Welcome to Hug Holiday Day!

Hug Holiday Day encourages us to give hugs to those who need them. On this day, people go out and give hugs at senior citizen centers, hospitals, and other places. The focus is upon elderly, sick and invalid, lonely people and anyone who needs the warmth, cheer, and love that a hug provides.

This very special day was created by the "Hugs for Health Foundation". According to the Foundation:

" Hug Holiday is founded on the premise that hugs, friendship and volunteer support are vital components to the overall senior care plan."

Celebrate Hug Holiday Day today by:

  • Giving hugs to those who need one
  • Joining Hugs for Heath
  • Making a donation to this or another group

Syracuse football among the 30 most experienced teams in the country, according to Phil Steele (PS; Carlson)

College football writer PhilSteele has been rolling out listings of the country's most experienced units over the past week, leading up to his annual experience chart, a pretty unique way of charting the most experienced teams in the country.

It combines returning starters, returning production and returning upperclassman, using a relatively complex point system to rank the teams. While a high ranking certainly doesn't guarantee success or failure, it's a pretty good way to identify which unheralded teams have a chance to make improvements.

Steele placed Syracuse No. 27 in the country in experience, a ranking based heavily on the offense returning 93.4 percent of its total yards from last season. That total ranked sixth in the country.

Syracuse's worst category came on the offensive line, where the Orange return only 34 starts, 110th in the country. Only two players who started the majority of last year, Omari Palmer and Jason Emerich, return.

Syracuse Football Recruiting: Momentum Builds for Orange Going into Dead Period (TNIAAM; Menefee & Cassillo)

The Orange added four recruits this past weekend, and seven in the past 10 days.

As you may have noticed, the Syracuse Orange are gaining momentum on the recruiting trail for 2017 -- a nice development heading into the dead period which began yesterday, June 27 and runs through Monday, July 10.

Over the weekend, the Orange got four verbal commitments, adding onto the three players that had already committed since June 18. In the month of June, SU secured seven verbal commitments to put the class at 10 total commits. Nine of those 10 are listed as three-star recruits on 247Sports. Quarterback Tommy DeVito now has four stars from ESPN -- a big jump for him from the start of the recruiting cycle, as Syracuse.com's Stephen Bailey pointed out yesterday. Most of these players have two or three stars on Scout and Rivals right now.

Best of all with most of these players though is that they're extremely fast, as 247's Steve Wiltfong has pointed out in two separate articles in the last week. At a very brief glance:

    • Wide receiver Cameron Jordan, a pickup this weekend, is listed with a 4.51 40-yard dash.
    • ATH Eric Coley, son of defensive line coach Vinson Reynolds and another weekend commit, runs a sub-4.6.
    • Running back Allen Stritzinger, who pledged on Sunday, clocked a 4.67 laser-timed 40 at The Opening Regional.
    • Florida wideout Josh Palmer also runs a 4.4-ish 40-yard dash, as we heard when he committed the other day.

Syracuse Football 2016 Opponent Preview: Florida State Seminoles (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Talkin' 'bout the 'Noles!

As you already knew (since we're pretty far into these), we've been taking a look at all of the Syracuse Orange's opponents for this fall. The schedule is still as difficult as always. Just the same, we're choosing an optimistic outlook on each week, where possible. Today, it's not all that possible, since we're discussing the::
Florida State Seminoles
School
: Florida State University
Mascot: Seminoles
#BRAND Slogan: "Raise the Torch"
Alternate #BRAND Slogan Suggestions: "Nole-in' in the Deep." "STATE CHAMPS."
Recommended Blog: Our best friends over at Tomahawk Nation
Conference: ACC
Coach: Jimbo Fisher, 7th year. Fisher is one of college football's best coaches. In six years at the helm at FSU, he's won at least 10 games five separate times, taken home three ACC titles and one national championship. The Seminoles are one of the nation's recruiting powers each and every year. Fisher's fought to get more money to retain his assistants (and succeeded), and under his leadership, anything short of national title contention is deemed to be falling short. Very few programs can make claims like that, which is a testament to both Fisher and his predecessor, Bobby Bowden.

Which Team of Syracuse Football Players Will Win "Lift For Life?" (TNIAAM; Keeley, Wall and Ross)

The Syracuse football team has been split into eight teams to compete in the Lift For Life. Which one will be victorious?

The Syracuse Chapter of Uplifting Athletes will hold its annual Lift For Life event on Wednesday, July 20th starting at 7:00 p.m. The event raises moneyin the effort to end rare diseases and is looking to raise at least $15,000.

