Welcome to Vietnam Veterans Day!

Vietnam Veterans Day commemorates the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and their families and is part of a national effort to recognize the men and women who were denied a proper welcome upon returning home more than 40 years ago.

Most states celebrate “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” on March 29 or 30 of each year. Though there is some debate, March 29 is generally viewed as a more appropriate date, as it marks the final withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam in 1973. It is also the date President Nixon chose for the first Vietnam Veterans Day in 1974.

The chart below contains enacted legislation and resolutions from 41 states and Puerto Rico to designate a Vietnam Veterans Day.

Jake Moreland Back in Familiar Territory on Air Force's Football Staff (gazette.com; Briggerman)

Jake Moreland knew the lay of the land when he took a job this offseason as an Air Force football assistant.

And that can be taken literally.

"We know exactly where we want to live," said Moreland, the Falcons' new wide receivers coach. "That's the best part. We have kids who are in school now and we want to give them the best opportunity at the best schools, so we know pretty much right where we want to be.

"The familiarity is really nice."

Moreland is a new hire, but he's not at all new to Air Force football. He spent three years coaching tight ends for the Falcons before leaving last year for Syracuse. When a coaching change there left him looking for work, an opening on coach Troy Calhoun's staff allowed him to boomerang right back.

Pierce had been arrested on drug charges in 2011 and sentenced in 2013, but was granted probation.

It's unclear why he was wanted by police.

Lake Effect Snow This Weekend in Upstate NY? The Answer My Friends, Is Blowing in the Wind (PS; Coin)

The winter that never really started in Central New York now wants to make a last-minute return.

The shifting polar vortex will bring cold temperatures to the region over the weekend -- cold enough to generate lake effect snow over warm Lake Ontario. The wind speed and direction will determine where that snow falls, and how much.

"There's no doubt it's getting colder this weekend, and the air is cold enough for there to be lake effect snow this weekend," said Tom Kines, an Accuweather meteorologist. "Wind direction is the key, and that's kind of a question mark right now."

Winds blowing from the west, for example, would dump snow on Tug Hill; winds from the northwest would push that snow toward Syracuse. Kines cautioned that forecasts can change during the week as more information comes in.

Lake effect snow can form when the difference of the lake temperature and air about 1 mile high is at least 23 degrees. That gap could be 35 degrees Sunday: Lake Ontario is about 40 degrees right now, and atmospheric temperatures could fall to 5 degrees.

The National Weather Service said the air will be so cold it could create near-record low temperatures in Upstate New York for early April.

"Daytime highs next Sunday Monday could be held in the 20s, with nighttime lows in the teens," the Buffalo weather service office said in its forecast discussion. "This could also result in lake effect snows as lake temps are already pushing 40 degrees,"

The cold air likely won't last long, nor will any snow.
