Welcome to Morse Code Day!

It’s Morse Code Day! Time to use a little Morse code. If all you know is . . . _ _ _ . . . (SOS), then today is the day to learn a bit more. In 1836, Samuel Morse, Joseph Henry, and Alfred Vail developed the telegraph, a system that sends electrical pulses along a wire over long distances.

To make full use of this invention, Morse and Vail slowly invented a special code of dots and dashes that could be easily translated into letters and numbers. Since then, Morse code has been used for all sorts of communications over the telegraph, through casual tapping in every spy movie, and by flashing lights on ships.

Syracuse Plans 'Orange Out' For Louisville Game. Also, Every Other Game. Really. (TNIAAM; Keeley)

Orange fans are urged to wear, uh, orange on September 9 when SU plays Louisville. SU Athletics is also looking for designs for the official Orange Out t-shirt.

Hey Syracuse Orange fans, break out your orange that you're already wearing because we've got us a good old-fashioned Orange Out on September 9 when the Louisville Cardinals come to town.

Orange will be the color of the day when the Syracuse football team hosts Louisville in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener Friday, Sept. 9 at the Carrier Dome. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite orange 'Cuse gear for an 'Orange Out' against the Cardinals.

To celebrate the occasion, all Syracuse fans are invited to submit designs for the official 'Orange Out' t-shirt. The winning design will be chosen in an online vote in July, and the T-shirts will be available for purchase at participating retail stores in August. Details on the contest and instructions on how to submit designs will be announced soon.

There's nothing essentially new about Syracuse Athletics calling for an Orange Out for an upcoming football game. We will, however, note that this is happening in April and not the week before the game happens, which is how it had usually been done in recent years. So, progress is progress.

As an example, last year's Orange Out was against Wake Forest, a game that took place on September 12. The very first mention of an Orange Out on Cuse.com comes up as September 3.

Rosario raking

Mets shortstop prospect Amed Rosario, who played five games (including postseason) with the B-Mets at the end of last season, went into Tuesday night batting .301 with two doubles, four triples, two home runs and a .529 slugging percentage in 18 games for Single-A St. Lucie.

Rosario continues to be an aggressive swinger at the plate. He walked just three times and struck out 15 in those 18 games. Despite a .301 batting average, his on-base percentage is just .329.

Baseball America ranked Rosario the top position player prospect in the Mets’ farm system and the 58th-best prospect in Minor League Baseball.

Boeheim in Binghamton

Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim and football coach Dino Babers will participate in a meet and greet with fans at NYSEG Stadium on May 18. They’ll also each throw out a first pitch prior to the start of the game.

The visit will be part of the “No Huddle Tour’ Syracuse University athletics is conducting this summer to connect with Alumni around the state. The tour will also make stops in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse in May.

Vintage: CNY Amusement Parks of Days Gone By: How Many Do You Remember? (photogallery; PS)

The Comet roller coaster at Suburban Park in Manlius in 1975, two years after the park closed.

The coaster was ready for use in 1925.

To entice riders, the maiden voyage of the Comet would be free. Children quickly hopped aboard. Unfortunately, the operators could not slow the roller coaster, and the children roared over the course six or seven times. One rider told the Post-Standard in 2000, “They were adjusting the brake system. We were getting sick. I thought I was going to die. When I got off, I said, 'That's the end of it. Never again.'

Is that the Comet now at Six Flags Great Escape?
To answer my own question - apparently not.

The coaster started its existence at Crystal Beach (an amusement park near Fort Erie, Ontario) as a ride known as the Cyclone in 1927. The Cyclone was known as a fearsome coaster which often injured its riders. This apparently occurred so often that there was a permanent first aid station at the end of the ride. Its metal support structure was torn down and rebuilt as the Comet in 1947. The ride was saved shortly after the park closed down forever after the 1989 season. Charlie Woods, the owner of The Great Escape in Queensbury, New York successfully bid for The Comet and it sat in storage for a few years in Fantasy Island before making its way to the park in Queensbury where it began service again.

There's a few other teams that should be following their lead. Not all the non- Power 5 schools, but some of them are obviously wasting time and money.

There are a bunch of schools that do not meet the 15K minimum for attendance to stay at the BCS level and are in acute danger of shutting down or demoting their football programs.

Eastern Michigan had to release a public statement just this week saying they are keeping their football program around in response to a lot of speculation and criticism.

Other MAC schools are in similar predicaments.
