PledgeOfAllegiance.jpg

Welcome to National Pledge of Allegiance Day!

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth's Companion on September 8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country.

In its original form it read:

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. At this time it read:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Tyler Roberson Talks Weight Gain, Expanding Game, Prepping for Big Junior Season (PS; Ditota)

...
Donna Ditota: The last time I saw you, you said the big thing you wanted to do over the summer was get stronger. How did you approach doing that?

Tyler Roberson: I lifted all summer. I did that when I was here (for summer classes) and back home. I added some weight. So I think I definitely accomplished that.

DD: What specifically did you do?
TR: I just lifted every day and I tried to eat more to add the weight that I needed.

DD: Why did you think you needed to get stronger? Did you feel like there were times last year when you got knocked around?
TR: Yeah, against certain teams, I think I could have used the extra weight and the extra strength. So doing that I think it's going to help me this season.

DD: In what sense?
TR: Rebounding. Playing against physical players.

DD: So did you change your diet? Did you eliminate certain foods from your diet or add certain foods?
TR: I tried to eliminate eating unhealthy food. But it was mostly just eating an extra meal every day or adding a snack or two to add the weight that I needed.

DD: What did you weigh when you left and what do you weigh now? (SU's mediaguide from last year lists him at 212.)
TR: I haven't weighed myself for a couple weeks. But at the end of last season, I might have weighed about 220 and last time I weighed myself, I weighed 226.

DD: You've played the four most of the time you've been here. Is that a position you feel most suited for?
TR: Yeah. I played the four and the three in high school. They both feel good. Whatever helps the team. I'll play either one.

Recruiting Roundup: Huerter Verbals to Terps, Thompson Working Out Plans to Visit Syracuse (thejuice; Cheng)

Before we get to the recruiting links for today, I wanted to wish former Syracuse linebacker Marquis Spruill luck as he tries out for the Miami Dolphins. Spruill looked like he would catch on with the Falcons last year until he tore his ACL. On that note, let’s move on to the recruiting world…

Former Syracuse target Kevin Huerter committed to Maryland over the weekend. He was with the Terps for an official visit this weekend after visiting Maryland unofficially last month.Syracuse had offered Huerter as a 2017 prospect, but didn’t have room for him in its 2016 class. Syracuse, Iowa, Indiana, Creighton and Davidson had all been schools that had shown interest.

Meanwhile, another Syracuse target will be in town soon according to SNY.tv’s very own, Adam Zagoria. Taurean Thompson, a 6-foot-9 power forward now at Brewster (N.H.) Academy, took an official visit to Xavier over the weekend, and is working out his plans to visit Syracuse. “Syracuse is later this month,” Thompson said. “Just focused on settling in at Brewster Academy for now.”

SLAM Online has a new mixtape for 2017 guard Trevon Duval. Duval has offers fromSyracuse, Arizona, UConn, UCLA, Kansas, Maryland, Louisville, among others. Duval is arguably the best player in the 2017 class and ranked in the top 5 in nearly every recruiting service.

One football note for today: Syracuse.com’s Nate Mink caught up with Syracuse commitTaylor Riggins as Aquinas opened its season at the Carrier Dome on Saturday. Rigginssays that he’s in the process of recruiting McQuaid Jesuit tight end Demetrius Breedlove, who is currently the No. 8 prospect in New York’s 2016 class according to 24/7 Sports.

That’s all for today, everyone. I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend.

Steve Miller Band Draws a Dome-Sized Crowd to Chevy Court Sunday Night (Review)

In front of one of the largest crowds I've ever seen at Chevy Court on Sunday night, a still crisp Steve Miller and his eponymous band led an all-out party for the NYS Fair.

Fair officials estimated a crowd of 36,900 packed into Chevy Court for the classic rock show. That number far exceeds the current attendance record of 35,000 at the Court, set during Bruno Mars' 2011 concert.

And how did the Fair come up with such a specific number at an un-ticketed, open-air concert? According to spokesman Dave Bullard, estimates are calculated using "standard formulas for computing the number of people per square foot, viewing from the crow's nests at [Chevy] Court."

Record-breaking crowd or not, Chevy Court swelled unlike any other night during this year's Fair. The roads alongside the lawn were clogged with people. Lines for beer at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que were outrageous. Onlookers filled the steps to the Center of Progress and Dairy Buildings.

Imagine if the crowd from a Syracuse-Duke basketball game emptied out of the Carrier Dome and all went to Chevy Court. That's what Sunday night was like.

That is AA candidate Brittney Sykes. Last I knew, she was still playing for the women's team...
I think we are looking at different pictures. I was joking about the 10 year old kid.

Cool. I think you are talking about team ambassador Nick Trivelpiece, who has been in that role since 2009. He is a pretty cool kid...
