Welcome to Bacon Day!

Are you sick and tired of celebrating the same old winter holidays?
Do you belong to a diverse group of individuals who all celebrate different gift-giving December holidays?
Are you sick and tired of having different Christmas/Chanukah/Solstice/Kwanzaa/Tom Waits' birthday celebrations?
Do you just flat out love bacon?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are soooo in luck. There is a holiday just for you.
The name? Bacon day!
When is Bacon Day? Dec. 30th of every year!

Tyler Roberson After Pitt Assaulted Him Multiple Times Last Season

Syracuse vs Pitt: 5 Things to Watch (PS; phtogallery; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange (10-3) will take on the Pittsburgh Panthers (10-1) in the ACC opener for both teams on Wednesday night at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers have a 215-32 record in their home arena. Syracuse dealt Pitt its first loss ever at the Pete back in the 2003-04 season. The Orange won again in the 2013-14 season on Tyler Ennis' last-second shot from 35 feet out. The game is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. on ESPN2.

The Case From Giving Frankie Howard More Minutes (TNIAAM; Burke)

Welcome to another Tuesday edition of this column. As a general rule of thumb going forward, I will continue to post these stories on Mondays, except for when Syracuse plays on Sunday. During those weeks, the column will run on Tuesday, since a couple of the sites I consult typically don't update until the day after games.

Today, we look closer at the case for giving more minutes to Franklin Howard, Trevor Cooney's improvement and Syracuse's defense.

The case for more of Franklin Howard

Franklin Howard has seen his playing time increase considerably since Mike Hopkins took over as SU's interim coach in place of the suspended Jim Boeheim. After never playing more than nine minutes in a game under Boeheim, Howard has done so three times in six games with Hopkins at the helm.

In the Orange's two most recent games — against Montana State and Texas Southern — Howard saw his two highest minutes totals of the season. He tallied three points, three rebounds and five assists in 18 minutes against Montana State before scoring six points and registering three steals in 19 minutes against Texas Southern.

In those two games, Syracuse was plus-20 with Howard on the court. In each game, Howard played substantial minutes in place of Malachi Richardson in Syracuse's most effective lineup — that is, Howard frequently played alongside Trevor Cooney, Michael Gbinije, Tyler Roberson and Tyler Lydon.

In 12 minutes and 12 seconds of action, that lineup outscored Syracuse's opponents, 39-22, in those two games. Comparatively, that same lineup with Richardson in place of Howard outscored SU's opponents, 31-17, in 17 minutes and 43 seconds.

How CNY Man Used 'Star Wars The Force Awakens' to Raise $9000 for Make-A-Wish (PS; video; Adams)

Chip Hodgkins, who works as a real estate broker with Hunts and Associates, has a long history with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. With every sale that his company does, they donate $100 to the nonprofit.

When Hodgkins found out that, 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' was being released, he came up with a plan to rent out a movie theater, charge admission to the film and along with a few sponsors, he was able to donate all the proceeds to the Make-A Wish Foundation of CNY.

The grand total came close to $9,000.

Diane Kuppermann, the CEO of Make-A-Wish, Central New York said that the average cost of a wish is approximately $10,000. With a bright smile, she said, "A wish involves whatever the child's imagination is. Children typically wish for one of four things which is to have something, to meet someone, to go somewhere or to be something."

She then added, "Make a wish started with a little boy who wanted to be a police officer so whether it's so simple or extravagant, the most important thing is what the child is wishing for at a time when they need to think of anything other than being sick."

Thanks to Chip's generosity and the wild popularity of 'Star Wars: A Force Awakens,' another child will receive their wish.

The Year in Rear View (syracusenewtimes.com; Kramer)
Sick of year-end stories? Me too. Oh, well. Enjoy!

January: Madly in love, Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney and Gov. Andrew Cuomo propose a $500 million, 44,000-seat stadium for their wedding. Peeved about not being invited to the bridal shower, city of Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner scuttles the project, asserting, “Joanie’s bridesmaid dresses look like a cat threw up on them.” Joanie replies: “Andrew and I will just build a taxpayer-financed amphitheater and get married there.” Stephanie gets “emotional.”

February: The average temperature is 9 degrees. Seriously. Tragedy is averted when a Winterfest patron admiring an ice sculpture realizes that it’s actually state Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball, who has frozen solid while addressing the Agriculture Society. Thawed by first responders, Ball resumes discussing Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus. The audience applauds wildly.

In a noble act of self-sacrifice, Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud and Coach Jim Boeheim ban the blameless basketball team from post-season play.

March: The NCAA hits Syracuse basketball with still harsher penalties, requiring the entire coaching staff to attend every home football game. Boeheim appeals, calling the penalty “an affront to human decency.”

Two SU scholars are charged in a fraternity hazing incident that nearly costs a third SU scholar four fingers after he is forced to do calisthenics in the snow without gloves. Critics blame Chancellor Syverud for closing the Frostbite Outreach Clinic.

April: Tiffany Pollard, a reality TV personality from Utica, has her “saggy and disgusting” breast implants repaired on the showBotched. Pep Boys offers free maintenance for the first 12,000 miles.
