Welcome to Manatee Appreciation Day!

Manatees are aquatic mammals known for their immense size and jowly appearance. Manatees might not make the list of cutest animals, but enough manatee enthusiasts exist for there to be a Manatee Appreciation Day.

Manatee Appreciation Day is devoted to raising awareness about these quirky creatures. Unfortunately, manatees are endangered. Although hunting manatees is usually illegal, they continue to be poached for their meat and hide. Also, manatees are often fatally injured in collisions with boats. It is important to increase manatee awareness so that these fascinating animals will continue to exist in the future.

SU Spring Football Preview 2016: How Will Riley Dixon Be Replaced? (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

A fan base weeps for its departed hero...

This is the last week of Syracuse Orange football practice before the much-anticipated spring game on Saturday, April 2. Obviously you've got plans that day... we'll get to that tomorrow. But we still need to talk about one more position group before all of that.

Today's topic: How does SU special teams replace Riley Dixon?

Who's on campus?

Your next Orange special teams legend (hopefully) Sterling Hofrichter, who redshirted last season. Kicker Cole Murphy and long snapper Matt Keller return as starters. The team also has a couple reserve specialists on the roster, such as Alex Grossman (kicker) and Nathan Hines (long snapper).

Over on the return teams, Brisly Estime -- who received an honorable mention on last year's All-ACC team -- will be manning both punts and kicks again. Dontae Stricklandreturned some kicks as well last year, and could do so again.

Who's arriving this summer?

Nobody, unless Babers adds a walk-on punter or something to back up Hofrichter.

Who's NOT here anymore?

(sobs)

Riley Dixon, his Heisman campaign and his various feats of strength are no longer members of the Syracuse roster. He'll take those talents to whichever NFL team is smart enough to draft him or pick him up as a free agent. He will be sorely missed in both spirit and actual play. Despite his status as a folklore hero, he was also a pretty good punter and you'd have to think he deserves a shot to give it a go in the pro game.

Penn State to Host 2018 OL Chris Bleich (pennlive.com; Pickel)

Penn State won't get back onto the practice field until Wednesday, but there are plenty of nuggets to know between practices.

The program wrapped up spring practice No. 6 on Monday, and is ever closer to the halfway point of spring ball.

Today's news and notes are below.

Bleich ready to visit

Penn State has hosted a few Bradenton, Fla., IMG Academy prospects this winter, and on Wednesday, it will host another one.

Former Wyoming Valley West prospect and 6-foot-5, 310 pound class of 2018 prospectChris Bleich will see campus then. Only Syracuse has offered to date, but more are destined to come flying in as schools get a look at him this spring and summer.

"I would like to see how the new o-line coach interacts with the players, and to see the changes in the facilities," Bleich told PennLive when asked what he wanted to see most.

Cheers: Actor Kelsey Grammer Plans to Open a Brewery in the Catskills (newyorkupstate.com; Cazentre)

Note: This story has been updated with the brewery name and location.

Actor Kelsey Grammer -- who shot to stardom in the 1980s as a barfly on the TV sitcom "Cheers" -- plans to open a brewery on a farm in Upstate New York's Catskill Mountains.

News of the project came via a Facebook posting by Paul Leone, executive director of the New York State Brewers Association. Leone posted a photo of himself and Grammer holding a T-shirt with the NYSBA logo. "Hey, look who's opening a brewery in New York State," Leone wrote.

Leone said the brewery is in the "Initial stages of planning," and will be named Faith American Brewing Co., after Grammer's youngest daughter. Faith is also "a word that means a lot to him guiding his own life," Leone said.

The brewery will be located in Margaretville, a village on the northern edge of the Catskill Park, Leone said.
