Welcome to National Garlic Day!

A SHORT HISTORY OF GARLIC
Native to central Asia, garlic has a lengthy history dating back 6,000 years. Long a staple of Mediterranean diets, garlic was a commonly used seasoning in the cuisines of Africa, Asia and Europe. China is currently the world’s biggest producer of garlic followed by India, South Korea, Egypt and Russia.

Regarded as a force of both good and evil, the Egyptians are said to have fed the herb to workers building the Great Pyramid of Giza because they believed it boosted their stamina. In the Middle Ages, plague-phobic Europeans ate whole cloves of garlic to fight off the scourge known as the Black Death.

Syracuse Football Attendance Will be Up in 2016: Here is Why (TNIAAM; Weinheimer)

With so many unknowns heading into the fall for the Syracuse Orange football season, it can be anyone's guess what kind of fan turnout we can expect for the six home games in the Carrier Dome. While some may think a new coach may attract larger crowds in his first season, only once out of the previous three Syracuse coaches were the attendance higher than the season before. Having said that, fans should look forward to an increase in attendance this season for three major reasons.

1) It really can't get any worse than last season.
This is the most obvious reason from the bunch. Last season was the lowest attended football season in Carrier Dome history. That's right, even lower than the final season of the Greg Robinson disaster. With interest in attendance at an all-time low, it stands to reason that the only direction is up for next season. Syracuse offers some of the most affordable tickets in major college football and if you combine that with a new brand of football, attendance should increase out of pure curiosity if nothing else.

2) Law of averages
Syracuse has a slate of games that have drawn well in the past 10 seasons. Aside from Virginia Tech, every team on the Orange's home schedule has been in the Dome at least once. I took the average attendance of each Syracuse opponent over the past ten years in the Dome and here's what I found (I didn't go any farther than 10 years back because frankly, teams older than that were a completely different program than where Syracuse football is today).

Rutgers Spring Football Recruiting Update: What to Do Now That DeVito Is Lost (nj.com; Hunt)

Rutgers went into the weekend having offered four class of 2017 quarterbacks to run offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer's new power spread offense.

One of the four, Tommy DeVito, a 6-2, 190-pound junior from Don Bosco (Ramsey, N.J.), is off the board as the three-star recruit committed to Syracuse over the weekend. And although Rutgers coveted the pro-set quarterback, his style wasn't necessarily ideal for the offensive identity Rutgers looks to move towards in the future.

However, help could be on the way as, according to a source, St. Peter's Prep's (Jersey City, N.J.) three-star dual-threat Johnathan Lewis, could decide within the next couple weeks. Originally, Lewis had planned to decide closer to the 2016 season, but with so many quarterbacks making their commitments throughout the country, it's lit a fire underneath him. And it makes sense, as quarterback recruiting is different than any other position as only one can play at a time. Rutgers is the perceived destination for the 6-3, 205-pounder who also holds offers from Georgia, Boston College, Temple, Iowa and Wake Forest.

British Airways Flight Possibly Collides with Drone Over London (PS; Tampone)

Authorities are investigating after a passenger jet was apparently hit over the weekend by a drone as it approached London's Heathrow Airport.

The British Airways flight was landing when the pilot said he thought a drone had struck the front of the plane, according to CNN.

The jet, an Airbus A320, landed safely and none of the 132 passengers or five crew members were hurt, CNN said.

Engineers examined the plane and it was able to proceed on its next flight. Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch is investigating.

Police said it's unclear whose drone may have hit the plane, according to CNN. No arrests have been made.

If a drone strike is confirmed, it would be the first such incident in the U.K., according to the BBC.

The collision occurred when the plane was about 1,700 feet over an area of southwest London, the BBC said.

One British official said the incident highlights the " very real dangers of reckless, negligent and sometimes malicious use of drones."
