Donte Greene. Michael Lloyd plays the point, while Herman Harried gives away some height at the center position.

The International team has more balance throughout its lineup. Tyler Ennis is at the point with Marius Janulis at shooting guard. The forwards are Leo Rautins and Kris Joseph with Rony Seikaly manning the middle. Off the bench, the International team can call upon Baye Moussa Keita, Kristof Ongenaet, Fab Melo and Elvir Ovcina.

Rautins, a native of Canada, said the International team would beat Baltimore in the same way that the San Antonio Spurs beat the LeBron James-led Miami Heat.

JB Signs a Basketball Before Practice

JB, Hop Spend the Day in West Point with USA Basketball (PS; Ditota)

They woke early on Monday, assembled for breakfast at 7 with USA Basketball comrades in their New York City hotel before journeying to this picturesque military academy by the Hudson.

Syracuse basketball coaches Jim Boeheim and Mike Hopkins watched soldiers compete in an obstacle course, saw cadets swimming for survival, visited a graveyard and ate with 4,000 cadets in the mess hall before walking into Christl Arena, where hundreds of fans waited to watch a collection of America's best basketball players.

They shook hands with military personnel. They posed for photos. The two Syracuse coaches absorbed the history of these hallowed grounds and were awed by what they observed.

"It's a great thing, a great place. Obviously, there's great history here," Boeheim said. "Eisenhower, all the great leaders that have come through here, it's just an amazing place. It's part of what makes our country so great."

Dressing Jim Boeheim: A Rochester Clothier Makes and Styles JB's Wardrobe (PS; Ditota)

On a drive through Syracuse toward New York City a few years back, Peter E. Roberti turned to his son and asked a compelling question:

"Why aren't we dressing Jim Boeheim?"

Founded 50 years ago by Adriano Roberti, Adrian Jules is an upscale clothierbased in Pittsford that creates garments for professional athletes, coaches and other men of means. A previous relationship with Boeheim had waned, so on that fateful trip, Roberti flipped open his cell phone, located an old number for Boeheim and made the call that reunited the brand with the Syracuse basketball coach.

Coach Vic's Weekly Showcase of Top Ohio HS Hoops Talent Features SU Verbal Matt Moyer (landgrantholyland.com; Fleer)

...
Matt Moyer (6'8 PF / Gahanna Lincoln / 2016):
Committing to Syracuse a week ago, Moyer showed flashes of his incredible upside that was the reason for a meteoric rise in recruitment this summer. At 6-foot-8 with a 7-foot-2 wingspan, Moyer is incredibly long, and is a nightmare in transition. Throwing down several thunderous dunks, Moyer also finished acrobatically in the lane on several drives, showing continually improvement in his game.

Philadelphia's Mo'ne Davis Emerges as Big Star in Little League World Series (PS; Axe)

...
Not only can Davis fire a 70 mph fastball, she hit a single in the first inning of the Dragons' game against a team from Pearland, Texas, to become only the sixth girl to record a hit in the Little League World Series

Out of the nearly 9,000 players who have participated in the Little League World Series, only 18 were girls. Davis is the fourth American girl, and with Emma March of Canada also playing, this is the third time in the tournament’s 68-year history that two girls are competing at the same time.

Does Davis see herself as a role model for young girls looking to break into sports?

“It’s very unreal,” she said at a press conference on Sunday. “I never thought that at the age of 13 I would be a role model, but now it’s real. I always wanted to be a basketball role model; being a baseball role model is really cool.”

Some Major League names have noticed Davis' success so far at the LLWS.

Barenaked Ladies

Yes, Steven Page left the group five years ago. And, yes, Page was the lyrical menace behind sharp-tongued tunes like "One Week" and "Pinch Me." But the Canadian four-piece was a pivotal part of the soundtrack of the 1990s. It's worth seeing what they're up to in 2014, fresh off the release of last year's album, "Grinning Streak."

Jason Derulo
Friday, Aug. 22, 8 p.m.

This may well be the biggest thing to happen to Chevy Court since Bruno Mars filled the place in 2011. Derulo has stormed the pop music scene this summer with his infectious hit, "Talk Dirty To Me." The song proved its place in modern zeitgeist when Jimmy Fallon and Kevin Spacey took a crack at it. But prior to 2014, Derulo was already an established R&B singer with hits like "Whatcha Say" and "In My Head." He's the show to see at the Fair this summer.
