Welcome to National High Five Day!

Each year on the third Thursday in April, we observe National High Five Day. This is a fun day where you can “High Five” everyone that you see.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Use #NationalHighFiveDay to post on social media.

HISTORY

In 2002, college students at the University of Virginia, Conor Lastowka (San Diego, CA), Sam Miotke (Corvallis, OR) and Wynn Walent (New York, NY) together created National High Five Day, an unofficial national holiday.

Big Takeaways from Dino Babers on ACC Football Coaches Teleconference (TNIAAM; Gilberg)

It was the first time Babers spoke to the media since Naesean Howard allegedly stabbed former teammates Chauncey Scissum and Corey Winfield.

Despite only being on the line for 10 minutes, newSyracuse Orange football head coach Dino Babers addressed several various topics while appearing on the 2016 ACC Football Coaches Spring Media Teleconference Wednesday.

While he attempted to keep the conversation mostly about football and his players' development, he did answer a few questions regarding the recent incident involving former Syracuse player Naesean Howard allegedly stabbing ex-teammates, and current players, Chauncey Scissum and Corey Winfield.

"Rebirth"

In his opening remarks, Babers said he was very impressed with the team throughout the spring, saying players did a "fantastic" job trying to learn and adopt to an entirely new system. "I thought the entire spring period was a rebirth, trying to teach new offenses and new defenses to these young men" Babers said.

Babers, however, reiterated his stance once more that the job is not done yet. "We've got a lot of growth that we need to move forward with, with this football team...Once we get them back in two-a-days we'll try to find out exactly where we're at and what we're capable of doing in the fall."

Academic Progress Rate: Syracuse Continues Improvement in Latest Four-Year Report (TNIAAM; Orsenigo & Cassillo)

...
The NCAA released its Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for the 2014-15 season on Wednesday, and the Syracuse sports teams are looking pretty good.

You, like many people, may feel that the APR is a ridiculous program in a sea of ridiculous policies implemented by the NCAA. Regardless of your feelings on APR, the fact is that it is a metric used by the NCAA, and it does matter for the continued postseason participation of Syracuse's sports teams. Here's a quick refresher on how APR works:

In order to maintain next year's postseason eligibility (2016-17), a team must maintain an APR score above 930 for a four-year period, or above 940 for a two-year period. The good news for Syracuse is that every one of their teams had a score in this year's report of at least 960.

Let's take a look at how each Syracuse team performed in this year's four-year APR scores, going in descending order (with ACC ranking in parentheses):

Women's Soccer: 1,000 -- a perfect score (1/14)
Women's Cross Country: 997 (6/15)
Women's Basketball: 996 (2/15)
Men's Cross Country: 996 (5/14)
Women's Volleyball: 994 (9/15)
Women's Lacrosse: 993 (7/8)
Men's Track and Field: 993 (5/15)
Women's Rowing: 992 (3/9)
Women's Track and Field: 989 (9/15)
Women's Softball: 987 (8/11)
Women's Tennis: 983 (13/15)
Women's Ice Hockey: 983 (4/5) *CHA
Men's Lacrosse: 981 (4/5)
Men's Basketball: 980 (8/15)
Football: 973 (7/15)
Men's Soccer: 963 (10/12)
Field Hockey: 960 (7/7)

2017 WR Verbal Daewood Davis Flips From Orange to...FAU? (TNIAAM; Ross)

Another domino has fallen on the Syracuse Orange football recruiting trail this week, only this time in the wrong direction. At their request, this network is being blocked from this site.'s Corey Benderwas first to report that 2017 wide receiver Daewood Davis flipped his college commitment from the Orange to the Owls of Florida Atlantic.

The 6-foot-2, 170 pound Davis, who lives less than an hour away from FAU in Hollywood, Fla, holds a three-star rating from 247Sports.com and was the first player to commit to the football class of 2017 back in June, when Scott Shafer was still the head coach. Despite his original commitment, however, he was still open to talking to and visiting other schools.

"I chose FAU because I see their vision of building another dominant football program in Florida," Davis told TNIAAM via Twitter direct message. "I also chose FAU because I wanted to be close to home."

With Davis's flip, that leaves Syracuse with three commitments for 2017 in QB Tommy DeVito, WR Sharod Johnson, and LB Isaiah McDuffie. Three commitments doesn't seem like a lot, but there is a long way to go between now and National Signing Day 2017.

Students at Troy College Plan Topless Protest Over Police Treatment of Student (PS; Tampone)

Students at a Troy college are planning to go topless today to protest treatment of a student who identifies as androgynous, according to the Albany Times Union.

