SU Spring Football Preview: the RBs (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Syracuse has lots of running backs, but do they have enough carries to go around?
Who's on campus?

Looking strictly at running backs (according to last year's distinction),Jordan Fredericks, George Morris II and Devante McFarlane are your returning scholarship players. Walk-on Jacob Hill's also back, though it would seem unlikely he sees playing time like he did last year.

On top of those names, you'll probably want to add most of the "H-backs" from last year to play as either running backs, slot receivers or a hybrid of the two (no, that term "hybrid" is not returning). So go ahead and welcomeErvin Philips and Dontae Strickland to the conversation. Tyrone Perkinsis probably in that group as well, as is 2016 early enrollee Moe Neal.

Who's arriving this summer?

Pennsylvania 3-star Jo-El Shaw, who's likely to fill the much-needed role of short-yardage back. Syracuse has been without it since Doug Marrone's "tank package" vanished, which at least explains part of the team's red zone issues.

After Weekend Visit, Two More Cass Tech Players Receive Offers from SU (TNIAAM; Gilberg)

Syracuse hosted several players this weekend from Cass Technical, a national powerhouse prep school in Michigan, for a visit. After already offering scholarships to multiple 2017 recruits from Cass Tech, head coach Dino Babers and his staff decided to get an early start on the 2018 class by offering sophomores Kalon Gervin and DeAndre Square scholarships to play for the Orange.

Gervin's most common position is at cornerback, but he is very versatile as he's listed as an athlete on both ESPN and Rivals. Gervin stands at 5"11 and 170 pounds. His most important attribute, however, is his speed. The sophomore cornerback reportedly ran a 4.38 40-yard dash, according to Scout – which would make him one of the fastest high school defenders in the country. Syracuse will face tremendous competition for Gervin's services due to the fact he's already received offers from 11 schools, including Michigan, Penn State, and Pittsburgh.

Local Gourmet Olive Oil Shop Opens Third Location in Three Years, This Time in Clay (PS; Cazentre)

In 2012, when Michelle Watts opened her first shop selling specialty or gourmet olive oils and vinegars, she was making a big leap of faith. "I didn't really know how or if it would work out," she said.

But Olive on Brooklea, at 205 Brooklea Drive, proved successful -- so much so that Watts opened a second location in October 2015 at 116 W. Jefferson St. in Armory Square.

Now Watts is opening her third location: It's in the Marketfair North plaza on Route 31 in Clay, near Interstate 481 and across from Great Northern Mall. The grand opening is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

She did not foresee opening three shops in just a little more than three years.

"I didn't see any of this,'' she said. "And yet I did think there was a niche."

That niche is filled mostly by olive oils and balsamic vinegars, with some other gourmet items thrown in.

The oils range from "plain" extra virgin to oils with varying flavors and infusions. Some are made from other source than olive, like the Butternut Squash Seed Oil.

Some infusions are fairly basic, like Lemon, Tarragon or Basil. Others are more exotic: Baklouti Green Chili, Persian Lime, Black Truffle, and Roasted Pumpkin Seed.

The other main part of the business is Balsamic vinegars, both dark and white, in flavors such as Lavender, Fig, Pomegranate, Cranberry Pear, Lemongrass Mint, and Coconut.

Congratulations to Coach Lea, a great guy who was a blast to play with in the annual Orange Club golf outing, and who was also great to my friend Orangeyes. Good luck in Winston-Salem Coach!

Coach Lea is a great guy who truly enjoyed his CNY experience.
