Welcome to National Crohn's and Colitis Day!

The first annual World Crohn's and Colitis Day (WCCD) was celebrated on May 23, 2007.[1] The event was created by Josh Golder and recognized by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, as well as by people from around the world. Josh is a prominent figure and activist in the Crohn's and Colitis community (who himself has Crohn's disease), who directed and produced the internationally known, community-wide movie, "True Guts: Struggle and Triumph over Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis" (which is more commonly known as "True Guts"). Josh created WCCD as a way to bring people affected by either disease together, as well as friends and family members of those individuals, and even those who knew nothing about either disease in order to increase awareness of them.

Jordan Fredericks Among Most Explosive Backs in FBS (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Syracuse Orange running back Jordan Fredericks was one of the country's most explosive running backs last season... when he got the opportunity, that is.

Today, Bill Connelly provided data on every rusher in college football from 2015, specifically honing in on each player's ability to generate highlight rushes (carries of at least five yards), how that stacked up against total carries and how many yards they gained on highlight rush opportunities.

Confused? Here's a better explanation of these metrics from Bill:

Opportunity Rate. This is the percentage of a runner's carries that gain at least five yards. Like, Success Rate, it is a decent measure of efficiency, though it is quite difficult to get at a runner's efficiency without in some way gauging the success and quality of the offensive line blocking for him.

Highlight Yards Per Opportunity. I use Opportunity Rate instead of Success Rate here because it meshes nicely with my explosiveness measure of choice: Highlight Yards Per Opportunity. Highlight Yards are the yards that aren't credited to the line per the Line Yardage formula; you divide that by highlight opportunities (i.e. the number of carries going at least five yards), and you get a pretty clean, easy way of looking at how big a runner's big plays are.

Combine these two measures, and you get a nice look at how frequently a runner was generating big-play opportunities and how big those big plays were. That's the essence of being a good running back, no?

ESPN ACC Position Unit Rankings: Summary (bloggersodear.com; Reinhard)

We complete our series of ESPN's ranking of ACC positional units by compiling each ranking and then assessing the overall strength of each team. What do the numbers look like for the Wake Forest football team?

Team Quarterback Running Back Receivers O-Line Avg. Offense Front Seven Secondary Avg. Defense Overall Avg.
Boston College 14 11 14 13 13 2 3 2.5 9.50
Clemson 1 4 1 2 2 4 4 4 2.67
Duke 8 10 8 8 8.5 12 8 10 9.00
Florida State 4 1 2 3 2.5 1 1 12.00
Georgia Tech 6 7 12 9 8.5 13 14 13.5 10.17
Louisville 2 9 4 7 5.5 3 2 2.5 4.50
Miami 3 6 6 5 5 10 10 10 6.67
North Carolina 5 3 3 4 3.75 9 5 7 4.83
North Carolina State 11 8 7 10 9 8 11 9.5 9.17
Pittsburgh 7 2 10 1 5 5 6 5.5 5.17
Syracuse 9 13 9 12 10.75 14 13 13.5 11.67
Virginia 13 12 13 11 12.25 11 9 10 11.50
Virginia Tech 10 5 5 6 6.5 6 7 6.5 6.50
Wake Forest 12 14 11 14 12.75 7 12 9.5 11.67

Based on these averages, which admittedly are not weighted, Wake Forest has the second worst offense in the conference, putting them just ahead of Boston College. They are also in the same neighborhood as Syracuse and Virginia. The good news for the Deacs? Wake Forest plays all three of those teams at BB&T Field this fall.

Defensively, Wake is projected to be better than Georgia Tech, Duke, Syracuse, Virginia, Miami, and similar to North Carolina State. Wake plays four of those six, which will be beneficial for Wake's offense.

Wake's ACC schedule sets up so that they really don't play an "average" ACC team. For the most part, they either play elite ACC teams like Clemson, Florida State, and Louisville, or they play the lower third of Boston College, Syracuse, and Virginia. Most of the middle of the pack teams are in the Coastal, which is why Wake has this schedule.

Wake is in the bottom third of the conference, but during the previous two years they were pretty clearly at the bottom. The Deacs have closed the gap, and I believe they are objectively better than a number of the other teams in the conference.

It will be fun to revisit these rankings in the fall to see how accurate they are. Wake is still a young team and returns the vast majority of impact players. Wake's rankings should only improve. This is a major year for the Wake football program, and Wake Forest has the schedule to get the results it desires.

Tunnel Construction Best Choice for I-81 Renovation (DO; Horn)

Nearly five decades ago, Interstate 81 decimated Syracuse’s prosperity by doing what magicians do best: sawing it in half.

The 3.75-mile stretch of road that divides the city is nearing the end of its lifespan and a decision about its future will need to be made in 2017. Proposals for the roadway are already being laid out and a special presentation in Syracuse by New York state Transportation Commissioner Matt Driscoll is scheduled for May 20. But the key in discussions regarding the future of I-81 should be taking into account the damage already rendered to the city and its residents from previous construction.

The rationale behind the highway certainly made sense considering it was aimed at developing and growing the city. With the 1956 Federal Highway Act, Syracuse received a $500 million bond, according to The Atlantic, to craft the elevated roadway that would link downtown to outlying regions of the metropolitan area. The fact that this highway would bisect the city and demolish multiple neighborhoods — most of which were largely African-American — was ignored by planners.

There are three options for what to do with the aging highway in need of renovation moving forward: build a new viaduct system similar to the current highway, do away with the viaduct and route traffic through a boulevard across Syracuse or construct a tunnel underneath the city and tear down the elevated highway entirely.

But there is no stand-out choice and the reality is that none of the proposals will magically fix the decades of strife that the roadway has caused residents. In the vigorous debate about what would be best for transit and city residents, the tunnel represents the best hope for benefiting both.
