Welcome to World Tuna Day!

In 2011, the eight Pacific Island countries that comprise much of the world's tuna fishing waters declared May 2 to be World Tuna Day. Today marks the very first—a time for global celebration of these amazing fish and a reminder of the need to conserve them.

From the gigantic, warm-blooded, 1,500-pound (680-kilogram) Atlantic bluefin to the smallest skipjack, the label “tuna” actually includes more than 20 species that range from the tropics to the frigid waters of the Arctic and the Southern Ocean.

World Tuna Day recognizes the critical role these fish play in marine ecosystems. They support some of the world's largest and most valuable fisheries, as well as many people who rely on them for their livelihoods.

SU Target CJ Holmes Among the Stand-Outs at The Opening Regional in NJ (pennlive.com; Pickel)

...
  • Some suspect that Philadelphia St. Joe's RB D'Andre Swift won't consider PSU because of its loaded running back depth chart, but the five-star and top player in PA said that isn't true. "I love competition," he said, adding he talks to receivers coach Josh Gattis and backs coach Charles Huff often. Florida State, Georgia, and Alabama have all picked up their interest of late.
  • Cheshire, Conn., Academy three-star athlete CJ Holmes has a top three: Syracuse, Penn State, and Tennessee, in no particular order. PSU likes him as a safety, the other two as a running back, and Holmes said he'd like to play offense but would consider playing defense. Among many factors, his future position will likely lead him to the school he chooses.
  • Here's a 2018 prospect to watch you may not know of yet but should: Jahan Dotson. He's a key cog in Nazareth's offense, and over 10 schools have offered. Penn State is certainly interested.

Chris Beatty, Once Headed to SU Football Coaching Staff, On 'Torrid' Recruiting Run for Maryland (PS; Mink)

Syracuse football, in a clear attempt to expand its recruiting efforts in the so-called DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) region, is working a camp next month at Old Dominion.

That recruiting region is among the most fertile outside the Sun Belt, and it's one of the territories Syracuse coach Dino Babers and his staff want to infiltrate. The most recent impact player SU landed from that area was safety Shamarko Thomas, who is among the top defensive players for the program in the last decade.

Part of that recruiting formula once included assistant coach Chris Beatty, who was set to join Babers' staff before accepting a position at Maryland for personal reasons.

Well, there is good reason Babers sought Beatty. He's on a "torrid" recruiting start for the Terps, per 247Sports.com, and recently landed the program's third five-star verbal commitment in the last decade.

In addition to defensive end Josh Kaindoh, of IMG Academy (Fla.), Beatty is the primary recruiter for four-star defensive tackle Cam Spence, also of IMG Academy, and four-star quarterback Kasim Hill, who Syracuse recruited.

As the 247Sports article notes, Maryland has taken a more unified approach to recruiting under first-year coach D.J. Durkin.

SU Football Players Set Sights on NFL (localsyr.com)

Syracuse University punter Riley Dixon was selected in the seventh round (No. 228 overall) by the Denver Broncos on Saturday in the NFL Draft— but he isn’t the only Orange player looking to play professionally.

Former Orange defensive end Ron Thompson and cornerback Julian Whigham have agreed to terms with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills, respectively, as undrafted free agents.

Rob Trudo, former offensive lineman, received an invitation to attend rookie minicamp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Scouting Report: Bronco's Seventh-Round Pick Riley Dixon (bsndenver.com; Simone)

Riley Dixon, Punter, Syracuse, (6-foot-4, 220 pounds)

With their last pick in the draft’s seventh-round the Broncos picked Riley Dixon, the Syracuse punter who was second-team All-ACC (this guy wasn’t the best punter in his own conference!) and not the unanimous second best Punter in the class (for most people that was Utah’s Tom Hackett, more on him in a second). On the surface, when I saw the pick I was very skeptical, if not downright pessimistic. For starters he’s a punter, you typically can pick up a punter as an undrafted free-agent and he’ll be a top-three talent in the class. Secondly, because it’s not good draft value to take a punter any time in the draft. When the Broncos selected Dixon with their last pick there, was still lots of talent still left on the board, several of which were players with starter ability in positions of need (most importantly inside linebacker). So first impressions were negative, but that was all on paper.

Once I started to dig into Riley Dixon, I found out that first and foremost he’s a cult hero to Syracuse football fans, with even a half-assed Heisman campaign being started for him. He’s a true legend for some Cuse fans and not just because of his punting (please, I beg you, click on this video it’s the greatest punter highlight tapeyou’ll ever see. You won’t regret it, I promise). Dixon, at a certain point, has a perfect 100-percent conversion rate on fake punts and field goals where he was asked to run or even pass the ball. He isn’t built like a punter and looks more like a tall receiver and has the athleticism to match (see his hurdle against LSU!), he was a true trick play weapon for Syracuse. Dixon is also an extremely reliable holder with good hands who can handle awkward snaps, the added element of surprise that he has as a runner and passer is a bonus in those situations also, making him a true special teams ace.

Texans Add Speed with Undrafted Rookie Wendall Williams (chron.com; Wilson)

The theme of the Texans' draft was built around one recurring intention: become a faster football team.

And that trend extended beyond drafting speedy wide receivers Will Fuller and Braxton Miller in the first round and third round.

The Texans reached a free agent deal with undrafted University of the Cumberlands rookie wide receiver and return specialist Wendall Williams.

Williams created a buzz in the NFL scouting community when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.19 seconds and had a 45-inch vertical leap at an NFL regional combine in Minnesota. Although the hand time was later rounded up to 4.32 seconds on a laser time, it's still staggering speed from the NAIA track All-American.

Arizona Cardinals running back Chris Johnson ran a 4.24 six years ago for the fastest time in NFL scouting combine history.

The vertical leap would have tied the NFL scouting combine record shared by Donald Washington and Chris Conley.
