Orange Watch: Early ACC Schedule Shakes Out Favorably for Syracuse Basketball (sujuiceonline.com; Bierman)

Item: Following Wednesday night’s final non-league game against Cornell (6:00 p.m. ET / ESPNU), it’s all ACC play the rest of the way for the 8-4 Orange, and with five of the 15 league schools ranked in the Top 25 this week, including No. 2 Duke and No. 3 Virginia, in what will already be a step up in intensity each time out, at least SU’s first seven games are not among any of the five ranked teams.

Since it’s near the end of his career, this season for Jim Boeheim, by coincidence tied into the timing of the release of his personal career thoughts in the autobiography “Bleeding Orange” (which was no doubt a favorite gift to give/receive among Orange Nation last week), will stand out as much for the early season learning curve of new players manning new starting positions and the unusual occurrence of four early season defeats, but also for the 12 sessions so far in which the SU boss has sat on the postgame podium to reveal his honest assessment for public consumption on the state of his players individually, the team as a whole, with a consistent two month theme:

“Overall, this is a real good learning experience for this team, and we’ve got a week (until the next game) to kind of learn some things (from this game).” – Nov. 2 following the win over Carleton in the exhibition opener.

Surprisingly, Defense is a Concern for Syracuse (sujuiceonline.com; Stechschulte)

After a dozen games, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim finds himself in a position he has not been in for quite some time. Following the Orange dispatching Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon, the head coach spent a large portion of his post-game press conference lamenting the state of the SU defense, and rightfully so.

While SU bounced back from a less-than-stellar performance in the first half, the 49ers showed the Hall of Fame coach that there is a lot of work to be done, picking apart the defense for nine assists on their dozen field goals after intermission even though that was the half with better defensive effort. The 49ers employed a common strategy against the 2-3 zone: passing the ball to the free throw line area, then looking for entry passes to baseline cutters. Even though they’ve seen this offense frequently in the past, the Orange looked completely unprepared for the 49ers to execute this.

In each of the last four years, the Orange finished in the top 20 in Ken Pomeroy’s rankings for adjusted defensive efficiency. This year, they stand 30th in that rating.

ACC Basketball Night in Review: Jahlil Okafor and Duke Dispatch Toledo to Remain Unbeaten (PS; Stevens)

Duke's Jahlil Okafor was ultra-efficient yet again.

Boston College never trailed in a defeat of UMass Lowell.

That, plus an extended look at Tuesday's 10-game schedule throughout the league, in the ACC night in review.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

27

Points for Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor in the Blue Devils' 86-69 defeat of Toledo on Monday. Okafor was 12 of 15 from the floor as the Blue Devils (11-0) returned from an 11-day layoff to eventually shake off the Rockets (7-5) at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
