Welcome to National Onion Rings Day!

National Onion Rings Day is an informal food holiday celebrating onion rings. The little-known, little-publicized holiday falls on June 22.1 It is not an official holiday recognized by governments or sponsored by a well-known organization or corporation.

Onion rings are a snack food, fast food, side dish or appetizer made from circles of sliced onion or onion paste, coated in a batter or breading, and fried.2 They are most well known in Western countries and a few Asian countries, where they are often served as part of fast food meals and sometimes restaurant meals.

It is not known who originally created onion rings or when. It is known that in 1933 a recipe for onion rings appeared in a Criscoshorteningadvertisement in ‘’The New York Times’’.3

The 5-foot-9, 167-pound receiver picked Syracuse over Charlotte, Bowling Green and the Orange’s Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia. He is ranked with three stars by and on 247Sports.com’s composite rankings system.

Syracuse Football: Orange Defense Ranks Top 10 in Returning Tackles (TNIAAM; Menefee)

The Syracuse defense will be a very experienced group heading into next season.

Last week we looked at Phil Steele's list of combined offensive line starts and the numbers exposed the inexperience that the Syracuse Orange will be dealing with at that position this season. Fortunately, Syracuse is experienced pretty much everywhere else on the field.

Phil's latest stat complication tallied up the percentage of tackles returning for all FBS teams, and the Orange came in at 81.09 percent of tackles returning, good for a 9th-best rank in the FBS.

This sounds even better when you compare it to last year, in which Syracuse was dead last in tackles returning at just 29.30 percent. For some perspective on how that may have affected last season, in 2014 the Orange defense averaged 349 yards per game and 24.3 points per game, while last season the Orange averaged 439 yards per game and 31.0 points allowed per game.

Get To Know Your Orange Man - No. 83 WR Sean Avant (TNIAAM; Orsenigo)

The redshirt junior wide receiver from Florida enters his fourth season as part of the Syracuse football program.

Name: Sean Avant
Position: Wide Receiver
Year: (Redshirt) Junior
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 210
Hometown: Miramar, Fla.
High School: Miramar
2015 Stats: Avant played in eight games for the Syracuse Orange last season, catching only four passes for a total of 37 yards.
2016 Projections: Avant was listed behind both Brisly Estime and Jacob Hill at one of the "inside receiver" positions on the post-spring depth chart released by Syracuse football. While this is an offense that will require a lot of personnel at the skill positions due to its fast pace, Avant does have two players in front of him at his position, and that doesn't even include the other "inside receiver" position on the depth chart.

Syracuse Football 2016 Opponent Preview: NC State Wolfpack (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Is this team good? We've heard that several times in the last few years, at least.

As you already knew (since we're pretty far into these), we've been taking a look at all of theSyracuse Orange's opponents for this fall. The schedule is still as difficult as always. Just the same, we're choosing an optimistic outlook on each week, where possible. Today, we talk about the:

NC State Wolfpack
School
: North Carolina State University-Raleigh
Mascot: Wolfpack
#BRAND Slogan: "#STATEment"
Alternate #BRAND Slogan Suggestions: "Pack Street's Back ALRIGHT!" "Wolf of Y'all Street."
Recommended Blog: Backing the Pack
Conference: ACC
Coach: Dave Doeren, 4th year. When NC State moved on from Tom O'Brien. it was because they were looking to get out of a rut of six- and seven-win seasons. In the three years since Doeren took over, State's won three, eight and seven games, respectively. Doeren has appeared to elevate the level of recruiting a tick, and the athletic department has certainly gotten more aggressive marketing itself in-state as well, which helps. But you'd have to think the program's ceiling in third or fourth place in the division is not what State was envisioning when they made a coaching change.
2015 Record: (7-6) (3-5)
