Welcome to Heimlich Maneuver Day!

Choking is no joke. So how come the Heimlich Maneuver (also known as the Abdominal Thrust) is so funny? Is it because Heimlich sounds so much like Hind Lick?

Anyway, June 1 is Heimlich Maneuver Day. Made famous by the filmstrip shown in schools in the '70s and '80s, the one where a piece of chicken flies out of a boy's mouth after he starts choking at a picnic, the threat of getting Heimliched made us all chew our food a little more carefully.

American physician Henry Heimlich (snicker) invented his namesake maneuver in 1974, and the Heimlich was then made standard practice for helping choking victims by the American Red Cross. Not just for choking, the Maneuver is also commonly used on drowning victims before administering CPR.

According to Wikipedia, Henry Heimlich also promotes the very controversial and unproven practice of treating HIV by infecting the patient with malaria. I guess you can't win them all.

So let's give thanks to Henry Heimlich for inventing such an awesome maneuver! And here are a couple video guides to performing the Heimlich Maneuver and as a special bonus-- the Heimlich for dogs.

College Football Countdown: No. 86 Syracuse (orlandosentinel.com; Sonnone)

Orlando Sentinel college insider Matt Murschel ranked all 128 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the country entering the 2015-16 season. The Sentinel staff takes a closer look at a new team daily, counting backward from No. 128 to our projected No. 1 team.

Today at No. 86: Syracuse
Coach: Dino Babers (0-0, entering first season; 37-16 overall)
2015 record: 4-8 overall, 2-6 Atlantic Coast Conference; Fifth in ACC Atlantic)
Look back: Things began well enough for Syracuse, which opened the season 3-0 including wins against ACC foe Wake Forest and Central Michigan. The Orange then hung tough against LSU — ranked No. 8 nationally at the time — in a 34-24 defeat that sparked an eight-game losing streak. Syracuse finished 118th overall in total offense (310.5 yards per game) largely due to a slew of injuries at quarterback. Scott Shafer’s inability to put together a competent offensive attack in his three seasons at Syracuse ultimately factored in to his demise as the program’s head coach.
Offensive starters returning: 8
Offensive starters lost: 3
Defensive starters returning: 7
Defensive starters lost: 4
Key losses: QB Terrel Hunt, DE Ron Thompson, OL Rob Trudo, OL Ivan Foy, P Riley Dixon
Top returnees: WR Steve Ishmael, QB Eric Dungey, LB Zaire Franklin, WR Brisly Estime, RB Jordan Fredericks, OL Jason Emerich
Strengths: Syracuse’s lack of offensive production in recent years is somewhat baffling given the playmakers the Orange have at key positions.

Syracuse Football 2016 Opponent Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

The Syracuse Orange football season is approaching quicker than you think, which means we're full-speed ahead on preview materials for 2016. Lately, we've been taking an advanced look at our opponents, which are... still incredibly difficult. Each week (roughly), we'll take a look at a team on Syracuse's 2016 schedule. Today, we continue with the:

Virginia Tech Hokies
School: Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
Mascot: Hokies
#BRAND Slogan: "This Is Home."
Alternate #BRAND Slogan Suggestions: "Let's Be Frank (Beamer)." "Yeah, We'll Claim Mike Vick Again."
Recommended Blog(s): Gobbler Country, The Key Play
Conference: ACC
Coach: Justin Fuente, 1st year. Fuente represents the first coaching change for Virginia Tech football in decades, and with that comes the balancing act of establishing a new era while keeping the old success alive. Like his predecessor Beamer, however, Fuente has experience creating a culture. He comes to Blacksburg after four years at Memphis where he went 26-23, and won a share of a conference title with a top-25 ranking in 2014. Before that, he was at least partially responsible for the impressive TCU offenses of 2007-2011. He's one of several new, spread-focused additions to the ACC this fall.
2015 Record: (7-6) (4-4)
Recapping Last Season:
Frank Beamer's final season could've gone poorly -- and after a 3-5 start, it did seem like it was headed in that direction. Instead, the Hokies rallied for wins over Boston College, Georgia Tech and Virginia, then a fireworks show against Tulsa in the Independence Bowl. Despite an offense that had been spiraling toward ineptitude for several seasons on end, Tech bounced back in the final weeks of 2015 to average 38.5 points per game (including a 55-point output vs. the Golden Hurricane).

First Thoughts on Notre Dame Matchup with Syracuse (slapthesign.com; Vowles)

Once again, Notre Dame heads to a neutral site to play the Syracuse Orange.

This series feels much deeper than it actually is. Notre Dame and Syracuse have met only seven times, but four of those meetings have come in the past 13 years. Syracuse holds a respectable 3-4 record against Notre Dame with two of those wins coming in the last four meetings (a butt whipping in the Carrier Dome and an embarrassing disaster in 2008 at Notre Dame on senior day).

Instead of this game being played inside the unholy Carrier Dome, Syracuse (and mutually agreed upon Notre Dame) will play this game at the Meadowlands. yet another neutral site game for the Irish and despite Syracuse being the “home” team, Notre Dame will most undoubtedly have a much larger fanbase at the game than the Orange.

This begs the question… What the hell is Syracuse thinking? These type of games are right up Notre Dame’s alley, and the Irish feel quite comfortable in this role. Conversely, Notre Dame rarely plays in a dome (okay like never), and maybe that’s just enough to help the Orange.

That’s probably a bit of a stretch (the whole dome thing) but you have to wonder why Syracuse is selling its soul to try and be “New York’s college team.” Let me tell you something Syracuse… New York doesn’t really care.

Maybe the next time Notre Dame and Syracuse play against each other, and it’s an Orange “home game” maybe, just maybe it will be in the dome. Until then, Notre Dame fans will continue to take your “home game away from home” and turn it into their rental property for the night.

Tyler Thompson Excited for College Career at UMass (app.com; Edelson)

Perhaps all you need to know about Tyler Thompson is what happened on Sept. 12, 2015.

It was the Ocean running back's first game back after he suffered a shattered left leg that ended his junior season, and threw the heavily-recruited running back’s future into doubt. In that game, he ran for 175 yards, scored three touchdowns and forced a fumble that the Spartans recovered in the end zone.

Except that there’s so much more, as the 5-11, 200-pound running back prepares to head off to the University of Massachusetts to help the Minutemen as they strengthen their football competition by stepping up to the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) level.

Like the long hours Thompson spent rehabbing and training during the offseason to forge a comeback few, including himself at times, thought possible.

And the results were that performance in the Spartans' season-opening win over Neptune, and the 229 yards he gained against Manasquan, and the 195-yard effort against Monmouth in the final game of his career.

"I’m not going to lie, I thought I might be done,’’ said Thompson.

There isn’t a player who wouldn’t have doubts about their future with an injury like Thompson, who topped the 1,000-yard mark as a freshman and sophomore, suffered on Nov. 1 2014, in the final minutes of a game against Red Bank Catholic.