The way it's set up, the Syracuse Orange football team has been split up into eight nine teams. Those teams will complete in a series of events in order to determine the winning team. You can also donate directly to any of the teams to show your support.

Teams will compete in a variety of events such as the tire flip race and the prowler push. The top four teams then advance to the semifinals where a plate hold will determine the two finalists. The finalists will then determine a winner with a good old fashioned tug-of-war.

Syacuse Football Opponents We've Played Way More Times Than You Think (TNIAAM; Keeley)

After looking at schools SU has never played, here's a list of schools we've played way more often than you might realize.

Yesterday we had some fun dissecting the major university opponents that theSyracuse Orange have somehow never faced on the gridiron. As for who we need to break the seal with, we came away somewhat divided but it seemed like Stanford was the option people most wanted to see (even if it would be a bloodbath right now).

Looking over the historical stats, there's a flip side to this discussion that we thought might be fun to note as well: The schools Syracuse Football has played way more often than you think.

There are quite a few schools out there SU has only ever played once (Georgia, Colorado, Kentucky, Purdue, TCU). And there's a ton of schools we've only played two or three times. These opponents stick out because you'd probably expect them to be in that group, and yet...

East Carolina Pirates (10 games, SU leads 7-3) - The Pirates were a pretty trendy non-conference opponent for Syracuse in the late 80s and 90s. We played then eight times between 1988 and 1997. And come to think of it, they'd probably be a decent pick to have on the non-con schedule these days as well, even with their reputation for upsetting good opponents.

Illinois Fighting Illini (12 games, Illinois leads 2-8) - We need to keep playing these guys if for no other reason than to make that series look a little better. We cannot let another orange & blue team own us like this. Most of the games between us took place in the 50s and 70s and we've only played twice in the last 30 years, splitting that series.

Get To Know Your Orange Man - No. 67 OT Michael Lasker (TNIAAM; Menefee)

Lasker's one of three offensive linemen with some starts under his belt.
Name: Michael Lasker
Position: Offensive Tackle
Year: (Redshirt) Senior
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 318
Hometown: Corona, Calif.
High School: Santiago/Riverside City College
2015 Stats: Lasker redshirted, after seeing action on the Syracuse Orange offensive line in both 2013 and 2014 (including his first start vs. Villanova in 2014).
2016 Projections: Lasker is currently ahead in the battle for the starting left tackle spot and thus listed as first-string.
How'd He Get Here: He was one of many JUCO transfers the Orange brought in for the 2013 season. Then-offensive coordinator George McDonald paid him a visit out in California and sold him on the move out east. He had an offer from SE Louisiana State, and was getting attention from USC and Arizona, but ultimately chose 'Cuse.
What'd Scout/Rivals Say: Unrated.

Get To Know Your Orange Man - No. 72, NT Steven Clark (TNIAAM; Orsenigo)

Let's get to know one of the members of Syracuse's least experienced unit, the defensive line.
Name: Steven Clark
Position: Nose Tackle
Year: Sophomore
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 311
Hometown: Arab, Ala.
High School: Brindlee Mountain
2015 Stats: As a true freshman, Clark saw action in all 12 games last season. He was one of 15 true freshman to play for the Orange. Overall, he made 21 tackles, including 1.5 for loss. Against Louisville, Clark recovered two fumbles, becoming the first SU defender to do so in the same game since Arthur Jones did it against USF in 2009.
2016 Projections: Clark is currently listed as the Syracuse Orange's backup to Kayton Samuels at the nose tackle position. There's so much uncertainty on the defensive line heading into the 2016 season, so at this point it's a real guessing game. Whether Clark is the backup or the starter, though, he'll see the field in every game again this season, though.

Update: See what happens when a 12-inch water main bursts in Syracuse (Video) (PS; Sturtz)

Ever wondered what what it looks when a large water main bursts? It's not exactly a gusher, but it is an unusual sight.

The City of Syracuse released video of crews working after a 12-inch water main feeding off Woodland Reservoir broke Tuesday morning. The break occurred along Bellevue Avenue and sent water flowing in all directions.

City officials initially warned that customers throughout the city may experience low water pressure Tuesday.

Crews were at the scene digging Tuesday evening and were able to isolate water outages to just the four blocks around the site. They were expected to have water service restored around midnight.

Your morning can only get better from here!

They were indefinitely suspended back in April.
We'll see how many, if any games they miss.
Alexander could red-shirt. Gaines already did so.