The incident occurred Sunday when a college security officer approached Cedar Brock, who was sunbathing topless in a public park along the Troy campus of The Sage Colleges.

The officer asked if Brock was a boy or girl and Brock responded "neither."

"I'm androgynous," Brock said, according to the Times Union.

The interaction led to a standoff that eventually involved Troy police, who insisted that Brock put on a shirt and told the student that city law forbids women from going topless in public.

Brock initially refused to put on a shirt, but did so after about 10 minutes. Troy police arrived on the scene shortly after initial contact with the Sage officer, the Times Union said.

- As the details of the satellite camp vote come out, it continues to be extremely strange, and now we have more twists.

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said their representative, UCLA AD Dan Guerrero, did not vote the way he was supposed to vote, as the other 11 schools were against the ban. Guerrero told SI it was believed the issue would be tabled, but when it instead came up for a vote, he favored the ACC’s off-campus ban in order to block the SEC’s ban outside of 50 miles.

Last week, it was revealed that Texas State AD Larry Teis voted against the camps, despite the majority of the Sun Belt schools (including his own coach) being in favor of them. Had Guerrero and Teis sided with their majorities, the ban wouldn’t have passed.

What a mess. This issue is expected to come up at the April 28 board of directors meeting, and ESPN reports schools are working on getting enough votes to change it. The fact that this happened with little feedback or organization is a bad look. Tommy Tuberville said last week he believes the ban will be tabled. We’ll see.

Two of the biggest observations to come out of the University of Miami camp is that:

1) Mark Richt has made a wonderful first impression on former players.

2) The current Hurricanes lack depth and the loss of a player in a vulnerable area will mess up their 2016 season.

On the last weekend of the Hurricanes’ spring practices and scrimmages, Miami invites former players to take part in an alumni gathering Friday before the Saturday scrimmage. That includes coaches. Howard Schnellenberger, who coached Richt and won Miami’s first national championship, said his former player has brought an enthusiasm and energy he hasn’t seen in the program the past few years.

Darin McMurray, who played with Richt his final two seasons, said he’s same person who treated freshmen well when he was a junior. “Great teammate and a great leader,” he said. More than 200 players attended Friday’s dinner and social and again, Richt made a great impression.

“He led us in prayer and said this is the start of us coming together,” McMurray said. “He had current players sitting with former players. And he said, ‘I will be here until everyone leaves.’ When we left, we were ready to run through the tunnel, even though most of us can’t anymore. People are very excited with what he’s going to do at Miami.”

McMurray also senses the current players will respect Richt. After Saturday’s spring scrimmage, Richt huddled with them afterwards and told them to keep their grades up and stay out of trouble. The reason is simple: He just doesn’t think his team has a lot of quality back-ups yet.

“I think our biggest issue is depth, really,” he said. “When you play two and three teams, you think, ‘Oh, we look so thin.’ When all you need is one team out there, the depth feels more comfortable. If we stay healthy and take care of our business in the offseason, we’ll be fine. But we get injuries in a couple of spots, it’ll hurt. We’re not as strong as we need to be with numbers.”

The No. 1 spot Miami can’t lose a player is Brad Kaaya. He’s not only one of the nation’s best quarterbacks but there’s a big gap between he and his back-ups. If he goes down, the season could be a disaster. Malik Rosier, who filled in well in a game at Duke, appears to have regressed. Offensive tackle and cornerback are other areas where depth is low.

The area that pleased Richt the most is that he felt players responded well to him and his coaching staff. Of Richt, Kaaya said he couldn’t see himself finishing his career with a better coach. “They didn’t bow their neck at anything,” he said. “They took coaching and guidance. They tried to do what we’re asking them to become.”

OK that was weird. I saw Cuse at#6 and PSU at #10. Now I don't. Must be my recurring acid trips.

We're 6th in the "Capital One Cup" (6th for Men, and tied for 5th for Women).

Two different things.

The Learfield Cup ranks each school, while the Capital One Cup ranks Men's and Women's sports separately, and both use different scoring systems.

Those Learfield standings are only for Winter sports. If you added in the success of SU's Fall season sports (soccer F4, X-C and field hockey NC's), SU would be much higher.

So, I'm now curious as to why the two ratings are so unalike. Certainly, 5th and 6th would cumulatively put you within the top 5. Are the methodologies of the two that different?

IR must mean "Inside Receiver".

That's probably why Babers had two different WR coaches at Bowling Green.
